What's the point of the Rend skill?

Recently I was questing with a buddy and we were discussing warriors, and specifically the skill “Rend”; then we encountered a veteran warrior in Desolace, and I asked him about it. In his opinion it is indeed quite weak and is not used in raids and late game content.
However it seems to me like a waste of a skill either way.

It has its uses at the early levels until more skills are learnt. Noone uses it in the end game because it doesn’t scale with gear and so is the total waste of 10 rage. Imp. Rend is the transit talent however required for the impale.

Its nice to prevent enemy from stealthing, thats about it I guess.

Well it’s nice to have a DOT ticking away while growing a beard at the same time as next 2h swing is charging up. Besides, make those talent points work for you if you’re arms and spec into the deep wounds talent.

Rend is at least useful on low lvls and against stealth.

Now if you think Rake, that is quite completely useless.

Mostly a PvP talent later on. Used to prevent enemies from bandaging or stealthing.

Rend was only good when blizzard forgot to put a lvlreq on a grey sword, dropping from a giant elite underneath Naxx in TBC.

It made your rend 2shot any1 under lvl 30 in pvp.

Good times i made a warrior just because of that sword back then…

it keeps stealthies in combat and not in stealth say vanish etc

It does bad dps but is very good for stopping re stealthing in pvp

I find it nice to do at least some damage between all the Miss, Miss, Parry, Miss, Miss. Bastards don’t even Dodge so I can Overpower them (and miss).

You dont use it in raid as it takes (limited) debuff slot. Its usefull in PvP.

You don’t use it while raiding. It it’s good for pvp. And it’s your best skill for leveling. Heroic strike is trash as it replaces your next auto attack so it can’t generate rage. Just go 3/3 improved rend and use if the mob you fight live longer than 9 seconds. Which most mobs do when you level. Pool some rage and just keep rend up then execute. Best way of leveling a warrior.
