World of Warcraft was unable to start up 3d acceleration

Hello,

as mentioned in the title I’m getting this error since the pre-patch update when using Directx12.
When I am at the character selection screen, sometimes the game will freeze for a few seconds, and then continue working for a while, then freeze again for a few seconds… until eventually it crashes and give me that error.
The same happens if I play with any character anywhere in the world.

I would like to mention that before the patch, everything was working fine on patch 8.3 but it was crashing the same way when I was playing on the PTR server (which already had the pre-patch update).

Regardless I’ve been trying multiple things to try to fix the issue in case that is on my side:

  1. Cleaning graphics drivers with Display Driver Uninstaller in Safe Mode and reinstalling from fresh.
  2. Disabling every overlay.
  3. Closing any other program running in the background.
  4. Reinstalling the game and playing without any addons.
  5. Checking temperatures (I’m always monitoring this, they are fine).
  6. Disabling any overclock.
  7. Ensuring that Windows and all drivers are up to date.
  8. Set up Nvidia Control Panel to “Prefer maximum performance” mode.
  9. Disable G-SYNC.
  10. Disabling Vsync
  11. Disabling MSAA

PC Specs:
CPU - i7 8700k
GPU - RTX 2080
RAM - 16GB
MOBO - Asus Maximus X Hero

Extra information that might help:
Main monitor - 1440p@144hz connected to the RTX 2080 (wow running on this one)
Secondary monitor - 4k@60hz connected to the iGPU (intel HD 630).

Launching the game using Directx11 Legacy allows me to play wtihout any issues and is rock solid stable, but comes with a big performance hit.

I’ve been trying to troubleshoot the issue and try solutions from previous post about this that I found searching on google, but no luck so far.

I wonder if there is something else that I could try and didn’t game to my mind or is just a game issue and I should wait for an update (I’m aware there have been changes to the engine with the shadowlands pre-patch).

I tried to link here a pastebin with the content of my gx.log after crashing but the forums doesn’t allow me to post links so here it goes:

Have you moved any of the leads recently? are you sure the monitor cable is plugged into the RTX graphics card (lower down on the back of the case) and not into the intel graphics ( up near the USB and network sockets)

Yeah, nothing has changed physically compared to before pre-patch, performance on the iGPU would be abyssmal and easily noticeable. Performance is good while running, is just crashing after 5 mins or so. You can even see the proper GPU being detected in the logs:

10/17 16:42:47.233 Choosing gpu with monitor attached: “NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080”

do you have corsair ICUE or razer synapse installed? i have this exact problem on a 5700XT and it looks like those are the culprits

I do have Razer Synapse since I have a Viper Ultimate, I’m gonna try out.
Thanks for the idea!

PD: Unfortunately I crashed again after 10 mins or so, but it was a good idea, maybe it helps someone else.

also out of interest have you tried disabling the secondary monitor? ive done that with mine and it seems a hell of a lot more stable. give it a go?

Just tried that, completely unplugged the 2nd monitor. At first it seemed good and I was able to do the halloween dungeon and stay in orgrimmar for around 20 mins. But in the end it crashed too.

I think at this point I will give up and wait for a fix or driver update, this issue only occurs after the Shadowlands engine update with the exact same hardware and software as before.

Actually, when it was on the PTR I was able to play BFA for hours on DX12 but I was crashing the same way I do now when I was on the PTR (testing the pre-patch). So hopefully a future patch or driver update will fix it.

Regardless, thank you for the help, those were good ideas worth giving a shot.
