I’ve just joined the game after many many years away and decided to create a new character. I’ve been put in the new players server ‘Turalyon’ which seems to be deserted.
Is there a server worth joining that is more social and group friendly? Or is this the norm in most servers?

I am having a good time on Ashbringer. It haves Queues in the evening when everyone comes off work but not that bad. Pretty fun realm thus far. If you decide to play there, add me 
no idea what its like on other servers but noggenfogger is pretty active. have only met nice people there thus far. so i guess i am a little bias. 
I’ve never even heard of the Turalyon server. If it is listed as New Players then yeah it’ll be empty.
There are 5 server population categories:
New players means the realm is pretty empty - it has nothing to do with how experienced you are it’s just a label for population lower than Low.
Full means you will have to queue to get in. Anything Medium or High will be a busy server.

I’ll certainly look into it! I suppose my next question would be… Could i move the character over into that server? Or will it be a case of starting again?

You would need to start again on a new server btw unless you wish to pay 20 euro for character transfer (not worth it for a low level)
Unless you intended to play Classic WoW. in which case when you go on your Battlenet launcher to launch the game, you need to select Classic rather than World of Warcraft.
Especially not worth it in retail since lvling is so fast.
Ashbringer is pretty good, just make sure you are a tank/priest or a mage or you will get kicked from every SM group
Welcome back my friend! In regards to server, I’d look at the more popular servers, even a medium server has a very healthy player base.
Zandalar has been nothing but bliss since the start IMO
Tried dragonfang but it seems dead on arrival tbh
Firemaw is the most populated one. Propel were talking about a spanish invasion. All i’ve seen is english and Scandinavian languages (mostly danish). Queues are still high but not as crazy as launch week

the whole “LF Mage only aoe farming SM” is getting out of hand
