What's up with Blizzard wasting characters? (SPOILER)

Personally the entire expansion (*note Battle for Azeroth) feels like a filler addon solely created with the explicit purpose to deal with all the old world problems. How well this was executed is up to debate of course but generally?

The faction conflict has been mostly resolved. Horde and Alliance finally decided to break the cycle of hatred…at least that was Blizzards intention. Sylvanas, the most problematic leader of the Horde when it comes to peace, was ousted from the Horde. Genn was somewhat defanged. Tyrande is the obvious exception of course, but Shandris is already build up as a potential replacement.

Aszhara, one of the last big names of the old lore along with characters like the Lich King and Deathwing, got defeated in her own palace. Her elite forces have been killed, the best of her naga have been crushed.

N’zoth is up next. With him dying the Old Gods will be done for. Even if one of them rises up again, they will never be as powerful as before.

With all of these out of the way Azeroth has become more or less peaceful. All big bads have been crushed, all problems have been resolved, all the old lore was finished up. As such Blizzard can now go every direction they want without the old “burden”.

“Shadowlands” is essentially the first true new expansion since “Mists of Pandaria”. It’s a completely new world/dimension and the Shadowlands do not have any large previously established lore only short and small notes here and there. It’s the first expansion without any old burden attached to it. Sure, we have Sylvanas but she has no longer any connection to the Alliance, the Horde or the players and has become (more or less) just another bad guy similar to Kil’jaeden, who was also important in the lore but in the end he was just another bad guy.
