It’s almost as if Fairbanks didn’t read any of the posts where we said overt violence isn’t good either. Huh

There are degrees of violence measured in law for what is suitable for 12, 15, 18 etc. Putting the underage or the young into sexual environments falls under “endangering development” – the same with graphic violence. There’s a difference between exposing these groups to pornography / graphic sexual text compared to stumbling upon it.

Gore levels vary greatly as it can be displayed comically, graphically or even mutely. In WoD you go around burning orcs alive in their huts as they run out screaming in flames. However, I’ve yet to see Blizzard introduce a growth pot futa Night Elf go full raw doggy on someone. Level of Gore is akin to bikini armour in terms of sexuality, both are obvious, both go beyond telegraphing but neither crosses a certain line. The line for Gore is also significantly wider than that for sexuality, nevertheless you see some indications of sexuality as well. No one is going to complain if they see two characters kissing for example, or find a Steamy Romance Novel – the same as Blizzard showing people burn alive, beheadings and other gorey business we’ve seen numerous times in quests.

The violence in Warcraft’s gameplay isn’t especially graphic, either, primarily due to the game’s aesthetic which is largely cartoonish.

Is that really regulated by law? I thought the use of the PEGI rating system was completely voluntary in most countries.

I agree to a degree, sometimes I look back on quests and think “wait they asked me to behead and skin people I kill” while never really going into detail of the act itself i.e - your character simply loots the body over any gorey animations played. Sometimes you’ll just see a blood particle effect of red liquid spray out, but there are definitely some extreme acts of violence in WoW that are displayed in a cartoon manner that fly over my head sometimes – because they are shown so comically or with silence.

If we’re talking video game regulations it depends on your country but the PEGI can vary. In the UK at least we have the BBFC brought in under the act of 1984. Breaching the offence (giving minors prohibited content) is punishable by a fine of up to 5k or even going to prison. It’s law, but it’s a law without much bite to it.

The law itself has definitions to categorize things that contain intense violence, blood and gore, sexual content, or strong language etc.

I think that’s the important part. While we know that extreme violence and sex do happen (more the former than latter, but the people of Azeroth are still people), Blizzard presents in a way that’s quite detached. When the orcs you burn are set on fire, they run around with fire animations on them then die with maybe a simple voice line; we don’t receive a graphic explanation of their skin melting or anything, which is the approach I try to copy in my RP.

There is a lot of suspect things that go on in World of Warcraft that baffles me with it’s age rating. WotLK is one. The Drustvar Zone is another. Waycrest Manor is littered with corpses, reanimated pig men, worms that nest in your body.

I think it goes way beyond the pegi 12 “Video games that show violence of a slight more graphic nature towards fantasy characters or non realistic violence towards human-like characters…”

Whilst some things such as people being burned alive doesn’t SHOW their skin melting and sticking to their clothing, and their tongues and flesh swelling in their mouths, and detail the disgusting smell. There are quite a few scenes where people are screaming in terror.

I don’t honestly know the point I am trying to make at this point when it seems most people here are in agreement that there is a line with violence and sexual acts in this game that really shouldn’t be crossed.

What can be respect however is that when the majority of people RP these things, they’re often done in private.

In wow, the quests that are deemed to show torture (like the infamous Human Seedling quest) have an alternative option. Even the quest were you beat up a Quilboar to interrogate them has the option of just tickling him.

Was there the alternative to the one where you beat up a Scarlet to interrogate them? The one from Death Knight zone.

The real torture in that one is having to extra slowly kill Scarlet after Scarlet until you’ve had a solid 30 of them before one finally spills the beans.

That said, there’s nothing explicit there, so it’s kinda moot. You’re literally just whacking someone with a glowy stick.

Who’s covered by that law? Are parents punishable for allowing their children access to content that is “prohibited” for their age group?
If so, that’s a very interesting law.

When it comes to these ratings. All it means is that it is illegal for retailers to sell the product to someone under the age of said age rated product. It is not illegal for an under aged person to use said product.

So a 16 year old can’t go and buy GTA. But his Mum or Dad can. The 16 year old can however play GTA. As long as Mum and Dad let him.

I am bitter about this. Because my Mum and Dad wouldn’t let me play San Andreas. :frowning:

good because there is super scary SCARY explicit things in that game that are totally a DANGER TO ALL KIDS and not exclusively accessible with pretty extensive modding.

Oh sorry! I didn’t see what you wrote there! I need to pay attention a bit better. Sorry dude

This is curious. I should like to find out if we have similar laws in Denmark

If there is, they don’t care. Because I was buying 18+ games when I was very obviously not.

Yeah I am happy it was brought up. It’s always nice to learn about some laws from where you’re from. If you’re gonna put up a debate or try to correct, or even just join in, it’s worth studying up so you can contribute in a healthy way
