What puts you off tanking?

So there seems to be a tank shortage in game, specifically in 5 man content. I do sometimes alt a tank but am put off playing the role in M+. In my case, it’s the responsibility for routing and percentage that actually puts me off, I simply don’t want to have to plan routes outside of my time in game.

I’m curious to see what puts other people off?

Pugs do. I’ll happily tank for friends, never for pugs. The amount of hate thrown the tank’s way if they pull based on their defensives rather than the trigger happy DPS’s CDs is mind boggling.

tanking is the most enjoyable role when u got the tier and 2nd leggy. DD is way more stressful if you need to do banger dps + kicks + stuns

Yeah I can appreciate that, a lot of the people who I played with in the past quit during this expansion but I was more willing to play the role in a friends group myself. Now I pug more and it feels like there is more on the tank in a pug.

What I want from the dungs are still there when they becomes legacy content, and then doing them solo is a far superior experience because they can be enjoyed rather than to be hurried through.

As others pointed out, Tanks scarcity happens in pugs, much less in guilds or protected environment where you can communicate.

Non communication puts a lot of extra burden on tanks.

There is generally more damage, kick and ccs are less organized and so the raw damage on the tank is higher in a pug, ending up in some pulls being way more scary than they really are.

Pathing is completely on tanks in a pug. In voice you can guide your tank, even with no clue on pulls cause you can communicate, in a pug if the tank doesn’t know what to do the time loss is atrocious.

Even simple.things as tracking CDs can be avoided thanks to talking.

I like tanking less in pug
but i when i pug i’m ready to do everything from CCs to interupting everything
and i’m enjyoing it because its stimulate my brain it’s the RUSH of adrenaline if i can controll every mob in pack by myself

My big advantage is that i’m immune to stress in hectic situations
my palms are not sweaty when something goest wrong

Generally the salt that seems to rear it’s ugly head when the tank makes a mistake

I dont mind tanking, the routes and % comes naturally when you’ve done it a while. I dont think about % or pulls anymore it’s been pretty much the same route last 18 months.

Tankings a nightmate 0-14 keys, gets much easier 15+ with a group of KSM folk. Still prefer keys on my hunter though, it’s just so easy and stress free.

Responsibility. I don’t want it.

But it also has to do with me just wanting to play hunter in WoW. If we had a pet tank spec, I might actually try it. But as it stands now, none of the tank-able classes appeal to me in the slightest.

Literally the same reason i don’t like tanking.

But honestly i am a hypocrite in a sense that i don’t wanna tank myself but complain there are no tanks.

I hated routing since the start and think its weird that dungeons are intentionally designed over them not being completable unless you know exactly what trash can be skipped, that said even if I think the design in itself is weird it’s not a gamebreaker.

For me the reason I stopped tanking all together (even for friends) was a combination of all of the following

  • lowered droprate on gear + many unfruitful runs, there’s too many runs needed to get a tiny upgrade
  • the leveling of renown
  • the leveling of conduits
  • the existance of the vault which is only slightly less useless then the weekly chest
  • the absence of a valor vendor as a deterministic solution to the constant failing of the weekly vault

The combination of these things often made me feel like Blizzard was trying to run me through a hamsterwheel so that they could present it to their investors as engagement so they could keep pretending the game isn’t on fire

before that I had stopped pugging simply because of how pugs work but I was still happily tanking for friends

I’ve never actually done it properly apart from off-tanking ZG back in the day. Seems to be a bit too much responsibility. And seeing how ungrateful people are towards their tanks and healers, the most important part of the team, I’m not terribly tempted.

Tanks are generally not good in pvp so I’d rather not have specific spec and gear just for m+. Also tanks are kinda the group leaders and need to know the route and strats and I would rather just turn my brain off and follow.

Tanking is for hardcore players, it requires a huge investment which is something casual players can’t afford.

That’s why there is a shortage.

^ This. Also the DPS that pull… it’s annoying.

People!

It’s not a role I enjoy either, nor healing. I don’t play this game to suffer, I play the game for fun.

As a main tank the only thing putting me off is having to carry dps, healing & tanking all at once, so i go healer to chill for a run or two

or playing my hunter who will have a little bit of … difficulty tanking

Having to know the route, Having to know the position.

BFA M+ Tanking was fun due to the beam doing MASSIVE damage.

I also only did Underrot to try and farm the mount so i learned the stuff there while i went.

I’m fine tanking below 10, But at 10+ it feels like “Knowing” stuff is more important.
