Why do you play retail, and not classic?

Honest question, not meant to start a riot/discussion about what version is better. This is subjective anyway.

If you play both, again: why?

Classic is just boring to me. That’s it really

Same reason here.

Because I don’t have nostalgic feelings about old versions, and there’s nothing to pick my interest in classic.

classic just feels to slow for me, long downtimes and mobs take forever to kill.

I thoroughly enjoyed my playthrough of Classic. But there were a few things that bugged me, both from a player mindset pov and from Blizzard’s side. I took a break, never liked TBC, wasn’t hyped about Wrath, and there are plenty of things I love about retail. So back to retail I went on my return

I had a wonderfull journey from vanilla classic to mid wrath, but family obligations made it impossible to raid on a schedule. I switched to retail because it offers a lot more for a player with irregular playtimes.

Retail is just where I’ve always been its always been current.

I was stupid and missed out on Classic because it came out when I was focusing on other things. It meant that I missed out on the community and genuine ā€œfirst timeā€ feel of everyone doing Vanilla again.

Now its too late, I feel. Everyone has been there and done it. Its not the same. We’re almost through Wrath and I missed the boat.

I just leveled a char to 80 on wotlk classic. The first 60 were mind numbing and the rest simply uninteresting.
We’ll try re-doing the raids in cata but all in all the game just feels slow and unpolished now that we’ve seen retail.
It had its magic in the early 2000s…but so did pac man 40 years ago.

I played classic back when it was retail, and while it was great fun back then (I’m still here, after all), it’s achingly slow by today’s standards.

Besides, the thrill of just wandering around Azeroth that i felt back then is gone, been there, done that, got the ā€œLoremasterā€-achievement.

every class I play just has smoother rotation and more options on retail than classic, and I think I’m at the point where I prefer retails gearing pace. the addition of M+ for gearing in PvE has been a godsend for me and the fact that PvP gearing up takes 0 time and catchup is nearly instant makes me not lose interest before I’m geared up.

I get that. I personally feel they will re-release classic 2019 at one point because we lost TBC and are gonna lose wrath once cata hits. Imo they can’t just zerg ahead into expansions and keep calling them classic, and eventually they will hit WoD or BfA and people will just stop playing classic. So at some point they will reset it all.

Several reasons:

  • I’ve played this game since launch, so for me Classic isn’t ā€˜new’. I have no desire to do that stuff again.
  • I really dislike the old models/textures. I want WoW to look as good as it can.
  • I think that modern WoW is simply a better game. With better systems in place to make the overal experience better. Think of it like this: Classic is camping in the wilderness, while Modern WoW is staying at a resort with all kinds of amenities. Both can be great experiences, but one can appeal more to a certain type of person.

Those are the main reasons why I don’t and will not play Classic - until Classic MoP becomes a thing because I never experienced that expansion ā€˜live’, so to speak. So I’m willing to try that to see how I like it.

I finished WotLK over a decade ago. If I want to play (most of) that content I can still do so, but I don’t have to do it with the inferior gameplay of the time :man_shrugging:t2:

I’ve tried classic, my ā€œmainā€ is still 69 in Netherstorm. Most of the time I just miss the many quality of life changes they introduced since then and as a collector i’ve got too many things to do in retail too to divide my time between two versions.

I had fun memories of that time with great people. Most are no longer playing this game. I do not wish to sully that memory with the average playerbase that the game has now.

Slow gameplay, lack of any endgame goal i dont like raid logging and having nothing else to do, u cant really collect mounts imo its pointless and just a waste of time but thats personal opinion ofc.

Classic races are kind of homogenous and boring. Just humans, short humans, shorter humans, thicc green humans, tall athletic humans, tall blue humans with tusks.

Put the modern racial variety into classic and I’d give it some serious thought.

That said, classic levelling = a chore. Done it many times, I do not want to do it again, not even once. I am levelled out. But that is also a lot of the gameplay in classic, so the lack of endgame is a let down for me.

Classic is like old crusty rpg, you played it once like a single player game and that’s it.
I leveled my warlock to 80 and don’t want to play endgame, because it’s quite primitive and not as high quality as retail endgame
