Heyo. I’m probably not the person one would expect to make a thread about this. I RP a Troll so guns are rarely even part of my RP, but I remembered the other day that there’s a huge stigma surrounding /yell Gunshot!
I’m here to ask why that is, and state some reasons as to why I think the stigma makes no sense.
A) Guns are loud, making sure others who aren’t in Emote range hear about it, only makes sense from a stand-point of realism.
B) It creates RP. If people hear a gun going off, they can react to it and make their way over there to get in on it. Conflict makes for the best RP, no?
The main problem with it, I believe is the lack of information. Just yelling gunshot is useless. Most people won’t bother to whisper the individual with a “from where tho?”
Because you should at least be able to make out the general direction of a loud noise.
So, I don’t think a yell for a gunshot itself is frowned upon, more like the poor delivery.
So, say /y gunshot from the direction of the bridge leading from Cathedral Square to the Dwarven District. would be far more player friendly and would create easier access to join in on the RP.
However there’s also always the off chance of bubble RPers or trolls doing it, so one would tend to be wary of such.
Another factor that has contributed to the stigma of it is the sheer frequency. There have been times where Stormwind is more akin to the worst neighbourhood in Detroit, not the capital of the Alliance.
Does it tho? Sure, you describe a perfect scenario, but the fact that people wholeheartedly avoid everything NPCed in the public hubs - it barely promotes any reasonable sense to go and look for that very gunshot that, from a logical perspective, would’ve been already found out by guards and whatnot
As far as i know, it comes from the amount of edgy criminal Roleplayers in Old Town. Whenever i’m in Stormwind and i hear /y GUNSHOT, i think “Well, another uncalled shot in Old Town.”
My view is that it’s not only a needless irritant but also a lazy emote that works against its purpose of conveying information by being chronically inadequate. The loud, telltale crack of a flintlock echoes from the direction of an Old Town alley is a much better example of an emote to communicate and inform your surroundings of what is taking place than a spammy GUNSHOT that tells no one anything useful to act upon.
Exactly that. That line/limit you talk about varies a lot for many people. I know people, who roleplay grind on faction leader to be an IC thing (not the kills, but the attacks-possible-assassinations themselves), whilst I detest some even vague approval of public murderers, who escape with smoke bombs
