Why people use addons?

I like to know what reasons people have to use addons.

Options for actionbars are slim at best without add-ons. I find the default layout for actionbars to be awful. I never liked it, even back in Vanilla. As soon as I found a way to change it with an add-on, I did.

I have installed Extra Chat Font Sizes as it means I can have the chat readable using a bigger font, and Energy Watch so I can have nice big Mana and Health bars, as Blizzards own accessibility settings don’t include things like that, if I can find one that increases the size of the text in the quest log I would add that to the list as long as it didn’t include any guiding arrows or map markers.

To customize game options a bit to make it a better experience for myself.

Bartender for better action bar layout (and more options), Pitbull for nicer unitframes (I much prefer seeing percentages of health/mana instead of totals for instance). Damage/threat meters are helpful as a tank too

Kinda cherrypicking the QoL you want to add, instead of game forcing them all upon you want it or not.

Some are for fun or because they make the UI more in line with your play style.

I have downloaded atlas loot just because I want to check drops I don’t remember and have fun linking stuff.

Bekuz mang, all ma favurite pro streamarz R using dem

At low level I’m fine with default UI but by the time you have two action bars of situational abilities and it’s on the right side of the screen like a dummy; the need arises.

  1. Hate having to open invidiual bags to search for this one item I need, so I use an addon to simply display my inventory as one.

  2. On my big screen the default unit frames are so far away from the center of my field of view I constantly have to move my eyes to check out my health and mana, which is pretty distracting and straining. So I use an addon for unit frames.

  3. My guild spams Twitch Emotes so of course I need TwitchEmotesV2

You can increase the scale of the entire UI in Advanced system settings. If that doesn’t get the size big enough you might be able to user Skinner to fix the problem, although currently it’s not correctly skinning the qustlog.

I have similar problems and can’t play without addons, because the UI is too bright for me and the fonts too small.

Atlasloot to see possible drops in dungeons.

first time playing wow?

I’m using Clique to allow me to use my 19 button mouse for healing without having to write out mouse-over macros.

Unfortunately space limits me to a 24" monitor (I can’t afford a bigger house) and I already have the UI set on the large size, in WoW the Actions bars, bags ect, take up the whole of the bottom of the screen almost, the chat box has to go above them. I would love to be able to resize certain sections of the UI, I don’t need to see the action bars I know what keys do what, but I do need to be able to read quest text etc and be able to see my character and some of the area around them.

Allowing addons is a balancing act, some are great and help level the playing field for those with disabilities, others I feel go too far in hand holding and playing the game for you.

  1. They want to play easy mode game. They don’t want to guess mob HP, so they install addon for that. They don’t want to read combat log and watch casting animations, so they install addon for that. They don’t want to read quests, so they install addon for that. They don’t want to learn tactics, so they install addon for that. They don’t want to manage bags, so they install addon for that. They don’t want to analyze AH, so they install addon for that. That’s the majority of reasons people use addons.
  2. They want to customize their UI. Some people like square UI instead of fantasy WoW UI. So they install addons to customize unit frames, for example. Though those addons often provide advantage over standard UI, so this might overlap with first reason.
  3. They are forced to install addon by their guildies or friends. That’s the worst thing but it happens.

Probably because they want to play BfA but don’t want to admit it

I returned wow and abandon FFXIV because wow has addons and that gives a new whole world.

Auctioning is only funny with addons. Damage optimizacion is only possible with addons that gives you numbers. Aggro control is only possible with addons, talents and equip optimization=addons, etc.

So, if you love numbers, you going to love addons. If you hate numbers, addons won’t help you.

You can also use combat log and upload it to warcraftlogs. It provides much better and much more useful analytics tool.

To make my game experience the wa yI want it.
