1: Mount need to be as silence as they can be, i dont need to hear some flames burning 24/7.
2: Mount need to be kinda small, as OP is saying, no need for big flashy stuff, its anyoing when flying.
3: Need to be a flying mount, ground mount are okay when lvling at lvl 20 to 58, from there on out, flying is the go to.
4: Need to fit the race / class (spec) fantazy (and faction / transmorg).
5: Personally thing i just figure out, having 50 toon on my account, none of them are using the same mount as far as i know, each toon have thier own mount it seems.

Sandstone drake is a perfect match for me, although I find it to be a very ugly looking drake. The other sexier alternative would be Heart of the Nightwing but it's not so easy to get.
Why is it perfect? Not an actual mount, you get to transform into the mount. It just adds something to your character :) and of course the possibility to carry someone around on your back is not only great, it's a must have.

All of my different toons have their own designated mounts though.
The leading deciding factor is indeed, must do both and be as compact as possible.
The exception to the size thing would be my druid who uses flight form when alone or becomes a Sandstone Drake if he would "use" a mount. That's just because I think its nice to 'rp-think' he can also turn into a dragon ;)

For me it depends on the transmog. For the one I have right now I like the Vicious White Bonesteed from BFA S4. Or the Fallen Charger mount

My other half however can answer this easy:
Yak
He uses the brown yak everywhere, and on every toon.
He even uses it sometimes in places where itâs not optimal to use a ground mount⊠and sometimes fall to his death cause he forgets his yak canât fly. 
Invincible, the blue disc from Tazavesh and Sylvanas mount.
Game still lacks Dwarven tank mount its the one thing i would like as a mount.
Thatâs some amazing feat of necromancy youâve performed here today.

Indeed, I like a simple mount. For years i would use the Quelâdori steed as my go to Alliance mount. From Legion I use the green and blue unicorns.

I kinda like the red cloud mount and the ironbound protodrake. Both are commonish, nothing fancy.
Mount of the month for me is the spectral horse and wolf. I like my corrupted Felwing a lot to. In DF I use the Emerald dragon.
My favorites are Steamscale Incinerator, the store mecha mount and Grand Armored Gryphon from pandaria.

My chars each have their own although most tend to stick to their class mount - ie Nilari has the Huntsmasters wolfhawk.
