The Best Three:

Humans, but not Kirin Tor - Stormwind mages are deeply underrated. Follow the traditions of the wizards of the Kingdom of Stormwind on the eve of the First War and get assassinated by demons!

Blood Elves, but very much straddling the line between Arcane and Fel. They’re not above dabbling into the extreme sort of magics for their own personal gain and to ensure the safety of Silvermoon. It should at times feel like they’re just an inch away from making some bad mistakes.

High Elves? Really? Yes! I love them when they’re basically the lonely remnants of those who can’t ally themselves with the Horde, either grizzled veterans from Honor Hold or outcasts with strong connections to humanity and the Alliance. Maybe your High Elf mage has a human wife and some half-elf children, and he doesn’t want to abandon his family… so he puts his magical ability towards keeping his loved ones safe!

Any High Elf concept that stays clear of pointy eared human has my seal of approval.

I personally also like the route of the High Elf mage who sees potential in human mages but thinks their race need more guidance and begrudgingly becomes a mentor figure.

I’m a big fan of that as well - one of my favourite RP moments is when an Elf realises just how powerful humans can get within a very short space of time. Humans being speedy-learning jack-of-all-trades is great.

Night elf mage female (Highborne)
High elf (OOC void elf)
Blood elf
Nightborne
Undead (weird nobody mentioned these)
i would say Gnomes but they have limited good transmog

i find human mages boring and overated but thats just me.

Pandaren or Zandalari. Absolute independence from Kirin Tor, quite available racial mogs, specific traditions with Pandaren often using body movement instead of verbal incantations and the Zandalari dealing with the loa as usual, and down go all those mana-addicted elves.

As of Dragonflight, the correct answer will be Tauren.

For the moment though it’s humans or Nightborne.

When I’m not making incredible temperature based puns (my genius is unrecognised) I do think orc mages using old Gorian Empire techniques are pretty neat

especially if they also dress in togas
