Why the public shaming of newbies?

Hello there.

So, after quitting over a year ago after playing since wotlk, I decided to give the game a new chance (because nobody ever quits WoW forever I guess) and as I make a new account (for reasons), I noticed that friends (people who have their old account still and played regulary since I quit) have a flag above their head and see a murloc above my head.

So my question: Why does Blizzard publically mark new accounts?
Cool, that you want people to help new players and all, but we all know what is going to happen in WoW:

New Account? Pfffff, get the frick out of my group, newbie.

So, please disable that stuff. This is literally public shaming. Marking a group of the player base because they aren’t the same.

-200 IQ Mode.

Also: The Flag on Veteran players can stay, thats cool and doesnt bring any negative effect, but the flag on newbies needs to be disabled asap.

In Gw2, where you stole the Mentor-Idea from anyway, newbies/new accounts arent flagged, only people can tag up as Mentor and provide help to new guys freely out of choice, but because you decide it HAS to be flagged.

Sorry for the rant and with this rant I guess I’m officially back (for now)

People who act like that are not worth your time.
What mark are you talking about though? I have never noticed it.
If anything though I would be more inclined to spend more time teaching useful things to a new player

Doesnt change anything from the fact that I’m flagged as newbie without wanting it to. I know most of the game, the lore, old raids, old quests etc. I simply don’t know about Shadowlands stuff, so why that flag?

Not a thought through idea by Activision.

GW2 is doing oh so well…

I never saw it in GW2 but it is in FF14… you get a seedling icon when you are new - thing is though people are really patient and understanding there and help you out when you are new to a role or the content… but in WoW I don’t think it’s that great an idea - it’s a totally different community (or lack of)

I honestly agree with you.
There’s a reason because that system works so well for FFXIV and that’s because the community is heavily focused on RP and social interaction.
WoW’s community is way too toxic and ā€œelitistā€.

I do think players should be in there to start with, but have the option to leave whenever they want.

How do they mark new accounts for everyone to see? I always thought anyone without Heirlooms was a newb.

It’s the same in ESO on ps4. There aren’t addons on console to test dps, but if you go to a training dummy at a house anyone there can see your dps… so if you want to raid in a guild you have to prove your dps to them.

There is a clear divide there between casuals and elitists… and sadly there are far too many elitists.

Are you kidding? They make a killing with the cash shop.

Their ah system is the best I have ever seen in a game and they keep lowbie mats in demand even for higher level stuff.

That’s sad. But that’s how it goes and always will unfortunately.

dont only mentors see the murloc above your head?

Friend said, I have a Murloc Icon above my head.

No thanks, with WoWs community, I’d rather not be publically flagged as newbie even tho I am not.

Thats problems just waiting to happen.

I agree on the disable-option, or simply remove that thing right away.

Not every newbie wants to be swarmed by ā€œhelpfulā€ guys anyway, some just play the game and want to relax.

So please: Remove asap/Patch in a disable-function.

I have never seen that murloc thing. Is it real? Anyone has a screenshot to see how it looks like?

Also who says that? If it really happens just ignore the trolls? Sounds like 12 yeard old anger.

This is from wowhead

Besides their chat indicators in the Newcomer chat, Guides and Newcomers can identify each other in the world - Guides will have green flags above their head, while Newcomers will have murlocs. Only guides can see murloc icons, and only newcomers can see the green flags.

If someone announces to the group you are a newcomer I would report them so they lose that status.

Personally I don’t want to be a guide.

its been a new feature that has just been implemented i highly doubt they will remove it.

guess you threw a hissy fit for nothing.

edit: meh, Dottie beat me to it.

The only people that see that murloc are people that volunteered to be ā€œguidesā€ for new players.

I really doubt they would do any form of public shaming.

PS: I agree that new players should be able to remove it if they want.
But at that point your point rather looks like complaining about a problem that never happened.

here’s how it looks

Also, Azulkol, thats a problem waiting to happen. If every ā€œultra proā€ signs up as mentor, we have a whole new problem.

i might want to add that you are only in the mentor programme until level 20 then you dont have access to it anymore, hence the murloc gets removed. takes literally no time to level to 20+.

This system is there so that people ā€œshouldā€ act helpful and understanding towards new accounts.

OP’s post just makes me sad. People in FFXIV will usually cut you a lot of slack if you have a sprout or returner icon. Everyone was a new player at some point. We should all remember that.
