I’m unable to log into my character since Dreadnaught crashed last night and I keep getting the same error message “A character with that name already exists”.
Character name is Mikelindell, server is Dreadnaught (classic SoM).

Bunch of us with the same problem on DN,right after the crash.We are prolly stuck inbetween some layers.
I can’t even delete the character and try to restore it, “deletion failed” it says.
yeah cause the character is “Online”
Just restart your machine and try again.

We’re aware of this issue and an investigation is already underway. No specifics or ETA just yet, but we’ll let you know as soon as we have an update!
In the meantime, could I please ask anyone currently affected by this to try the stuck character self-service option linked from this page and let me know how that goes:
Should that fail, don’t hesitate to make a ticket and a Game Master should be able to help get the char back in action.

Doesn’t work for me,a got a response for my ticket from a GM,saying my char is moved to a safe place and can login now,but that’s just not true,still dead-“online” and cannot log in.I honestly gave up the idea of playing by now,i’m just curious to see if this will ever get fixed lol.
I tried this suggestion, and I got,

We could not complete your request. Please try again or submit a support ticket if the problem persists.’
Pretty sure there’s a cooldown for this as well so I wouldn’t be surprised if this has put me on cooldown and not actually allowed me to enter world zzz.

Same problem as above… get error message trying to move it. Character still online.

chill bro,by the time they fix our problem SoM will be over,no biggie.
On a serious note,id say just start over a new char honestly.Which can’t be the case for me cause i only play for the thrill of leveling up fast to be among the first’s to hit max level etc,so the fun is ruined for me.
Yeah I was thinking the same, I was playing as much as possible to be among the first. Another experience runined by blizzard incompetence. And clearly they barely give a ---- about this problem.

And honestly, this is what I come to expect from new blizzard. I was surprised to see how “clean” the launch was for blizzard standards. But those thoughts faded really quick hah

Hello J****** ! I hope that your day is going well so far despite this.
It’s my understanding you received the “A character with the same name already exists” error.
When a World of Warcraft character is not properly logged out from the server, it’s possible to receive the error, “A character with the same name already exists” when attempting to login to that character.
1.Try logging into a different character and then logging fully out of the game
2.Reset your user interface to make sure your files and addons are not corrupted
3.You may need to wait to allow the server to remove the character, which happens after 30 minutes of inactivity’

Just want to add to this, i was online in game on a bank alt when a reply came though, they could have messaged me if they needed any further details. what an absolute joke…
