World of Warcraft game director details which combat add-ons are safe and which will be eliminated in the coming purge

I hate how this news frames addons or their creators as something to fight against. They’re the ones who make the game playable and accessible for so many people. If they suddenly decided to stop supporting their addons, the game would become unplayable for a large portion of the player base ,game would practically go into hiatus.

If we no longer have to rely on a WA to be able to complete a fight it will be a vast improvement. So sick of fights being impossible without some addon dissecting the information and coordinating your group.

This, so much. Fights have got more and more complicated with each expansion since at least WotLK because devs had to play cat and mouse with pro players using addons warning them about every little mechanic minutes ahead.

Casuals like me who just want to play the game as it is and react to what is actually happening on the screen suffered due to that. I hope they can prevent and reverse this trend in the future.

Not requiring huge WA packs will also improve my game performance no end. So much stuff loads up in the background.

That is crazy, never thought that would happen.
But returning to wow after a 10-year long break and seeing players have addons today that tell them to watch out for the fire or to pop a certain ability was completely insane to me.
Doesn’t that trivialize the difficult content of this game?

For them, yes - and then they complain about fights getting “too easy” while those not wanting to stare at timers instead of what’s actually happening get overwhelmed by tons of mechanics on the same bosses.

It meant they put in more and more complex mechanics/fights. So far from making things trivial it made everything more complicated.

Is that really true?
Or is it just something people say to make themselves feel better?
I’ve heard talk about it before but I’ve never actually seen proof of Blizzard implementing a mechanic in a certain way just because they know for a fact that players will use an addon for it.

Did you read the interview?

How many mythic raid fights have you done?

Because anyone who has actually taken part in the WA requiring boss fights knows how this works and how it’s been for sometime.

They had to come up with personal auras just to avoid addons from tracking debuffs on every raid member and stuff.

I haven’t gotten far enough into raiding yet that I’ve had the chance to try out mythic raiding, no.
But I’ve been around for a long time now, even since the earliest raids of World of Warcraft.
I’ve killed Zek’vir on hard mode, and I have completed Mage Tower challenges, I believe mythic difficulties are designed in a similar way to those things.
I regularly watch top guilds do mythic raiding though, been doing that for a while now.
So no, sorry, I don’t believe that a Blizzard employee will design a boss fight HOPING that some 24-year old kid is sitting in his basement somewhere designing an addon that players will have to use to complete the fight.
To me, it makes way more sense to just design a boss fight that is very hard but if a player is skilled with addons, the fight becomes easier.

Zekvir and the Mage Tower are solo challenges. They don’t compare to the complexity they’ve added to mythic raid fights.

RWF teams even employ WA experts to write stuff for them because the fights have been made more and more complex to keep up with addons.

But if you want to kid yourself that it’s just being trivialised by addons then be my guest. Nothing will convince you otherwise. I for one welcome not needing a WAs in this way going forward.

I miss Enemy Grid… was an amazing addon for DoT users.

glad they’re going after the combat addons

Blizzard has actively stated that they choose to adjust the difficulty to the game based on the third party tools players have accessible so you could argue that addons are the reasons the game isn’t accessible without them in the first place.

I think however that if some players see this as a reason to decry addon creators as ‘the enemy’, then those individual players are goofy and they will not be the largest voice

For RP it is absolutely neccesary to have them tho, if only to recognize what other players are also RPers

Oh I don’t think I quite get it, I’ll have to try mythic for myself someday then come back.
I’ve always thought people meant that Blizzard is designing harder raids because players use addons, but it seems like they are in fact designing harder raids BECAUSE of addons.

I might not be native english but this sounds exactly the same to me.
