Detect magic is a spell in the game that is inteded for that purpose, it makes no sense to have both detect magic and addons that do the same thing, please remove 1 of them.
Can they? I thought you need to be near when the buff is acquired.
Yes they apparently can, seen videos of priests dispelling DMT buffs at kargath.
You can dispell without seeing what buffs someone has. I would like to see that video as the buffs should be hidden in the absence of detect magic.
While he should be able to dispell just fine, he should not be able to see who has the buffs and who doesnt.
I can see buffs as a Warlock without detect magic. I use shadowed frames and I think thats what shows them but not sure.
should be a base feature in the game at this point
Thats the point, it shouldnt be because detect magic already is.
If i were to guess it’s because an addon can detect the buffs in the combat log when they zone in. It should work on the same principal as the classicCastbars.
You have made an interesting and serious thread. But please stop talking about the mage ability Detect Magic. It has nothing to do with the topic.
Only mentioned it because if it wasnt in the game, we couldnt say that seeing the buffs of enemies with addons is not intended, now we can, its clearly not intended.
I completely agree with this. Aura gains should be hidden from combatlog/addons unless detect magic is up, or they are in your group.
The reason addons can see if someone has buffs is because of the SPELL_AURA combatlog event, which is triggered whenever the client draws a player within 50yd (I think that was the nerf, it used to be like max range until the Spy related nerf), this basically means every single buff is re-applied for other people’s clients if the buffed player zones in, logs in, gets ported etc. within 50 yd of you, making detect magic obsolete.
ElvUI also has this.
I wasn’t a fan of that add-on but will have to switch to it apparently because this gives a massive advantage.
Badd-ons more like it or ban ons
Just discovered myself that an addon called ClassicAuraDurations does this exact thing. This shouldn’t be allowed imo, causes so much grief for both factions and seems like an unintended exploit to me. Why this post hasn’t gotten any answers from blizzard is very weird. Maybe limiting the SPELL_AURA combatlog event is a tricky thing to fix?
Because this addon is clearly in violation of Blizzard’s In-Game Code of Conduct:
