Cataclysm Classic is the least played from all Classics ( except ERA ).
MoP Classic not a thing until next year.
So play Classic…Classic.

Right now I’d recommend Classic Anniversary.
Which is basically a realm type within Classic.
The community is starting, you’d relive probably all of it until BC-WLK, possibly Cata but I guess it flopped (in my case due to class redesign, I prefer previous ones, depends on spec which exact one). So right now you could do group content a lot. Just power through the first 15 or so levels.
Era allows you to stay there but little point right now. Cata if you enjoy that and want to play MoP.
Unironically the healthy way of playing Classic is to approach it like seasons, pick 1-3 classes (specs) and just focus on those. I wanted to play a bit of many things and ended up perpetually behind.

Everybody here will say anniversary like everybody will tell you to buy TSLA in the stock market.
This is not the play.
Anniversary is a 12 month timegated speedrun to Kel Thuzad that will leave behind anybody who, for whatever reason, needs to be a month away, God forbid 2-3 from the game.
Classic Era instead has zero patches, zero updates coming, and while the crowd here tells you it is dead, it does actually have the size of the biggest Classic server in 2019 - Go check for yourself / visit a big city. In Era you can basically play at your own tempo, zero stress, do whatever you want.
Anniversary chars will also probably end up having the possibility to be transfered to Era, so the end destination may as well be the same. But beware - Anniversary is 12 months for content that should be, at least, 24 months. It is gonna be ultra fast paced.
Your choice. I am sure you will have fun with whatever you end up picking.

ERA has been long ruined by gdkp and everyone being full naxx bis.
GDKP is a major issue, I agree with you on that one.
But a 12 month rat race is a major issue too - You will see once BWL hits. Just watch.
No changes Era servers with no GDKP/Boosting would be the absolute dream. It is a vetoed dream it seems, unfortunately.

Well, that is another, long debate we could have.
I do like the game mostly for PvP, but I do not think this is the sentiment of the majority.
See the AV meta in Classic this days. People rank up to 14 and stop playing once they get the gear.
I think Gear-chasing is paramount to most. Hence once BWL hits, there will be a % of the population in a 12 month speedrun who will not be able to clear the raid in time, because they don’t have the time to do so. This has happened over and over again since the original Vanilla release. Hence why population drops and definitely stalls once AQ hits.
But still, I hope more were of your and my opinion. That would mean no chronoboons and more open world shenanigans.
Nah - its not fast paced really - it doesn’t take more than a month casually to level 60 if you just farm instead of running hither and thither - and yes - the end point may well be transfer to a classic era realm - but more likely just a unified classic realm
