WoW runs very bad on my PC

WoW runs very bad on my desktop PC
On lowest settings runs equivalent to my friend’s 7 year old laptop. I have about 50 FPS in Dorn and like 12 FPS in the middle of battle in Epic BGs.
Processor: AMD Ryzen 5 4500 6-Core Processor (12 CPUs), ~3.6GHz
Memory: 32768MB RAM
Monitor Id: SAM707A
Native Mode: 2560 x 1440(p) (144.000Hz)
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 Ti
Motherboard BaseBoard Product:A520M-A PRO (MS-7C96)

Reinstalled windows, installed all drivers, up to date for GPU. Tried every settings possible online with no avail.

Do you run a lot of addons?
Some combat addons can lower your fps, especially if they have high response rate. So lower the update rate on things like details etc.
advanced combat logging in settings also use a bunch of resources.

I also recommend this video for graphic settings.

I got ryzen 5600x and 3060 ti. Both of our problem is the old cpu. I’m building new because of it.

same , it started with tww undermine patch for me… load screens have been horrible , dawnbreaker has minimun 40 sec load screen and usually 50 to a minute

The 4500 is only 3 years old.
But it is basically a 3600 which is 6 years old.

Looking into it I think the biggest problem is that the 4500 only have 8MB L3 Cache instead of the 32 of the 3600.
I had a 3600 before upgrading to 5700x3d, WoW ran fine on 3600 so I think the low cache is the issue.

So OP I’d recommend upgrading the cpu if you can. 5700x3d is probably the best you can get for AM4 at the moment because I don’t think there are any 5800x3d left on the market, but check second hand if you can find one for cheap.

But its not good thats a 60 euro cpu, 5 years older 5600x is 30-40% faster give or take and its still not good enough anymore. Our cpu are not really good, mine is budget that is about to get very old in next 1-2 years and thats newer but slower. They are “old” processors, I dont mean the actual age I mean they are outdated. I would start planning building next rig. We are not in too big hurry yet, can have working pc and can play on 50fps. Look for parts and order what need, theres time.

The AMD 4000 series were terrible CPUs and likely AMD just getting rid of older less performing chips for cheap.

This is most likely your issue.

Many small system builders use low end chips like these to try and increase their profit margin.

Yeah it true, its not good, but its not because it’s old, its because its a defective apu sold as a regular cpu for a discounted price.
zen2 is still a good cheap cpu that does fine in WoW, the problem is the 4000 dont have the cache to be a gaming cpu. luckily am4 have upgrade options for very cheap second hand.

Yeah I meant its “outdated”. It sucks I know, nobody wants to hear their build is getting old, I’m on same boat. Macgyver could probably build faster processor than ours by connecting potato to an battery with an paperclip

enabled XMP in bios in a profile and Global c state disabled > I see an improvement of like 8 FPS, did those steps from chatgpt, hope its safe.

WoW is just badly optimised and usually CPU limited in busy places. My CPU doesn’t even hit 20% and I still don’t get 60 FPS in Dornogal. My GPU isn’t bottlenecking either. The only thing that does seem to make an impact is RAM speed for me.

wow is a very CPU heavy game, get a 9800x3D and it will run very smooth

My CPU doesn’t even get over 20% and it still runs crap in busy places. WoW just isn’t properly utilising multi-cores.

Dorn gives me FPS issues and I have a NASA PC. And it’s pretty normal to have bad FPS in epic BGs when things get busy. You can also change your settings specifically for raids and BGs in the settings.

You shouldn’t really be having major issues though, regardless of your rig being a tad dated.

I am running the game on a Ryzen 5 1500X which is even older that yours but I have better performance. Which means it’s either a general system problem, or a game settings issue. Check the following:

  • Windows Power Options: Is the profile set to High Performance or AMD Recommended? Because if you use Balanced or Energy Saving, the CPU gets underclocked even under stress
  • Windows Control Panel → System → Display → Graphics Settings: Add WoW.exe and set it to High Performance and select your discreet gfx card
  • Try disabling fake frame generation from the nVidia control panel, for some reason it doesn’t work well with WoW. Also set a framerate cap instead of leaving it uncapped, even if you don’t reach it.

The game has run bad since DF honestly. Optimization is getting worse.

They keep adding graphic fidelity to an ancient engine. At some point hardware will need to bruteforce it. And old engines aren’t really all that multithreading capable. Even if the API technically supports multithreading, if the code relies on single threading everything, you’ll still wind up using mainly one or maybe two cores.
Unless they find a way to either completely rebuild the engine or switch to a new one, it’s probably only going to get worse.

It’s safe, don’t worry.

Try downloading MSI Afterburner and overclock your fans/GPU as well. Might give you some more FPS.

Also overclock in BIOS by doing the setup wizard.

There is also a bug in the game if you use resolution scaling, anything below 100% can give you lower FPS if you are using that option.

Call me the devils advocate here, but oh no. You have to wait a minute before playing a game… :ok_man:

Considering in 2008 it even used to be 3x the time for some big games, waiting 40 seconds isn’t that bad. You can check your phone for messages in that time or grab something to drink.

Only enable XMP if ALL of your memory modules are identical down to their smallest details, even production date! NEVER enable it if your modules are not all identical! I learned it the hard way.
