I recently returned back to WoW after a break of around 4 years, and heard amazing compliments for Dragonriding, hearing that it made flying a lot better. So part of my return was discovering what was so exciting about Dragonriding.
So I hop on my Dragonriding mount, and go from Valdrakken capital city, to Tyr Hold. Half way through my journey, I come to an impasse - my vigor runs out. Hmm, that’s no good. I can’t get there. I have to stop on the ground half way through because my dragonriding mount will not fly up to Tyr hold unless I stop on the ground and start running for a while to regenerate Vigor.
I found, that when I am traversing to another area that is the same vertical height or lower, then Dragonriding is amazing.
But, when I have to traverse to an area with a greater height, like Tyr Hold from Valdrakken capital city, then it… doesn’t work. I have to stop half way, and even after regenerating all my Vigor, I still struggle to climb up to Tyr Hold. The only way I’ve managed to get to Tyr hold is through Steady Riding instead.
Am I doing something seriously wrong? Whenever I need to fly to another area with much greater verticality and height compared to where I am at, I seem to very easily and quickly run out of Vigor and find switching to steady flying much easier.
Either I am doing something really wrong when traversing through these areas, or Dragonriding is seriously flawed when traversing vertical heights, is not as glorious as the recommendations are suggesting.
Yes. Collect all glyphs, try to always angle down a little even after going up with “space” before going up again to keep your vigor generation running; I usually never run out of vigor… unless maybe when going from the lowest point on the map directly to the highest, and that’s nothing you usually have to do.
I haven’t collected a single glyph, so that must be why.
But, in the new expansion TWW, will we be given the glyphs at the start? Or will the glyphs not be given to us? I am wondering whether it’s a waste of time to get them since we are so near to the next one. Not sure if glyphs will be given to us over time or not.
No idea about how glyphs are handled in TWW; haven’t played the beta… although, wait, think I read something about some being there, but not giving anything but zone achievements for ppl who already have all glyphs, so maybe there are “replacement glyphs” so ppl without them don’t have to go back to DF - but honestly, you still have more than a week of DF, so I’d focus on getting the DF glyphs, dragon- err… skyriding becomes so much more enjoyable with all glyphs and abilities unlocked.
Well for short distances and continuous mounting and dismounting, I find steady flight to be more reliable. Otherwise, make sure you have all upgrades unlocked, that way it will be easier to fly around without having to stop (I barely have to, unless I’m trying to farm mining nodes for instance, in that case it is indeed easy to run out of vigor - hence why steady flight is more or less better in this case imho).
Practice a bit, it needs to get used to, after a while you will get the hang about how often to spam your abilities to maximise speed and not to burn through vigor too fast. Just a tip: when you want to go up, do actually look up with you camera as well when you press spacebar or the related skill. It works better (and if you look down halfway through the animation you get a huge speed boost for some reason).
Once you have the glyphs and learn the talents, I find it’s almost self-sustaining, e.g. to go up, I find that if you angle down to pick up speed and start vigor recharging, then hit space bar to climb, the process gives you a vigor back, and if you keep repeating you can gain a lot of height. You should easily get from the auction house area to Tyr’s Hold.
Some are gonna hate this but - get Dragon Rider addon with speed meter practice with it for a while and you will get a good idea on how to keep speed up. If you got no glyphs get there with Dragon Flight then switch mode, it will make it easier to collect most.
Actually if you maneuver properly you can have infinite vigor, doesn’t matter if you go up or down, as long as you don’t actually stop on the ground, you can infinitely go up and forward at max speed.
The trick is to use the space button (to make you fly upwards) when you have some momentum. So from the ground you press space, then rush forward, then space again and aim above, when it’s about to lose momentum from the ability then you aim down a bit, wait a bit for vigor recharge and space and aim above again, rinse and repeat for infinite vigor.
Thanks everyone - I’ll collect some glyphs and see if it makes a difference.
Edit:
As an update, I was collecting glyphs and it didn’t seem they did anything anymore. My talent tree was already maxed out.
I tried Marc’s suggestions, and that worked. It seems when I use an ability, like Skyward Ascent or Whirling Surge, if I aim upwards when I use the ability while the animation is playing, then it seems to be a lot smoother.
Sad I didn’t get to you in time - glyphs do nothing now. It is mostly level based if this is your first time doing it. By 70 your character, and all other characters going forward regardless of level, will have all the things unlocked and it will be much easier.
However, it is still very possible to get “dead air” and there is a lot of angling involved. I just switch to static flying to climb a mountain, it’s much easier and also faster now. To get to Tyrhold without having quite as much of an issue with dragonriding, go from where the Aspects sit at the top of Valdrakken.
I’d even go as far as to say you can easily go from below the AH area to the top of the highest mountain around without running out of vigor. Takes some practice though.
In the end it is all practice, practice and more practice as well as trying out things a bit here and there. What will be hard in the begining are things like flying into the zaralec caves without kissing the walls or flying out of there without running out of vigor, but with some practice those are also no real problems.
No talents and points which you used to get when collecting Glyphs is gone. You can collect them all to get the respective achievement for each zone if you’re into that but they do not reward anything.
World of Warcraft is removing Dragonriding Glyphs and Talents from the game in The War Within , instead giving players all of their abilities for free. Rather than needing to collect Glyphs from across the Dragon Isles, World of Warcraft players will get all the traits and skills natively as soon as they unlock Dynamic Flying.

Also in TWW, Dragon Glyphs will be named Skyriding Glyphs instead as stated below:
The Dragon Glyphs we got used to seeing and chasing in Dragonflight are returning in The War Within in the form of Skyriding Glyphs, and we bring you all the currently known details about the system! Learn about the Skyriding Glyphs in The War Within and why (or even if) you should go after them or not.
I never really use Whirling Surge, it feels like a rather treacherous friend. The skill is very expensive and the speed increase fades quickly, leaving you starved for Vigor.
What you can do is aim slightly upwards, activate Skyward Ascent and then immediately pull your aim down to where you want to fly. Skyward Ascent will bring you up to max speed (around 1300%) for a short burst and will then level off towards 900 - 950%, which is still within Vigor regeneration speeds. This requires a bit of a feeling for your speed (or a Weakaura), but only accelerate again when you dip below Vigor regeneration speed. That way you can travel almost at Whirling Surge speed but can remain Vigor neutral while flying.
I returned to WoW a month ago and had troubles with getting to high places initially. The most important thing while skyriding is keeping high speed so vigor regenerates rapidly. It took some practise, but now I use skyriding everywhere and have abundance of vigor at all time without any skyriding talents
Get the Dragon Rider addon or a Weak Aura that’ll show you your speed and, more importantly, the gauge where your speed needs to be to generate vigor without ‘stalling’ and it stops generating.
