I’m not certain about this but when the original owner of a custom chat goes offline, the most senior person is made owner.

So whoever is online longest

May I interest you in an alternative – the official Blizzard-owned channel (no player will inherit the mod rank) – [4.LookingForGroup] which you can join by right-clicking the General tab -> settings -> Global Channels --> and then ticking LookingForGroup and even WorldDefense if you want.

I honestly don’t know why the channels aren’t an auto-join for every player.

It is the Vanilla way for sure.

This. Or type in chat /join lookingforgroup and it’ll put you in that official channel. Joining /LFG or /World is custom, and those who are in custom channels for long enough get automatically ranked up in it, giving them power to kick/ban and put a password on the channel.
