If say im lvl 30 and i tag a lvl 40 elite vut someone else does the dps to kill it… do i get the full xp for it?
No.
First of all what Exp you get is dependent on the %-Dmg you have done (wont be much in this case). And the next thing is - there is a chart what determine how much exp you get for Mobs higher or lower than your lvl. In Both cases of a big lvl difference you get less exp.
Correct me if am wrong cause this is how i think it is - no actual proof or backup.
How does this interact with parties? I’ve noticed my party members get less xp than me sometimes. Our healer is the farthest behind in xp(mainly because of deaths and healer aggro and her being slow to react).
If you let NPCs do most of the damage, you don’t even get to loot the corpse.
What happens if you tag the mob amd someone else kills it but you heal the person dpsing it… sounds a but unfair getting nothing
No.

…how is that unfair if you let other people do most of the work? just sounds like you are deadlocked on cheesing it with a higher level friend.
Thats only half true… Lets say im not in party, i tag mob, and war at same lvl as me charge him, agro him and kill him, is just stand there, did 20dmg with rank 1 lightning bolt, war did 99%, i get full xp and full loot, if i tag mob on lvl 20, and some lvl 60 kills it i get 10 or 15% of xp gain, im not sire what exactly happes when i tsg higher lvl, lets say im 20, i tag 35 mob, and some level 35 kills it… No idea, but there for sure is some cut in xp when mob is much higher than you, dont know how much it is…
In Vanilla you were penalized for grouping. Thus you get less than the full amount, because it’s easier with more people. The more people help, the less exp you get.
Yes that is a given. I am talking about why not all party members receive the same amount of xp.
You’re all wrong though. You are able to boost people by not being in party and killing their mob after they tagged it. The one tagging it gets full exp. This was changed in future patches.
Quite sure it was WoD or Legion that changed it to work that way, before that you could tag level. I used to help friends with their alts on this spot during MoP:

They would tag the mobs and I would kill them. Haven’t tested which it is in Classic, but since it’s build on 7.3.5 client it possibly could be damage % based. It shouldn’t be that way though.
This is correct. The current implementation is NOT the correct behaviour. You used to get the full amount of experience and this was the case all the way into Wrath of the Lich King.
since beta The system was in place were u would get less xp if some one did dmg on your mob out of group.
I know that you get the XP if you tag and someone else kills it. I did it today with a moonstalker. I ran and did a small amount of damage to a mob, it ran back to another guy who hit it after me and I got the XP for it 20 seconds later.
In some point of vanilla I know max levels helped lowbies to dungeon level, it has been nerfed a few times since. Which is pity. As a lot of more people and alts would be in-game.
As a healer & tank i can say you get nothing from healing a target dpsing, except for good karma & a Ty ofc
Yep. I would dual window boost through dungeons in tbc.
Leave low lvl at start of the dungeon, pull a lot with high lvl to a dungeon start without damaging, leave party, frost nova or grenade to tag them with a low level, aoe mobs down with a high level. I used priest as high level, as holy nova does the job well, and i can heal low level if things go south. It got changed at some point later.
Indeed. Just noticed this on The Hinterlands oozes. Normal xp I get from them is 270-300xp. This one 60lvl warlock started helping me to kill them and I got 70-100xp only from the kills. So it is indeed damage % based in classic.
I think you have xp bonus for having full party, so it is always better to have full party, then having just 2-4 people.
K correction you get xp bonus
1 person group = 1.0
2 person group = 1.0
3 person group = 1.166
4 person group = 1.3
5 person group = 1.4
divided by player count ofc.
