Spy Addon is simply a cheat (exploit), as it breaks gaming experience for rogues and druids. Many times when I do world pvp as I druid I rely on stealth. If a member of a opposite faction is being alerted that I have stealthed (and normally he couldn’t see me doing it as I did it for example on the opposite side of wall) and afterwards he is able to autotarget me then he is cheating, as normally without this addon he wouldn’t be able to do that.
LOS and stealth are a part of world PVP and the point of those mechanics is so that enemy players do not know where you are, so an addon that gives away your location and ignores those mechanics is game breaking and it’s a cheat.
Still many people are using it, probably because they wouldn’t be able to handle world pvp with druids or rogues without this cheat tool.
If it was a cheat then Blizzard would ban it. I don’t use it.
Since almost everyone uses the add on (which according to Blizz isn’t a cheat), if you don’t you’re at a disadvantage.
Also stealthy tears are the most tasty, I never have enough of em.

Spy is fine, get good
There are hundreds of topics about spy, go read them before creating a new one. Especially since it seems you don’t know how spy works.
First: it was already nerfed by blizzard, reducing it’s range fromm 200 to 50yards.
Spy will beep and show your name if you do an action within 50yards of the spy user.
He won’t be able to click you if you are in stealth.
He won’t know where you are.
True, it does break los, but that mostly affects NON-stealth classes.
And yeah, the spy user will be “alert” and won’t pull too many mobs or stay low on health. That is the only disadvantage for stealth classes and I won’t feel sorry that you have more difficulty OS low health players.
Fyi, you can 100% counter spy by going invis >50yards away from the opponent.
I’ve argued against this gamechanging addon problem in many threads over a year ago.
At some point Blizzard said they would guard against non-Vanilla development of addons and even adjusted the addon feature to ensure this.
I don’t remember something like this addon existing in Vanilla but apparently its okay to them.
Classic isn’t Vanilla and considering things like this addon and the mega server (pirate server) debacle it seems to me Blizzard has decided that staying true to the original wasn’t worth it after all and chose the route of the pirate servers.

What’s this got to do with private servers?
Spy was never used on private servers, it’s new for classic (I think). I don’t know why blizz has not broken it when it goes so clearly against the spirit of the game.

Well, either they decided to go with pandering to pirate server ways (as in allowing un-Vanilla development of addons) OR they are working on it and it takes long because its difficult to rip out something that is just publishing log data that is already there. Your guess is as good as mine. 
Why are so many people using it?
Well take the average player and ask “do you want a competative advantage?”, they will probably say yes, particularly when they know others have already and they will be at a disadvantage by not having it.
Your best workaround would be to get more than 50 yards away from the person you plan to attack before going into stealth, then the person wont be warned.
In a sense. ThreatMeters, Weakauras, even ClassicAuraDuration and Auctionator give sizeable gameplay advantage. Nothing so special about Spy, not sure why it gets all the hate.
I spent 3 years on private servers and never heard of the addon. Admittedly i did not play in past 2 years since Classic was announced. Did it get made since then?
I feel like you have an issue with pRIVate servers…
The addon existes before classic and was used in many places.
Level 10 trolls are a much bigger problem…
Cheating means doing something that breaks some rules.
Spy is not cheating.

It is not. The only cheater here is you spreading misinformation.
Cheats allow you to do things that you should not have access to, like flying without a mount or going super fast.
Spy is an addon: it notifies you when a player of the opposite faction performs an ability exactly as it would appear in your combat log. If the action wouldn’t appear in the combat log (due to stealth for example) then the addon is unable to tell of their presence.

Ok imagine a situation. I’m going to BRD, obviously I’m being ganked in the BRM as it happens quite often by the horde. I want to res. In normal situation I would res behind a pillar or behing a wall (LOS) so enemy wouldn’t see me and wouldn’t be able to target me (well that’s an advantage of a class I play). Now ppl with spy addon can instantly target me after I res, therefore going to cat stealth gives me nothing. In normal situation with visible combat log player wouldn’t be able to write target + my name so quickly (quicker than I go to stealth). With spy addon they can do it instantly, they are being instantly informed that I have ressed even if I have been invisible for them to notice, eg behind a pillar.
Personally I find it as a game exploit - cause it really is a game exploit right now and ppl are just exploiting a game to have a world pvp advantage. And in fact it is cheating.
