Thanks for all your replies, folks. There’s a few things I would like to add / make clearer.
First of all, if you enjoy dragon riding, great! This is a game, it’s supposed to be fun, so if you’re having fun, excellent. (Also, don’t let my negative feelings about this stop you from checking it out - you may like it anyway. I know a lot of my guildies do.)
My problem with dragon riding is, I feel bullied into using a mechanic I hate, while there has been a perfectly fine system in place for years now. That is why I’m angry. I don’t like the kind of flying (or riding, for that matter) where you can only move forward, and not strafe or stop without either falling down or dismounting - or crashing headlong into a conveniently placed obstacle. Dragon riding may be faster, sure, but as I said before, I prefer control and manoeuverability - and I’ll happily trade in speed to get it.
Which is why making dragon riding optional would have been so good: If you like it, great - you get high speed and new mounts as a reward for taking the time to learn it. If you don’t like it, fine, just use your own mounts - but you’re not getting punished for not wanting to use the system, yet that is how it feels now. Either you go dragon riding, or you’re stuck on a ground mount.
Blizzard seems to know only sticks as a motivational tool. Someone should inform them of the existence of carrots.
honestly as much i disliked dragon riding at the start once i got all 48 glyphs its super easy to use its way faster then regular flying and i don’t miss the hover mode that much plus if your primerly gathering you can easily refill your vigour by having the gathering perk in the dragon riding tree
Well, I bit the bullet and bought Dragonflight…
After initially being put off by some of the comments, I have to say dragonriding is both fun and frustrating…
Fun when you get going but frustrating when you are at the bottom of the map and can’t get back to where you want to be…
I’m sure this will get better the more I progress
It does make a huge different to have all the glyphs. If you have a friend or guildy they can carry you around so it’s easier to collect the glyphs. This is how I got them
I’m confused.
Are you really considering leaving the game because dragon riding “feels clunky”? That’s it?
Flying from the start with a faster system instead of not being able to fly at all until much later is “harming myself”?
Even if you’re not a fan of the system, “makes me furious”? “physical revulsion”?
You had to “log off to protect myself from my mounting anger”?
Wtf? xD
Waaaaaaaaaahhh!! Blizzard removed noclip from the game, and now I have to actually engage with a game play system that the world was designed around, rather than being able to cheat flight AFK to my destination/for my favorite herbalism/mining bot/alt tab while I fly (pick yours)
– Literally every person complaining about this, ever.
I’m genuinely fascinated by this. Can you elaborate on what you struggled with so much? Iirc they are pretty much just flying through a few rings. I’m not trying to be rude or anything so please don’t take offense I am just really curious.
My eyesight is poor (eye condition). I could see the first two or three rings but after that due to speed and light coloured rings poorly contrasted against a bright sky after the first few rings it was just a matter of luck whether or not I hit any more.
I’m fine with Dragon Riding as a means of getting from A to B, even if I end up stranded on the side of a mountain every now and then, but the aerobatics required for the Diving through Rings was a struggle that didn’t need to be there. I will never use that in the game. Those wishing to do races and such could have had separate side quests to be introduced to these features.
I’m not saying Dragon Riding is bad or should be removed. In fact I think it’s better than no flying that we’ve had in the last few expansion.
As one of the people that gets made sick by dragon flying, I would very much like to have the option of normal flying so I can get around the game without having to have constant vertigo and motion sickness.
I also find it deeply disorienting in a way that is just unpleasant.
Ontop of this, I have over 500 mounts. I would like to be able to use them and not just the four. They are something that has taken me a lot of time, effort, and work to collect and I would very much like to use them.
Dragon riding encourages you to look at the landscape by forcing you to notice elevation, especially before unlocking all talents.
I think blizzard was hoping the community would have enough devotion to the game to learn this feature and realize you can use it almost the same way as old flying. They’ll just have to add this to the long list of disappointments caused by a vocal part of the player base who prefers complaining to playing games.
I see! Thanks for explaining. I can see how that makes things more difficult.
Pretty much this, Blizzard saying it would invalidate all the hard work of zone design never made sense to me in the first place tbh. It just meant they had to design zones with flying in mind which they never really did. With how the zones are in DF with dragon riding in mind they’ve clearly shown it can be done.
I genuinely like flying around zones and looking at the scenery. I also like being able to stop and look around without worrying about crashing in the ground.
Jade Forest is one of my favourites for if you just want a calm place with beautiful scenery, but there are a lot of other zones that are just lovely to take a tour of. I don’t know if this is something many other people do, but I defiantly do it.
Do you think blizzard implement this to hurt your feelings? Come on man where is your spine. You play a game and it will have things included you dont like. Its like that with every game and its something thay will always stay. Any game cant please its users with everything they like?
Stop being a crybaby and just use the flying system. Better accept it and enjoy the game then get stuck up with flying. Getting fron a to b is just a way to travel through the game.
