I installed it to see how bad it is:
Data usage of Overwolf without updating a single addon. Just install, start and close:

I will go more in-depth when I update addons in a fewdays. I will run a network analyzer to see what it is exactly up & downloading.
The app itself looks pretty much like the twitch app in another design:

When you close it asks you what you want to do exactly:

And my process list before and after was exacly the same so I donāt think it runs when you tell it to stop running. At least not in a way that I can see.
Attention: it does install the Overwolf Appstore and thereās no opt-out
Overwatch? Are you sure itās not the Overwolf App Store?
Fixed it
Does the Overwolf app still work if you block advertising via something like a hosts file? The Twitch app occasionally broke for me a couple of times because of that.
You are a beautiful guinea pig
I donāt think I can test this because thereās currently no ads loaded. However, I am running a pi-hole (https://pi-hole.net/) and it doesnāt seem to break the application.
Iām still happy with Wowup - lightweight & ad-free. The latter means you get a warning when you open it because they canāt afford a certificate. I prefer it that way.
Iāve taken the plunge and am testing Overwolf/Curseforge app.
As always Iāve gone through the settings with a fine toothcomb to opt out of every auto start up/run in background/overlay, customised ads etc etc option in both Overwolf and their Curseforge App.
My biggest concern was that it would run in the background after closing but so far that doesnāt seem to be an issue.
Let us know how you get on because the rumours of Overwolf is a cause for concern so I donāt want to be using methods thatāll make things worse.
see how it goes after a few games. my laptop started to crash more than once within a day. now i donĀ“t crash at all.
I think some of the concerns are genuine but others seem a little far fetched.
This and the fact that Iāll be bombarded with ads means Iāll never touch the new app. Iād rather get my addons manually outside of curseforge or stop using them completely if the alternative apps stop working. And before someone tells me I can block the ads or pay to remove them; I shouldnāt have to do either of those things so I choose not to install anything related to Overwolf on my PC.
There are quite a lot of alternatives atm
If addon creators do not make exclusivity deals with overwolf, I willl take alternatives over intrusive wolf every time.
With the amount of Patreon donations that have been pledged recently, 2.0 will have a certificate.
For WowUp; if you want to try it, pick the 2.0-beta. At this point itās running better and has less issue than 1.x
I started using Ajour a little while ago after mmo-champion shared some previews of alternative clients. I like it. It does what I need it to do and it doesnāt take time to load up like twitch does which is nice.
I started using Overwolf as soon as I heard about the change. So about a month now. At no point in that time have I had any crashes. At no point have I even noticed that I have it installed except that I can open the CurseForge App and update my add-ons.
Given that nearly every mod out there is on Curseforge and that Overwolf now owns it that makes it the most sensible choice of updater.
I will also add that in the Overwolf control panel you can:
- Not load it on startup.
- Remove ad personalization and Data feedback
- Remove performance and stability data collection
- Request a copy of the personal data they hold on you
- Request a permanent deletion of your data and account
Overall Iād rate it as better and less intrusive than Twitch (or Facebook or having a Google account) with more control over your privacy than the competition.
Honestly Razor Synapse, Razor Chroma, Steel Series drivers, RaiderIO, Microsoft Gaming Services, Steamā¦ all of those are far above Overwolf on my list of concern when it comes to using up CPU/GPU cycles and how they handle my data.
Update Edit: I note that WowUp scrapes TukUI amongst other sources so Iāll be switching to it so I donāt have to download ElvUI manually ever again. The security warning is pretty standard for tiny app developers and shouldnāt concern or worry you.
I moved to WoWUP last night. You can also download the source code from their GitHub repository and customise it if you know how. Itās basic and does all I need.

First thing I did when I installed was check the Overwolf and Curseforge App settings to say nope to a whole load of things and make sure when I close it, it actually closes and doesnāt run in background.
Iāve only started today but will see how it goes.
