Since it seems these nerfs tend to hit rather hard and almost ruin entire classes, I am absolutely certain paladin will hit the ground soon. So, I am wondering, which class has been the most stable throughout the years? Which class will almost always have a decent spec?
Warlock, mage, rogue and hunter are generally a safe bet because they all have 3 dps specs and one of those 3 specs is usually in a good spot.
I don’t find rogue that good right now, I liked it before, but now it feels kind of squishy and does not seem to do a lot of damage for me. I will try the other classes though
If you don’t mind playing something you don’t enjoy, you should go with:
-mage
-hunter
-wl
-rogue
as above said they have 3 specs.
Whether you like the FOTM spec and especially the build that it required for top performance is another story. Often the exact build that is top is ruining the fun of the spec and adds to many procs or things to track etc.

Just play what you want. Great players can make bad speccs work while also enjoying the journey because your not a metaslave.
If you suck a duck with a class, chances are just cuz you’re rerolling that you will continue to experience your suckyness either way.
Primarily the 3 pure DPS classes: warlock, mage, rogue.
It is extremely rare when one of their specs do not perform really well in a tier. I think statistically warlocks are the most stable out of all three.
Perhaps warrior can fit the bill as well, as one out of the two specs is more often than not middle of the pack atleast.
I would recommend warlock if you do not mind additional busywork during raids (gateway setup, soulstone and Cres in emergencies, healthstones). Their utility is unique and remain undistributes unlike other utilities like BL and Cres.
If the OP wants to play a DPS class that’s useful in M+, then it’s also worth pointing out class buffs, like Bloodlust, Battle Rez, etc.
- Shamans have Bloodlust and Windfury for melees. Lots of CC. Also some off-heals.
- Warlocks have cookies. Their Gateway will also allow for some nice skips in places like Freehold.
- Rogues: Shroud and Sap. Not sure how useful this will be in season 2. But they have good damage and CC.
- Druids: Battle Rez, Mark of the Wild.
- Ret Palas: Battle Rez, Auras, Blessings, strong off-heals.
- Dragons: Bloodlust and lots of CC.
- Hunters: Unfortunately, nothing really useful, other than good damage.
- Mages have buff food, which healers might like, if they’re too lazy to buy some at the inn, Bloodlust, and Arcane Intellect.
Play what you want, stick to it for the season, get good at it. Then it’s mainly your skill and gear that will matter most, not the class you picked.
To play it safe (Or as safe as possible, anyway): Warlock, mage, rogue.
Three DPS specs, even Blizz never (Well, hardly ever) mess up so badly that all three DPS-specs for a single class are intolerably bad.
Fixed is slightly up for you.
Hunter Bloodlust is clunky for MM though, so I always assume they won’t be happy if they need to do it. Would be nice if Blizz would make it a class rather than a pet ability.
Havoc DH and WW monks are solid. Forgot about them. Same with Warriors. Didn’t mean no disrespect.
The main point is: all DPS specs have a lot to offer, if played well. Only ones I personally avoid when picking groups are hunters.
I would say Rogue. They seem to be always meta.
Why not the hunters? Genuine question
The class which will always have a good DPS is the class you will master playing at.
Don’t worry, I forgot about warriors also.
Every class has its uses… depends on the comp!
Basically rhe only way to weigh it up is on chances.
The more dps speccs avaliable the more likely something will be decent, mage warlock rogue and hunter are generally considered safe as they offer 3 dps roles.
But this isnt always a fix if u main a specific specc ofcourse.
But that doesnt garuntee meta, as a example hunter and mages arent currently meta, but they also are considered completely terrible either
Are hunters a joke to you?!
Because I’ll have to spend time checking if they are MM, which makes it hard for them to use Bloodlust.
And in higher M+ keys, they always keep dying, apparently because they have weak defensive abilities. When my resto druid takes 50% damage from some nasty boss or trash ability, the hunters just get 1 shot. Maybe the hunter PuGs I played with are bad, but I heard other players report similar issues with hunters.
Historically, classes that always seem to be top dps are:
Warlock - Don’t know the exact details but I would bet £5K that Warlock has the most patches as #1 DPS in the game
Rogue - Usually a safe bet, currently best in M+
Demon Hunter - Their kit is basically designed for M+ so usually a safe bet, not sure about raiding
Paladin - They just got rework but historically Rets are very bad, it depends whether Blizzard wants to listen to PvPers and throw down the nerf hammer hard, I wouldn’t bet on Ret staying strong
Hunter - Too squishy, they need a rework or buff to their defensives
Mage - Usually a safe bet but not as good as Warlocks
Spriest - Either god or useless, not a safe bet
Shaman - Enhance is currently S tier but again, this rarely happens so I don’t think it’s a safe bet
Druid - I find this class cries more than any one but either Feral or Boomkin is always in an A or even S tier spot, Boomkin is currently the best caster DPS in M+ IMO
DK - Not a safe bet, devs hate DKs being in a good spot, they get nerfed more than any other class, Frost is always garbage for some reason, maybe needs a rework, Unholy is clunky as hell
Monk - WW is usually good, A tier, it’s not a safe bet though because if it’s gets nerfed you’re stuck healing or tanking
Warrior - There’s too many warriors playing this game, save yourself the headache of waiting for invites and just roll something else
Evoker - Already getting a rework next patch. Very squishy
