I should also have said: dont lump in bloggers with journalists.
Same here, i bought several shop mounts with gold, a mount is only 2 tokens and some people spit on me. “shrugs”
Yeh those mounts pets and 1 tmog set aren’t locked off behind irl paywall.
You can get them in game. But Pandaren over in the comments doesn’t get that.
Simply put: They go for the easiest target.
Many people know of World of Warcraft, but less so do people know of FF online and ESO.
Journalists need to hit certain criteria for their articles which are as follows:
Click throughs, “impressions”, drama/comments (“Involvement”) and advert hits. So the less well known the product, company, or individual. The less reason to write an article about it.
Not that I have any issue with the WoW store but the ESO sub gives you coins you can spend in the Store anyway, so overall it -can- be a money saver. Of course in any game with a proper store, I end up emptying my wallet because I have no control (and also nothing else to spend it on).
You forgot GW2 too much stores
FF14’s store is cheaper generally.
Nowadays I don’t buy anything off of the WoW store except 6 month subs where I get the new item as a “bonus” but I have indulged on things from the FF store.
Oh gosh, that one is horrible.
I use to play that some. At launch they said things like: once you get a specific dye color, it’s unlocked to your account. Then they brought in some lady who ran free to play games with big cash store career experience. A lot changed and for over a year they got ever more greedy.
Eventually they honored their promise of dyes being unlocked to your account, BUT only after dyes were no longer profitable to sell.
No, it’s not. I just paid 6 month subscriptions for both ffxiv and wow. The ffxiv one was more than double.
Fair enough.
WoW is far from any giant any more. They merge servers all the time now. FF14 still has quite a playerbase, though as with WoW they don’t report any useful metrics. From their fiscal reporta however, I see that Blizzard always report a decline in revenue from WoW.
The only metric there is, is the fiscal reports. And for the last 5-6 years or so, they report a steady decline in revenue gemerated from WoW. It’s safe to assume that if the numbers were any good, they would also be in the notes. Lack of that is a good indication that WoW isn’t generating so much that it “carries” any more. Last report we got was around 4M subscribers, and that’s some years ago.
Subs jump up and go down. Revenue always went down after an expansion launches - even with Legion. If it continued down there would be no one playing.
You also have to count the WoW token and various other services. Subs just dont reflect that now. Sub were never for payers benefit.
Considering I’ve bought pretty much everything off the store with in-game gold (playing the game) I disagree
Same i play the game , buy a token with gold , buy store stuff … playing the game only

Can you go take a look at their store and come back saying that “nearly most” mounts and cosmetics were obtainable ingame… Because we must be playing very different FFXIV. From the top of my head I can think of 2 or 3 mounts that were obtainable ingame and the store has like 30 mounts. On top of that they sell housing items, animations (dances etc), glamour items (aka transmogs)…
And tbh I think it is way worse to remove items from the game and then sell those for real money. Not that I care what is or isn’t in each game’s shop. I just don’t get why Blizzard is the bad guy when pretty much every online game has a store full of exclusives.
The game has several issues, due to lack of proper direction.
Such as old content is irrelevant and not re-playable at max level, no account bound progression, alt unfriendly, heavy grinding, faction unbalances, server unbalances, blizz workers getting fired or quit-ing, lack of roadmap so that community can request features, … f man, list goes on an on…
And you focus on subjects like this?! If you want the transmog, farm gold, get tokens, and get the transmog!! You don t spend real money!! You spend TIME!!
Everything about wow is time!!
I have more against paying every two years for a new expansion than this!! Because that cosmetic, is OPTIONAL!! You don’t need to buy that!!
No devs got fired.
Actually when the ESO devs changed racials bonuses(was nerfed) they gave everyone 3 free race changes - everyone means everyone single player. And community was very unhappy, coz they had a lot of alts, they raging a lot. Dunno how this story ends. Imagine something like this in WoW - Its impossible, actually WoW shop is overpriced by a lot.
