This makes much more sense to me now. So there isn’t really any risk of being called names because you have a new account, you can chill and enjoy the game
Nah.
Elitists sign up as “Mentor” to see newbies and filter them out > Same thing.
System is abusable and flags you publically. Get rid of that asap.
Do you still appear as “new player” when you reach max level though? When does it disappear?
You are filtered out from what? Leveling dungeons? I think you see bad people everywhere, it’s not really like that in game.
No, once you are level 20 you are no longer counted as a newcomer.
It seems really there to get them started, that’s it.
Upon reaching level 20, new players will continue the journey ahead on their own and will no longer have access to the Newcomer Chat.
I’m not sure if we play the same game, but WoW has always been one of the more toxic communities. There are some normal people, yeah, but the majority is not in the good-helpy mood.
And yes, you, the reader, is a totally holy person and charges to aid whenever he can, but most people aren’t.
If I compare WoW to GW2, the communities are completly different.
It has exploitable mechanics, its publically flagging and if we do that in RL, we might aswell bring back jew-stars.
Atleast implement a disable function for that stuff.
There’s a difference between being a newbie and being a noob.
A newbie can be taught. A noob cannot. He will merely repeat the same mistakes over and over, while at the same time holding opinions about the game revolving around his sole enjoyment and not that of the group.
I’ve played this game since Closed US Beta back in 2004 and I’ve generally always helped people in need - provided that they are capable of learning. If you act like an idiot, I will merely ignore you and go about my business, leaving you to bother someone else instead.
People, who act like that, are wasting time of anyone, who is kicked by them from dungeons and raid groups.
I am usually happy to help people out. I have a friend who is now able to boost me in arenas (he is close to glad rank where I can barely get to 1800), when we met he didn’t even know how to set a keybind, what was a dungeon etc.
Howerver, I don’t help people with that attitude, screaming “elisist and toxic” to everyone and anyone. You also says you don’t want to appear as a new player but you want people to help you, which makes zero sense to me.
Being nice and polite with a more positive attitude will get more people to talk with you or help out
Instead of getting rid of it they can just do a simply fix.
Something like in the previous week if you didn’t complete X instances with new players or Y amount of quests with them, then you get removed from the mentor system.
So the people who actually want to help will naturally stay, while the ones who just want to filter out newbies and not play with them will not remain for long in the system.
Which is why I recommend for anyone who is not trying to get hardcore to look for a guild that puts being a decent person above all else.
i dont think they should do that, given the fact that there arent even enough newbies to go around and they are thrown out of the mentor system at level 20. the chats are already fairly empty.
“oh no i have only helped 9 out of 10 people this week, quick, i need to force myself onto someone to be not thrown out of the mentor programme.” yeah…i dont think this would solve anything.
it should be there for people who want to help. it shouldnt feel like a chore that you have to fulfill a quota. if someones being a douche just report them or write a ticket, problem solved. dont make it more complicated than it needs to be.

I agree with that, I only suggested it because the other poster was saying it can be abused. I don’t know, I’m not in it yet so I have no idea, but if there are a lot of people abusing it then something more than “just report” should be needed.
If it’s just a few guys that have little to no impact, then no problem staying as is.
well, nothing is perfect. everything can be abused one way or another, thats why the report and ticket system exists. if you dont report rude behavior, nothing happens.

hats why the report and ticket system exists. if you dont report rude behavior, nothing happens.
Sure, and I am all for it of course. What I meant is, if a significant amount of people still abuse it even with people reporting, something else would be needed. But as I said, I’m not in the mentor system yet so I am not really aware of what’s going on, I was just replying with basis on what that poster said.

I honestly agree with you.
There’s a reason because that system works so well for FFXIV and that’s because the community is heavily focused on RP and social interaction.
WoW’s community is way too toxic and “elitist”.
couldn’t agree more
Only people that signed up as mentors will see the Murloc icon. So I don’t see much of a problem with it. If they act bad: a report will make sure they disqualify as mentors.
Slight nitpick: MMO’s are an old genre, the mentor system has been around quite before GW2.
Welcome back btw, its nice to see new and returning players. I returned in Legion myself after the Cata launch made me quit WoW.
I belive since the pre patch they added a new account and mentor system.
We’ve actually actively recruited new and returning players over the past few months. They usually bring the newcomers excitement with them and that’s fun.
I agree with OP, that newbie murloc symbol should be voluntary. Just add tickbox somewhere in settings to turn it off. There is no need or benefit for forcing new (or like in this case: experienced returning player) to carry any extra icon over their head annoyncing they are “new” unles they spesificially want to.
If theres a newbie in my party i will protect and care for it as if it were my child. No one dares to yell at my murloc!
