Why does it feel like Nostalrius was a much better experience for so many of us

This is supposed to be “a hundred times” better than a private server right, and yet this doesn’t feel nearly as fun overall. Seems like something is really lacking. I don’t know, maybe it’s just that we don’t feel the love for it? Maybe the communication is the real issue? Maybe the nostalrius forums were something really special as well? Maybe it’s because that’s when tons of people tried vanilla for the first time?

I’m comparing both experiences, and I can’t shake that feeling that I had so much more fun playing on Nostalrius, but I’m not 100% clear on why that is, and I know it’s the same for other people too…so yeah I’m curious.

The social design is the key difference. It severely limits the immersion.

Love for a game, for a project, for a community vs business = you’re gonna feel the difference pretty quickly.

Blizzard’s a business, and the passion’s not there anymore. Nostalrius was made by nerds, geeks, fans of the game, who worked hard for the community. Not to mention that more than +90% of private servers are made by scammers, and I played on quite a few of them, so I should know.

Nostalrius had some issues, but overall, it was something unique, it had a soul of its own, and the nostalgia that came with it was powerful enough to awaken the whole vanilla revival movement.

TLDR: classic is ok, but the love that was poured on the Nostalrius project made you feel like you were at the right place, and that money wouldn’t come and …uck it all up.

a gaming community that isnt made of a bunch of crying twitch fangirls.
everyone is “pro” because they watch a stream of their idol man.
the game is broken in many ways, theres faction collusions, mafias, addons breaking pvp, bad serverlags, blizzard not doing anything.

i unsubbed  im playing hitman 2 now and enjoying it 100x more then classic as of now.

if your intension isnt to make a game work out but just “attract subs before the ship sinks” you get classic tadaa…

i enjoyed privates 100x more then classic
the gaming community isnt what it was, with the money involved, sponsorships, and the twitch disney fangirls

Blizzard should be careful about the whole thing though. People are massively starting to think that classic wow is “vanilla lite”, because it’s obvious that they didn’t try very hard and that the philosophy was something like “hey let’s just throw them a 1.12 vanilla with 0 consideration about what could be wrong about that”.

The more they keep disappointing people, the more people will leave, and the more likely it would be for the past to repeat itself.

Nost and other private servers were running patches pre 1.12 and these progressively whereas “Classic” is running 1.13/pre TBC patch where everything is nerfed to the ground.
Content and world on private servers felt more immersive because everything was harder mobs, dungeons, raids etc. … main reason why current AV sucks also, it’s a joke.

if you dont like it, you can go back anytime. bye.

I honestly believe that the #nochanges crew have also kicked themselves in the face by sticking to their guns.

Private servers would seek to solve an i"ssue" should the community cry out for it but blizzard are now bound to change NOTHING for fear of going back on the no changes promise.

Classic WoW should have brought together the “best” of vanilla across all of its patch releases and not stuck to one. Yes 1.12 was seen as the most “complete” patch but after a decade of camp fire stories filled with tales of 2 day long AV battles etc… We are left with what the #nochanges crowd longed for and now complain about.

I love the game dearly and have been here since BC. Though I have my reservations and criticism, I would still rather my money go to the creator of the game.

Many years of fun on a certain private server will always be with me however :slightly_smiling_face::heart:

Id say tis because all the people who should have stayed on retail came to classic.

If this is the case, where are all the DW shamans?

The talents from 61 to 70 made a very big difference for what weapon to use.

Sarcasm is a thing.

Maybe, because this is the “actual” classic and not Nostalrius (some private server). Thus, people are more centered about min-maxing the game to the limit, racing each other in order to reap the rewards and be the best of the best. There isn’t actually anything wrong with the game itself. Its just that the community was more laid back in Nostalrius, cuz every1 knew pserver wouldn’t last forever unlike official server. Its the community that makes the game great, and its the community that breaks the game.

I think on classic we have other community much more toxic sнit eaters around.

Remove batching. Problem solved.

I believe, as others have mentioned, two big differences are the community and communication with the developers.

Private servers were mainly played by die-hard fans who loved the game and to share their passion and experiences with others (no, not all, but many). And, the communities were smaller, players were happy about every newcomer. Now in Classic we seem to have many “elitist” players who rather send you to google than explain things, and everyone has to be perfect. “Can’t completely commit to the game? Don’t play the perfect specc? Pull too slowly? Get out. We’ll find someone else.”

At the same time, the servers were run by die-hard fans, too. The GMs loved to play the game and to interact with the community. People got responses to issues, quickly, and these were written in a way that showed the players that the GMs cared. The aim was to help players and enable them to have the best possible experience. One of the most inspiring things I saw in streams of the Classic-beta was that GMs were among the players and joked around and interacted with them. In live-Classic we have completely overworked GMs with their hands bound by policy about what they can and can’t do and say. There seems to be little passion, but how could they maintain any passion if they keep getting insulted or confronted with x mentions of issues or requests about which they can’t do anything.

2 days AV, they were brilliant !
i agree with you on most things actually,
i unsubbed this month, classic is just a joke not worth a monthly subscription.

bought hitman 2 gold edition for 15 euro and i enjoy it a lot more over this classic crap they shoved down our troaths.

13 a month for classic is a very bad investment at this rate.
classic is a sinking ship, rather if it was a ship it would probly be named titanic !
theres so many things wrong and broken and blizzard has ZERO feedback to their community.

they bring ZERO SOLUTIONS so far and they have made decisions to frown for, id get fired on my job if i would make such bad decisions really.

the amount of bots, cheaters, TOS breakers, horde/allaince colluders etc etc are out is UNREAL !
i dont like to drag fortnite into this, but atleast we can compare it to WOW as in how popular it IS/WAS.
they have banned ppl cheating FAMOUS OR NOT, rules are rules.

make some examples out of the bannhammer and make ppl fear the mighty bannhammer!

what has blizzard done so far?
allowd almost any abuse up to this point, gave a horrible unfair advantage for some ppl (who are swimming in gold cuz of it)

broken game = broken.
goodluck with classic, im not wasting any more of my life on that.

I just think a lot of us are getting older. and not liking classic doesn’t mean we would like retail haha

You had no subscription fee, eh? :stuck_out_tongue: Well, I know one thing that’s better in Classic than any pserver. I don’t have to play with the risk of losing my account at any second. And that’s why I never set foot on any pserver, and never will.
