It’s a bit of a disaster. Our character portraits look like google maps markers with a random arrow in the bottom corner that does nothing.
But weird artstyle aside, it’s just less functional than the old one that worked out of the box. If I want to make my quest tracker bigger, I need to scale up the entire UI from the settings menu. Then I need to make the action bars smaller. But this makes them pixelated and illegible. If I want the icons to look normal in stead of a pixelated mess, I need to tinker with the UI scale slider and icon sizes. However, the only setup I’ve found so far where most of the UI is legible, non-distorted and non-blurry… the quest tracker (whose text size is only determined by the settings menu, not edit mode) is tiny, pixelated and illegible.
And don’t get me started on the fact none of the sliders actually slide. They move in predetermined increments and if those increments aren’t to your liking, screw you I guess. Special mention to the fact that edit mode’s sliders work in increments of 10%… that’s a lot. Meanwhile UI scale sliders are like… “oh here’s 79%, the next notch is 84%, haha work that out”.
Oh and the new cast bar… why doesn’t increasing its size increase the text size, only the bar’s width? Why is everything bright yellow and so blinky in towns? The “zzz” animation on the portrait is very busy and distracting, as is the pulsating heavy glow on the already way-too-bright yellow portrait frame. With its stupid little arrow inside the portrait that points to nothing.
I liked the style and functionality of the old UI, and I didn’t ask for a new one. I didn’t want or need a new one.
I feel like I logged in, knowing humans don’t like change, and I’ve tried to be patient.
But it’s bad. I’m sorry, it’s just so much work to even get the basic functions back, which I used to have before the patch. And even then, it’s busy, blinky, loud, obnoxious, user-unfriendly, and doesn’t match the game’s style.
I’m sorry to rag on someone’s project but really, the design elements are something you’d learn in basic design classes. They’ve basically made all the choices UI-wise that a mobile cashgrab game makes. Lots of bright, blinking distraction slapping the user telling them to “look here look here quick quick”. Meanwhile the basic “out of the box” version is uneditable in Exile’s Reach, and floats in the middle of the screen obscuring most of the gameplay on default settings.
I do not want to have to work this hard to make the game playable. It shouldn’t take hours of tinkering with the basic UI and fitting it with external addons to make it function. The beauty of it was that it didn’t need addons. And lo and behold - those who liked the addons, still use them anyhow.
That’s my little rant on the subject. I’m sure nothing will change though, since this has all been brought up in alpha and beta. WoW is simply one of those games where you need to pay to betatest their game but they don’t take the feedback. That’s how it’s always been and how it always will be.
I’m at peace with that, but I do enjoy a natter about the technical difficulties once in a while. Gets it out of my system.
