I saw an interview ages ago (don’t ask me to find it at this time of day, maybe tomorrow) where Metzen was recounting how he was having a conversation with Golden, and she was really pushing for Anduin. It’s whichever one he gets taken hostage in Ironforge.
In the same vein apparently Golden really pushed for Calia to have the role she currently has (or is obviously being groomed for) when the Devs wanted to just make a new character, so if Anduin’s trajectory is anything to to by, hold on to your butts for Calia “It’s Just Calia Now” Menethil, queen of the Forsaken!

Now there’s a character I actively despise; Calia Menethil. Along with Anduin “Holybones” Wrynn, Jaina “oh god, not another story arc” Proudmoore, Baine “I’m incompetent” Bloodhoof and the 2 alliance alligned Windrunner sisters.
As for likes? I love Arthas as the Lich King, Kel’thuzad is cool, Tyrande’s grown on me since sticking it to Anduin, Thalyssra.
I’ve never liked Sylvanas, but there are worst characters out there and i’m just tired of her.

My only issue with Thalyssra is now that all her plothooks are gunna be latched onto Lor’themar, starving both races of actual lore. Judging by the new book Blizzard are really shipping it.
Best:
Zul’jin, because he was the first troll who had enough strenght to get their forces up and pile them up together to fight their enemies. Wish they would have shown more of his cunning in game. Also I wish player characters could have an amazing long scarf like him.
Vol’jin, I read up on how he is portrayed in the different books and such. Great and strong person. In game that is not shown at all, a real shame. Like for example not many know who the human is on his funeral while it’s being a very important and defining part of his story.
Worst:
Jaina, the whole trope of “BUT HOOMAN POTENTIAL” is defining in that character. Yes, I get it. She had a relationship with Arthas, then with a dragon. Ok, she is a super powerful mage who exceeds the likes of 10k year old draenei and elves. She was also the apprentice of some real big boi mage, was essential in most lore moments starting up from WC3 and is the “aunt” (?) of Anduin. All of it while only being 30. She is also the only survivor of Theramore, which did not scare her body in any way but gave her some amazing looking haircolor. Good lord.
Sylvanas, just for one reason. Plot armor. Nothing makes a character more miserable for me when all actions are excused by “plot armor”. Of course she has a deal with the jailor, of course valkyrs took their place in hell when she was killed twice, of course she can just 1 shot the Lich King and of course she was never revealed by any source to have evil intentions.
Nathanos, I get it. He’s a self insert. Couldn’t the guy writing him make him atleast a different race than human? Because even when he was still a human he was similar to Jaina. A giant slowfake.
How dare you? She’s great.

- Budd from Vashj’ir Intro quest and all the civilians on that boat they funny as hell
- Edwin Vancleef and Vanessa Vancleef ( These two have a perfect reason for what they did, was unfortunate that Westfall had to suffer)
- Reese Langstone from Pig and Whistle (no longer there though, why?)
- Hope Saldean (She feeds the homeless, only one that does, only one that cares)
- Saldean’s in Westfall (Good natured people that cares, please make them the leaders of Westfall.
- Liam Greymane, Prince of Gilneas ( This guy stood up and fought to the end for his people)
- Every Milita Westfall member except for Gryan ( They didn’t leave Westfall while it was crumbling to dust, they stood and fight against Defias)
- The hoboair in Westfall, he managed to somehow tame a gryphon to let people fly
- Queen Mia Greymane (Continued being brave as hell if you read about her)

- Anduin Wrynn (Let’s Genn stomp over him)
- Varian Wrynn (Sacrificed himself for nothing, except a few soldiers and Genn?)

It’s sadly unsurprising that more than half of my least favourite characters were ones I liked before Battle for Azeroth.
Jaina returning back to square one, going back to being pro-peace because “We’ve changed…” was God-awful and only served to undo the arc of gunning for peace, only to have it literally blown up in her face.
Saurfang had previously occupied the unique position of being an old man in a culture that usually dies young, who’d experienced an enormous amount of loss both personally and culturally, and got reduced to grunting about his/the Horde’s honour for a meme character to make doe eyes at.
Magni had previously been a flawed, conservatively-minded individual for whom the knowledge of his responsibility weighed heavily. After Cataclysm, he’s basically just a meme. It’s a bit sad.
Khadgar for being a God-awful meme character as the bulk of my memory of him, as well.
For favourites… Muradin Bronzebeard, and Moira Thaurissan. It’s probably for the better that they’re largely ignored by Blizzard, but I like the fact Moira had a legitimate arc, and Muradin’s speech in Icecrown Citadel about his regrets for not having been able to help Arthas has always stuck with me.

This took me ages to even decide because it turns out I don’t really like a lot of Warcraft characters enough to consider them a favourite
P.S. - Nathanos is an honourable mention in favourites because I do kind of like him (though his shoehorned love for Sylvanas irks me a little and I don’t think it’s necessary) and he really pisses everybody off so that makes me like him a lot more
