Why did you choose to play Horde?

Alliance version (thanks to Paxmillian)

Since people always discuss “Horde bias” or “Alliance dying”, I’m actually wondering why did people choose Horde as their faction?

A few reasons I can think of:

  • Racials
    Stat bonuses and racial abilities.

  • Appearence
Prefering the looks of a race or the customization options.

  • Race lore
The races had a more interesting background story.
  • Friends
People chose Horde because their friends play there.

  • Cities / zones
Prefering the structure of certain cities / leveling areas.

  • Faction balance
People chose Horde, because they feel there’s a bigger playerbase.

  • Story
Experiencing the Horde story / Horde lore.

  • Different view
Originally Alliance players that wanted to experience the horde side of the game.

  • Others
    A reason not listed above.

I’m curious what your reason to play horde is. Since I’m planning to evaluate the responses it would be nice, if people could post leading with one of the reasons above and then go into more detail, if they wish. I’ll make sure to update the list as much as possible to include the reasons I have forgotten.

I might aswell start:

Cities / areas
The only real reason I prefer playing Horde are the main cities. I absolutely hate Stormwinds structure and always get lost, searching for a specific npc there.

I wanted a Horde alt to play the game from the other perspective :3

The races are more interesting the only reason I even play alliance is because I have a guild here.

Mainly for the story though I do like the races as well, blood elfs obviously on the top of the list but with the new customization coming so looking forward to leveling a tauren.

Exactly what I’m doing, was originally doing it to unlock Vulpera and Zandalari though. I tried playing a Vulpera for a while but I don’t like their on use racial (feels weird on some classes/specs) so I’m making a Zandalari Paladin instead.

Because there wasn’t an alternative if I wanted to play an Undead Mage. Similarily there wasn’t an alternative if I wanted to play a Human Paladin. So I didn’t really choose to play Horde… no more than I chose to play Alliance.

i need a shorter leash then i suppose.

But why did you want an undead mage?

Was it because it looks cool? Was it because you wanted the undead racial to go along with mage? Where undeads more interesting story/lore wise?

I actually play both factions, but this is my main, and he’s kind of the reason. I mean during Vanilla I had a human character called Vissari (Different server and account, long gone now), but Night Elves didn’t appeal to me. They weren’t quite…‘elf’ like as I thought of it. To quantify that statement, I’m talking Elves from myth and legend, not recent fantasy genres. I wanted something that was like the Redcaps, the Clurichaun, the grinning, beautiful yet utterly cruel leaders of Faerie warhosts, riding on steeds with ogres and orcs and goblins, Knuckers and Sprites.

I wanted those cruel Elves from legend.

Then out came TBC and I’ve never looked back. I could play the savage of soul but saintly of appearance elves from my people’s cultural myths.

Since then I got massively interested in the other Horde races, and have a character of every one of them, but equally I love some of the Alliance Ethos, and have pretty much a character of every one of them too, apart from Mechagnomes, but I will be making one for Shadowlands when the requirements are lifted.

I like both factions to be honest, because they appeal to me for different reasons, but I like the moral dichotomy of the Horde, are they “Just Monsters” or are they “Monsters -because-”. I like complex morality in my characters when I RP. I mean I do have a character on Alliance, who is absolute shining Lawful Good type mentality, a Draenei Vindicator, but he’s fun for when I want those games of being the -absolute- Good Guy.

Its the same themes I apply in LARP, My Wild Elf is an overall good guy, who is never randomly unkind, but is part of a tribal faction with a superiority complex, who selflessly works to better the survival of a fragile world, yet thinks nothing of conducting mass human sacrifices to do so.

I like the grey area, and Horde gave more chances to explore that on an RP realm.

The primary reason of me playing Horde right now is because I wanted something different. I’ve been playing Alliance since 2006 with a short time being Horde in Mists of Pandaria (half of Throne of Thunder and then for Siege of Orgrimmar) but went back to Alliance in Warlords of Draenor to play with my old guild. My guild stopped raiding before patch 8.2 and almost all of us felt like we wanted to move to another server and change to Horde since we played on a dead server at the time, so we all wanted something different; something alive and more populated, and even if we weren’t raiding together we’d still be on the same server and faction, being able to play together whenever we wanted. I long wanted to change to Horde personally because of how long I had been Alliance so I had grown a bit tired of it, but I very much prefer the Alliance cities and especially the Druid forms since that was my main in classic and TBC but was abandoned when DK’s came out.

Because:
undead seemed cool (still do)
was a “race” you rarely get to play in (MMO)RPGs
could become necromancers at some point I assumed
are the humans of Lordaeron that I played and liked in W2/3, the true leaders of the alliance

Blood elves/Nightbornebare just what i find visually the most appealing, the only reason I also play alliance is because all the horde druid races make me want to throw up.
(No offense ceran :grimacing:)

For lore reasons. Tauren overall appealed to me to draw me to the faction. Back when I started it was a co-worker who drew me to play on Alliance side, but I was always more attracted to the Red side.

I have two characters on Alliance side, but due to all the grind you had to do for high end raiding on multiple characters this expansion I felt too burned out to fresh them out.

For mythic raiding

I played Alliance from 2011 till 2020 but Vulpera are Horde exclusive so I was forced to switch factions.

I joined horde. Since I love races and style looks as badass.

But, I am very hated Garrosh and Sylvanas. Made me want leave horde.
Other horde leaders were good.
I’m stay horde, I loved my main this zala troll race.

I dont play horde, but i ended up with alliance since my friends were alliance.

I swapped from alliance to horde because story wise i felt the alliance was always on the back foot. Always reactive and overall felt weak to me.

I joined the Horde because I wanted to play as a Tauren (in WotLK). When they updated the models in WoD, I started to play Alliance too because I liked the new Dwarf model. Now I play both but my main is still a Tauren.

This used to be a Tauren when I first started playing. I picked Tauren cause I thought they were really cute ^^ not a fan of the new model though.

Also liked their druid forms better. Still do.
