World First vs. DBM : Technically speaking 🛠

How exactly is it cheating if it’s literally allowed while the mechanics are built with this (and similar) addon(s) in mind?

None of them used DBM instead they used weak aura’s made by there own team and approved by blizzard.

Of course they could. Weakauras and the such are a nice to have. They arent a necessity. Especially for the top players.

As others have pointed out they would just use stopwatches etc irl again as people did in the past. Or have teamviewer like setup on the second screen that has an ERT Note running whenever you pull.

Being capable of remembering boss mechanics, awareness, etc. those all are SKILLS you need to have, and use to beat the boss. The moment you are offloading your skills onto a 3rd party software with perfect memory, and ability to inform you what, and when happens including warning to what you’re doing wrong IS CHEATING.

You can cheat with add-ons in WoW due to neglect and incompetence of dev’s, and the fact that add-ons are allowed doesn’t mean you can cheat boss encounters with them.
Addons were designed to add functionality to e.g. UI, and not to replace your part of your human skills when performing in game.

Also, if you want to argue about “rules”, then I may interest you with Multiboxing ban which happen because people successfully showed that the fact that you are siting behind your keyboard and pressing buttons, it doesn’t mean that 3rd party assist is not cheating

I’ve never been banned for multi boxing.

It’s doable without third party stuff.

Just like the raids.

But when they’re designed with the expectation that boss mods will be made, and then continue to allow them by way of api(they can block any functionality they want, they could make DBM not work tomorrow if they wanted), is it really cheating when it’s inside the rules?

No. The answer is no.

I will say, however, that I’d pay to see a group prog and kill mythic raz without having NY addons that aren’t the rwf crew.

That’s not the point.
The point is that people argued that software used to multibox is legal, because Blizzard said so, and then Blizzard did 180 and banned this software, because after few debates it was obvious that it’s an automation which is effectively cheating.

The same goes for add-ons like DBM, the fact that Blizzard allows add-ons, and that you can beat a boss without DBM, doesn’t mean that it’s not 3rd party software which allows for cheating.

Basically, the argument about rules means nothing, because they are arbitrary, and the existence of the rule isn’t a proof that something isn’t cheating.

They banned the keystroke replicator. This software wasnt required to Multibox and merely made it a ton easier. Blizzard made that abundantly clear when they specified the current rules.

As long as the rules are as they are current it is not cheating. Your argument is void as its whole basis is “the rules could change”. Fact is that addons are as old as this game and it isnt a seperate software program that is being used here but a file that has to be put within the games folder and gets detected by blizzard in its entirety and then bound into the game.

Your argument is equal to “this isnt legal. Just because its legal now doesnt mean that the laws cant change in the future”

DBM isnt cheating as it stands currently. Simple as. If an addon does too much it either gets entirely disabled and banned (as did AV Enabler for instance. Blizzard also altered what their API sends out ontop of that) or altered (as did DBM and MRT after HFC and Weakaura during Dreadlords while within a raid instance.)

In HFC’s case DBM/MRT was required for Archimonde mythic hands down unless you wanted to up the average wipe counter to 800+ instead of 300 and subsequently nerfed as to not make such mechanics the norm or give birth to something even more insane.

What i find absolutely hilarious is how you lot always go “dbm this dbm that” while DBM gets hard ignored by most raiders a couple pulls in and becomes part of the background noise someone ignores.

Also it wouldnt change anything. Lets say you disable all the addons. Great. Now you have even more backseat raid leading while also having every raider open a team viewer like setup on their second screen etc where a separate note is running to replace the in game note addon while also removing the need to use a stopwatch irl (as was used in the past). You now have effectively changed nothing and only made it more inconvenient.

I know you seen this but mulitbox it is allowed just some types of programs are not allowed anymore. There are a few boxers on the forums still using perfectly blizzard approved set ups.

cool story, same addon overuse as in PVP

That’s not the point.
The point is that when people argued that this software is fine because hurr durr rUleS, Blizzard turned around, and banned what people argued was legal, and not cheating.

Basically, arguing that a given software isn’t cheating because Blizzard allows it means nothing, because Blizzard rules are subjective and arbitrary, and they don’t serve as proof to whether something is or isn’t cheating.

So the fact that Blizzard allows addons, doens’t prove that software like DBM isn’t cheating.

The argument isn’t whether Blizzard is right, but whether software like DBM is cheating.

Arguing that it isn’t cheating, because Blizzard allows it, is equivalent to arguing that if a given country allows people to e.g. steal, then it’s not stealing anymore. Well, no, it’s still stealing, just with permission.

Same goes for Blizzard and DBM. The fact that Blizzard allows use of DBM, doesn’t prove that DBM isn’t cheating.
In fact, it is cheating in many ways, but it’s cheating permitted by Blizzard.

Cheating by definition, involves breaking rules.

DBM currently breaks no rules, only egos.

You talking about addons? Real players can play without keyboard and mouse

What about people who look up quests and guides on the internet?
Should they be banned too?
They could not figure it out on their own by the information in the game and used a 3rd party website to tell them how to do it.

If you think the top players would be most affected by this you are wrong.
They have the resources and means to do this without the ingame addons because they will just have a backseat raid leader which they sometimes already have telling them what and when to do it and they have so many pulls on these bosses that they will know the majority of mechanics in and out.
They are the ones that make the guides even.

I have DBM but it is mostly for pugs. When there is a raid leader I do not even need to think about it and after a few clears I do not even notice it because I already know the mechanics and timings simply by tracking my own cooldowns and observing the situation.

These types of addons are mostly helping regular players that either play solo or have lower skill-level but want to step into higher content and need some help to get started.
For the top players they would still be the top players with or without it.

Sorry but no, that addon was banned because blizzard decided it was unhealthy for the game as a whole. If something is considered cheating has only to do with the rules of the game, which is the ToS.

Cheating is defined as anything that goes against ToS. If your argument is that it feels unfair to you, then that is another thing altogether.

By definition since blizzard is allowing it through ToS, it is NOT cheating.

Your analogy is all over the place.
In your analogy, IF a country did not have any rules against stealing, then stealing WOULD be legal, even if you did not condone the act.

And here is the problem in your argument. You take by default that DBM = Cheating without proving WHY it is cheating.

All DBM does is: Take PUBLIC information that a player INPUTED in an addon (fight timers, mob energy, and so on) and display it in your screen.
Is anything of the below cheating:

  • A timer/clock next to your desk

  • A post it note with notes on ability timers

  • Someone you gave that post it note to remind you when/something is happening.

If your point is that, when I make a post it note with the ability timers and give that post it note with a stopwatch to my girlfriend to remind me of certain abilities, then we have a REALLY different idea of what cheating is.

Same thing with most other addons.
Weak auras/Elvui personalize your display mainly with how/what is shown.
OmniCC gives you feedback on when an ally used an ability that you could track anyway.

Every addon with some exceptions displays information we already have from blizzard, the only thing that changes is that we do not have to fight over a subpar ui that is unusable in its base form for high end.

Blizzard has decided long ago that is is OK to be able to customize your display with information that is known to you through blizzard ui. It made the right choice so that it could focus on more important things.

And as a last note, there ARE addons that were banned by blizzard. Many times blizzard saw something and went ahead and said “nope, that is too far, we cannot allow that”.
Those times were:

  • When an addon was able to display custom textures over terrain, blizzard said that no, addons should not be able to telegraph that information (visual representation of range/shape of abilities)

  • When players found a way to zoom out the camera really far back, outside of what was possible with default UI, blizzard did not like what advantage that gave, and removed the option. (Yes this is the EXACT same thing that players in FFXIV are banned over atm)

So yeah, regarding addons that are used for many years now. No, blizzard will not, neither should ban them, since they only make the game better.
Only way is for blizzard to make their own equivalent or better tools in game, so that the end result would be a straight up upgrade for players.

And you need the build the bike yourself, from iron you have mined… same for the generator ofc.

Technically speaking: if you ban all world first players for using 3rd party software, ban 99,99% of all players for using 3rd party software.

I mean… even those who don’t use Addons, ban those pesky discord/TS3 users too… they could use ingame VC and yet they improve their gaming experience with a 3rd party programm.

You may also only hire people who you personally brought into your bloodline to work the mine.

Yes it does have, but if I’m not mistaken the creator of FFXIV posted publicly that he wont consider people who clear raid first - as world first if they used any tool. Happened like a week ago , didn’t really follow that drama.

Its not cheating. Your arguments are void. End of discussion.

Create a mechanic or a series of mechanics where you know that it will come and when but you have no tools / assistance that will tell you anything in regards to how to solve it.

→ remove the ability to mark players automatically in combat.
→ raid markers can only be set out of combat.

In a raid size of 20 people things will get interesting real fast…
