Just bring a shadow priest tank.
I’ve tanked 4 Strat UD runs.
8 Scholomance runs.
1 Strat Live run.
It’s hilarious and stupid.
But yes, ofc ‘actual tanks’ are way better and don’t need a mana break between each pull.
But not EVERYTHING in the game has to be about min-maxxing. Sometimes doing dumb things because they’re dumb can be kinda fun.
The advantage is that on melee only bosses he won’t die/take damage (unless non-tank magic mechanic hits him). So it has it strengths and weaknesses. And the goal of a rogue avoidance tank is to optimize threat/damage so it’s a fun thing to pursue while the game becomes stagnant raidlogging.
The balance tanking I don’t see working in any environment in which there is actual damage going around.
The rogue tank can work if these conditions happen:
No regular spell damage that would 1 shot the rogue.
Not too much aoe damage so the healers will not OOM before the boss dies.
No threat loss mechanic on the rogue.
No enrage or an enrage that is generous enough to the reduced damage output would allow a kill or an enrage that will not wipe that raid.
A group that knows what they are doing and being as gentle with threat as you would be with a newborn.
No tankswap or tankswap that can be cheesed by avoiding it.
The runs I’ve tanked I’ve had ALL the -threat reduction talents and no silence or imp. inner fire as I’m raiding as Shadow too and am too cheap to respec.
However as most of the people still running those dungeons are not wearing AQ/Naxx level gear holding threat against them is still not a problem due to MINDBLAST GO BOOM-threat modifier. The dmg might not be there but the threat multiplier is.
However for a ‘meme Spriest tank’ spec I’d go something like this.
Not sure it’s the best but it sure beats having 47% threat reduction.
Also instead of my ‘subtlety’ on cloak I’d go +70 armor.
Nah, the other DPS in all the runs I’ve done were fine with it. Mindblast=crazy threat. They were not holding back.
Then again I am AQ/Naxx geared and most of them were blues/MC geared.
Of course with a full T3 rogue and Kingsfall it’d be different as 1 ambush and he’d probably pull aggro when I am in my ‘raid’ spec with threat reduction talents.
Dual Wield Devastate Prot Warrior (already mentioned) - You effectively spam devastate, whirlwind on cooldown and heroic strike non stop. Due to Prot talents everything is cheap on rage and due to DPS gear you have a lot of rage. It’s no Fury Warrior but it does actually put out reasonable damage.
Dual Wield Arms Warrior - Apply Mortal Strike and Blood Frenzy while dual wielding. It does less dps than 2handed Arms and a lot less than DW Fury but if you say wanted to bring the BF debuff to help your hunters get nice logs and you lacked a good 2hander, this can be a short-term solution.
2handed Fury Warrior - It plays pretty much exactly the same as 33/28 Arms hybrid (aka standard Arms build) but doesn’t bring Blood Frenzy. It may do slightly more dps than 2h Arms but completely pointless as it does less dps than DW Fury while also not bringing Blood Frenzy.
We had a Rogue tank Gruul successfully back in TBC. Do understand though that this requires your entire guild to make an effort just for the meme of having a Rogue avoidance tank it. It’s not a real thing that you can do outside of having a guild willing to humour you and allow this to happen.
This is just silly, there is no gameplay difference between “full arcane mage” and a proper 40/0/21 arcane frost spec. I mean I guess you would drop blast debuff with missiles instead of frostbolt and get some pvp survivability, so i suppose you could do it in bg’s (not arena), but you will be one kick / cs from uselessness.
It is doubly silly since it is very likely that all/most raiding mages will actually play a proper 40/0/21 arcane spec come Phase 2 of TBC, because our doubtlessly improved kill speeds will counteract the spec’s only weakness - sustain. Expect A LOT of mages in BT/Hyjal do somehing like 8AB/FrB rotation with double icy veins.
Maybe something like 40/18/3 will be a thing in Hyjal for Ignite Flamestrike aoe or somethig but I very much doubt it. Nobody will ever be “full arcane” in PvE, and like one silly person will do it in PVP spamming slow and uninterruptable missiles praying for no lockout.
Others demolished your other suggestions so I won’t go there. The only one remotely viable is rogue tank on gruul, and even then strictly for memes.
