They have backups, they said before Classic that they’d perminently deleted the old game files so classic servers would never be possible and yet here we are.
As a network manager I know the importance of backups. The files they claim to have perminently deleted would be worth so much money, there’s no way they would have perminently deleted every copy of them. Disk space is cheap and the text files that store character data is tiny.
My guess is they’ll wait until the next lauch of a classic server and then magically be able to renew everyone’s clones so they get another false subscription/player spike at launch when people renew to clone again. This is what they did at WotLK classic launch, they announced that they were going to be stopping clones so that thousands of people would renew their subs just to clone before the service stopped.
This is the only reason why they disabled the service in the first place, for the false player spike. I just wish i’d known about it.
They did not delete the old game files, how many times do I have to say this? The changed them so much over the years that they didn’t resemble the Vanilla server files anymore. The client side is on just about every Vanilla 2005 disk that exists.
Anyway this 2019 Classic is based on LEGION server technology, and if you and any of the other “people” had bothered to READ ALL THE POSTS HERE you should see I have said it before.

Surely someone with enough intelligence to do your job could learn to spell permanently correctly? Or are you just ignoring those red lines under the text?
Edit: One more thing the data isn’t “gone” it’s on the Wrath realms now so they do not need to back it up.
Opinion and common sense is all that we have to go on here anyway. In the worst case, writing a small script to convert some save games is only a afternoons work anyway. In this day and age we have near perfect emulation of probably 100s over different hardware and software plattforms. Classic was reconstructed after blizz said it could not be done. People reverse engineered diablo 1 without source code etc. Stop pretending its hard to convert some data files or some herculean technical task to provide these charaters, wheter they do it via cold backup or or data transformation. Its gonna come down to demand.
No it isn’t, we have Blizzard saying directly that the data is gone and so is the service. That is not opinion, that is a direct statement saying it no longer exists.
They could, if they wanted take the data back from Wrath and put it on Era for characters that have never logged in but if the did current versions that have logged in then that is hugely unfair to those who cloned when it was available as the character would be far more advanced than theirs was 2 years ago. And some gear/spec options would not be compatible.
They can change their mind and say the opposite thing as well, based on demand. You know, kinda what they did with classic in the first place. Not a big problem to convert the data, and not unfair, there are t3 and rank 14 characters on the realms already, nothing can top that. Only unfair thing is having to make new charaters when other people get to play their old ones.
Funny as some people like to invent statements which Blizzard never said.
They said they didn’t have a complete codebase they could check out with all client and server code, server scripts etc., so instead of fetching the original code and make it work, they based it on Legion (?) code instead. But they had the original code all the time.
But clones are deleted, and maybe they could re-create something from a backup. But the cost would be huge, so why bother for 10 people being 2 years late whining on forums?
No, they cannot. It’s permanently gone, not backed up.

If people didn’t choose back then and now want to jump on the bandwagon then it is unfair to the people already playing Era.
Era is not the natural location for your character to end up if you played the original 2019 Classic. People didn’t choose for many reasons but the main one was theat they thought it was dead.

It’s gone, either start a new character or play something else. You are not getting the clone service back.
That is just something Blizzard say to get rid of you in a ticket, my god, did you actually READ the picture there? They do not say posting on the forums will bring it back, it’s to tell other players what you want. No developers read the EU forums, ever.
if you think you can definitively say that, I guess that means you must be the chairman of the board or maybe some kind majority shareholder or over at Blizzard. Just give it a rest we all know that isnt the case.
You and the others will not accept the fact I am right and the first way mentioned in that reddit post is an INGAME SUGGESTION, go make some to try and get it back.

If you wait for the service to come back you will be waiting for a long, long time, in fact even after the servers are shut down you will still be waiting.

You’re probably right, I just hope you’re wrong. I didn’t come on the forums to argue with anyone, i’m just really gutted and have to hold out hope, no matter how small, that I might one day get my character back. Enjoy your evening.
