Weapon speed and tanking

What’s better for tanking, a faster weapon speed or slower? I’ve seen some guides and discussions say both sides of the argument. I mean, I’ve seen Twitch videos of people two-handed weapon tanking and actually doing a good job, with a slow speed weapon. I thought it would be a faster weapon as it would generate a more steady amount of reliable rage🤷

It’s generally better to have a slow two-handed weapon because warriors have abilities with instant attacks like Mortal strike or Whirlwind. It’s only logical that the attack speed doesn’t matter if one uses instant attacks, what matters is the maximum damage of those instant attacks. If you play like this you basically generate threat by just dealing a ton of damage.
You could use heroic strikes ( this one is not instant, it’s on your autoattack swing) and shred armor because those abilities generate extra threat. Those abilities would work with fast weapons because you can burn endless amount of rage like this.
Tanking outside of raids and dungeons below level 60 is quite easy and can be done with all specs/weapons. I maintanked all dungeons as BM hunter with the pet for example.

Generally go for what has higher dps slower weapons tend to do better in dungeons where u dont have alot of rage so its better if u cleave/hs for more dmg.

Raid tanking you prefferably want to stay around 2 sec (again higher dps is generally better but if comparable dps and say 1.8 dagger vs a 2.3 sword go for the dagger)

Pre-60 dungeon tanking: Just use a slow 2hander and arms spec. Your main used abilities are going to be sweeping strikes, whirlwind, cleave and demo shout. Dungeons in general involve a lot more AOE tanking.

Raid tanking: Fast main hand to get more stable rage and more heroic strikes. Deep prot does more threat at low gear levels than fury prot, but you want to look into fury prot when you have 20% crit/6(9)% hit.

Don’t listen to the above mentioned advice.

Whilst leveling and doing dungeons threat is the most important, mitigation isn’t. You want. Fury/Prot spec so you can dual wield 2 fast weapons. Anywhere from 1.4sec to 2sec. Feel free to use daggers even.

Faster swings = faster rage = more threat

Anyone who advices you to go arms and a 2H doens’t know what they’re talking about. Try to get aggro on a mob with a 3sec swing whilst the hunter multishots a pack. Or the mage cast a 2.5sec frostbolt. And asking DPS to wait is a very hard to accomplish thing. If only DPS would wait ^^ our lives would be easier.

Seriously dual wield.
1.4sec to max 2sec speed weapons

PS: Heroic strikes you’ll rarely use in raid tanking. It’ll be Shield Slam or Bloodthirst and Revenge/Sunder Armor/Improved Shield Block only on heavy hitting fights such as Vael or Maexxna one would use Heroic Strike to dump the rage. And that’s as a Main Tank. As an Offtank you’ll be rage starving and will only be using Shield Slam/Bloodthirst on cooldown.

I’m not sure how you squeezed this much fail into 1 post.

You really don’t want to go fury/prot until you’re lvl60, mostly tanking raids, and have 6% hit and 20% crit. Tactical mastery is too good to give up while leveling, especially if you’re on a pvp server, and very nice to have when tanking dungeons. Dual-wielding 2 fast daggers will help with rage, but you lose it all if you have to stance swap.

P.S the reason why you’re raged starved when OTing is because you’re boomer tanking in deep prot with mitigation gear when you should be in threat gear and fury/prot. Hell man, do you ask DPS to wait for 5 sunders in raids too?

in dungeons slow 2 hander and arms build

in raids it depends what race you are and what weapon sare availbale for you.

You just take tactical masters and imp charge from arms tree, than go fury untill flurry and bloodthirst. 2x 1handers will give more rage than a 2H. So you can and dualwield double dagger and stance dance to either ww/clap/intercept.

Probably check warcraftlogs before you make invalid assumptions.

Also the main reason why you’d want a fast weapon speed at leveling is to keep up with DD tps. For sure during levelling. Since in raids it’s normal to lip/hold back so tank grabs aggro. Unless you are in a hardcore speed runners guild. But the majority of players do not play at that level.

PS: calling someone a boomer is quite mature. Assuming I wasn’t including tactical mastery is quite the challenge. Not doublechecking warcraftlogs and assuming I’m deep prot in mit gear is just as horrid as your advice. But hey, who am I?

It depends.

Fast 1h is good until lvl 34, to reduce the RNG.

Slow 2h after lvl 34 in dungeons is great because you can aggro a whole pack with a huge Whirlwind; even better if you’re arms for Sweeping Strikes.

Fast 1h is good for singletarget tanking in raids, where you have almost infinite rage and can spam Heroic Strike.

I think whatever you go 2h or dual or 1h+shield you’ll have no trouble tanking dungeons.

You’ll still have enought rage for threat holding anyway. If you are thinking about taking the threat from AoE dps that’s most of the time impossible and not a big issue anyway.

Now depending on the spec you’ll do more or less damage and put or take away the pressure from the healer.
You can always macro 1h+shield to change it in combat if there will be a problem with the mitigation.

Also it comes down to preferences. So it comes down to what works better for you.
Don’t stress about it. Use what you like. Doesn’t have to be the best because it will do the job too.
And overtime you’ll answer the question yourself.

You did say “fury/prot” which does tend to mean that you put points in prot, fury/prot without points in prot is a bit of a misnomer isn’t it? It’s still a bit iffy at lvl51 (the required to get tactical mastery + imp. charge and Flurry) 52 if you want blood thirst as well. The whole reason why fury/prot is better than deep prot for threat is because of flurry, and at lvl52 you’re going to be very short on crit and extremely short on hit which means low flurry uptime, even with fast weapons.

Add to it that in dungeons your biggest issue is going to be multi-mob tanking not single target, arms is much stronger on multiple targets due to sweeping strikes, plus whirlwind and cleave scaling with weapon damage. Fast daggers have low weapon damage ranges, which means less damage for WW/Cleave, which are your two main threat abilities for multiple mobs.

This also comes into leveling, where arms is the preferred spec up until 60 for a number of reasons. By going your spec, the player gimps himself for leveling compared to full arms, and needs to get a hold of 2 good weapons instead of 1 good weapon.

I checked warcraftlogs, this is you right? https:// classic.warcraftlogs. com/reports/Bb8njLcwHGYmaTCk #fight=2&type=summary&source=11

Glad to see that you updated to fury/prot after parsing poorly for weeks as deep prot, you did much better as fury/prot but you seriously have to start using heroic strike more though.

i‘m 2h tanking as arms in dungeons just perfectly fine. i can hold aggro with aoe mages in the team, what else do you need?
ofc raid is an entirely different story, but 2h dungeon tanking works
