WoW 2 and Unreal Engine 5

Hello!

So lately I have been watching on YouTube about the videos of Project Grunt (Axcel) of reworking WoW in Unreal Engine 5.

I just wanted to say, or warn Blizzard that this maybe upcoming approach of making WoW 2 will be fatal to the game due to it ruining the gameplay that is great now in-game, or has been like that so many years that players have got used to.

You have to think graphical overhaul taking first focus into gameplay and lore. Then we can talk about graphical update first if the gameplay is good. Lore you already got it.

Other wise you will just see the game dying to angry players, who got used to something old as almost 20 years old. Something we used to play for 17 years will suddenly get total graphic update and that way gameplay will get ruined.

For example the great comparison is from Quake actually, where they revamped graphics from Quake 3 to Quake 4 and the scene completely died there. The gameplay got completely changed there that players did not like.

So personally I dont want this to happen again. We have so far seen New World being just a graphical showcase, but did not show anything new to gaming or gameplay-wise. Then we will have Ashes of Creation that is going to be same graphical showcase with bad gameplay and no content to play. WoW currently has the gameplay and the content to play.

However with graphical update the WoW 2 will be so many gigabytes of space that we cant really afford as players these days. It will most likely need cloud gaming that will also ruin gameplay.

Just something that has been in my mind these days! I just think that the current way Blizzard does graphical update is great with slowly recoloring transmogs and towns, adding new weather effects and stuff like that. It should be just fastened all that “rework” with current engine.

Hope all the best for the game! Sincerely yours someone playing the game since the Day 1 of Vanilla.

People who genuinely believe WoW 2 will ever come out are so high on hopium or whatever it’s unbelievable. The amount of time it would take to remake the entire game on a new engine is absolutely astounding and in no way, shape or form worth the time or the monetary investment.

Also the graphical style WoW has is perfect since it’s ageless. Sure there are differences between vanilla zones and the current ones but they’re all still extremely recognizable. Every game that strives to have a realistic graphic style ends up looking extremely dated as a couple of years pass and new games with such graphic styles come out.

I highly doubt Blizzard is working on a WoW 2, they just don’t have to. That is not to say that the engine doesn’t need to get optimized. But since I’m quite a dummy in that area I have no idea if thats even possible or if a new engine is required for that to happen.

So this is based on speculation that WoW 2 will ever be a thing? I dont think it will, but I’m with you. I wouldn’t want the graphics to change. On the other hand, if they did change, my girlfriend would probably play because she plays new world for the graphics.

So I guess it would bring a whole bunch of new players to the game, and if it had everything we have now, I’m sure people would still play it
but yeah, I like todays graphics.

Its never going to happen.

How to get WoW 2 in 3 “easy” steps:

  1. Game textures overhaul by an AI, upscaling them to current standards and beyond ofc.
  2. Change the UI to provide more info at a baseline, would also help newer players.
  3. Revamp the classes
but not fully revamp! Actually put thought into rotations/priority and get rid of useless spells and put some new awesome ones in.

That is all that’s needed imho.

P.S. I think that’s what they’ll attempt with the new expansion 10.0 that we’re gonna get, to give it a fresh look.

I think what you guys really mean when you say don’t change the graphics is don’t change the art style.

If this is what you do mean then I totally agree, WoWs style an palette is so iconic you couldn’t change that.
However if it’s just graphical fidelity and engine modernisation, then I would love to see that.

The GPU requirements to run Unreal v5 would finish the game altogether for me, I just could not afford today’s inflated prices.

You never gonna get it.

you need to stop grasping onto the past and let things progress

its people like you which is why classic exists

Wat. Quake 4 was practically not even Quake; they had sold the rights to the name to Raven if I recall correctly; it was practically a reskin at best.

id Software in general was dead after Carmack stopped dealing with it personally.

quake 3 arena was best imo
and still a great game today

quake 4 just didnt feel the same.

quake 3 arena was actually the first ever online multiplayer game i played.

Don’t even consider 4 to be a quake game. They had sold the rights to the game-name to someone else.

id Software in general is not id Software anymore once Carmack stopped dealing with it personally.

last one i tried to play was Quake wars
 and it was awful

i used to play a lot of team fortress classic back in the day the precursor to TF2

and that originally started as a quake mod called ‘quake team fortress’

Personally I do not believe blizzard would ever use unreal engine period.
Simple reason being is that they would have to give a % of everything they earn from any game made using it to Epic.

that would be blizzard loss imo
personal greed stops building a game which could last them potentially another 20 years.

lets wait and see what this new survival game is all about
apparently been in the works for 5 years
that will give a good inclination to the future of blizzard products and the engine they work with.

i just have a bad taste in my mouth that this is the battle royale game which was teased to be starting production as many years ago

if it is im not holding high hopes for it.

will be another competitive focused esports crap show
 if that is the case.

it might be what blizzard are now tbh
we all know old blizzard does not exist anymore 2004 wow blizzard that is.

i wont judge just yet until there is at least some footage out of it
burned too many times to be even mildly excited though.

i dont even have no interest in diablo 4
 which is pretty big really
that is the negative impact modern blizzard has had on me in recent years.

Engine as the word implies is under the hood and not the bodywork.
Engine does not impose the art style of a game.
Engine by default does not impose hardware requirements, it can be used to create demanding game but it is not mandatory in any shape or form.

Both groups of advocates who are for and against wow2 are completely wrong in their statements.

No, you are not a dummy there. The engine needs at best a rework, minimum a Modification.

Even Bungie modified their Tiger III Engine they have been using since Halo 3 for Destiny 2 Beyond Light to do more cool stuff ingame.
