An Update on Our Response to the DDoS Attacks

We have begun resurrecting player-characters that were lost during recent distributed-denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks on our Hardcore realms. Our preliminary focus has been on characters that died during attacks on 24 March, and we are expanding the scope of our review to consider resurrections of characters lost during confirmed DDoS incidents after that date.

For dead characters that were transferred from Hardcore realms to Normal (PvE) realms, we have taken steps to return these characters to the Hardcore realms in the state they were in prior to being transferred, and we have flagged them to be playable as though they never died when you next log in.

  • You must go to the character log-in screen on your Hardcore realm and log into the previously-deceased character to complete the process.

In the event of future character deaths due to DDoS attacks, we will only restore characters that remain on their Hardcore realm. Please note that in the future, should your character die due to a DDoS attack on a Hardcore realm, it cannot be restored if the character is subsequently transferred to a Normal (PvE) realm.

We are continuing to strengthen the resilience of WoW realms and the speed at which we respond to character deaths on Hardcore realms caused by DDoS attacks.

As a reminder, Blizzard Customer Support cannot assist with issues related to characters who have died on Hardcore realms. Please do not contact Blizzard Customer Support with any inquiries regarding character deaths on Hardcore realms.

Thank you all for your efforts. Though my character that died due to the DDoS appears again in the Soulseeker realm, it’s flagged as “Character Locked”. I’m hoping it just take some time to revive all the affected characters right?

What about my character that died in 23.03 because of DDoS its was severeal minutes after Onlyfangs got DDoSSed

Let’s be honest, this will do more damage to the hardcore community in place then do it good.

You’ve effectively gone back on your word of the original status of hardcore and bent the knee to a bunch of crybabies.

They chose to raid whilst the server’s were under DDoS and then cried wolf when they wiped due to a server disconnect, they could’ve just done it another night or not streamed it and done it like the countless other guilds that have been doing it in the EU for the past year now.

Just another L for the Hardcore community.

This is a perfect example of how you can never make people happy. A large fraction of the people on a hardcore realm die, others also quit because of it, it already shows in the economy and how you’re able to find dungeon groups.

And someone argues reviving them hurts the server more than it does good.

Also, keep in mind not everyone is or can be aware of DDoS attacks happening. Not every raid guild can keep track of what’s currently happening and fell victim to first DDoS attack. A lot of people also just logged in to play that day and then died. Dying to DDoS is NOT in the spirit of hardcore realms and this is a huge W to Blizzard.

Can we have Dc protect? So if you have internet lost or pc crash, you have like 25 second to log in back?

Ddos attacks can happen smaller or bigger scale, sometimes you didnt even notice, or dont affect a larger playergroup.

What if someone died because of smaller lvl attacks? They character ressurected back? I guess not. Good old double standard.

We can already see it in this thread… “What about MY char that died 1 day before”. Because reading 2 sentences is “hard”

Blizzard will apparently never learn that when you give people a finger, they will try to rip your whole arm off…

I feel sorry for the CS reps, that will now inevitably get swamped evertime somebody dies to a lag with “It was a DDoS attack!!!” whines.

On the other hand, the sheer unadulterated stupidity of already knowing it´s going on and then still playing HC is just on another level. It´s like compaining you were hit by a car while playing football on the Daytona International Speedway, or traveling to an active war zone and complaining about getting shot. “But it wasn´t my fault!!”… Sure, right… You just keep telling yourself that while Petrus considers requiring a minimum IQ to enter heaven :wink:

If they want to restore average players that probably didn´t know, great, good for them. But very specifically the people that obviously new beforehand and still decided to farm it for clicks should NOT be restored, because they´ll just do it again next time and knowingly cause another :poop:storm.

I see your point but for Onlyfangs (for example) it’s likely they got specifically targeted so their only chance to survive is not raiding at all. Restoring characters takes away that power of abusing DDoS to keep them from playing.

What will happen to the Soul of Iron buff?
Will it be broken, as it allegedly was to the players inadvertently restored on Stitches after the big DC’s there?

Lost my character, among many others to DDOS on Soulseeker EU on 24th around 15:35 server time. No resurrects, or locked characters yet tho.

I just logged in after the news that restoring players had begun. I looked at my characters, I looked at the other players running around in STW. I exited WoW and just sat there, blankly staring at my monitor.

Bear with me for a longer explanation:
When we played the honour-based version of HC, known as the IronMan Challenge back in original Cata onwards. DCs were normal happenings for many of us. Old, crappy cables, old ‘toasters’, DDoS attacks, dog chewed my cable, overload … you name it, it happened.

Many were the times, I re-rolled.

  • I still remember the day I re-rolled the same character no less than 7 times because of DCs.
  • Another day I lost a high level, at full mana and health, attacking one mob 4 levels under mine, 2 hits, DC, and return to a dead Challenger.

That day I made up my mind to keep on playing this toon, as those DC’s were so not my fault (it was a broken thing in our cables, repaired later that same week).

It just did not work. It was not fun any more, the excitement and joy had left my gameplay. I became reckless, and soon she died by my stupidity. I rerolled, and had fun once again.

I had that same no fun, no challenge feeling logging in just now. Only today I can’t remedy it by re-rolling.

Then I logged out and felt very sad.

In my opinion there’s only thing that can save the integrity of WoW Hardcore: The Soul of Iron Buff. Implement this on all servers, of all types, and once broken, it is broken. No healing, no restore.

I think HC as we knew and loved it, ended today.

If you are a regular person, not part of any raiding or streaming guild let us know here if you had your character ressurected. It would put alot of peoples mind at ease since there has been alot of talk they will only ressurect streamers thanks

I am not a streamer, my character is a returned back to the server since i transferred it, it’s locked and still a ghost. i can’t login back to the character as they are still doing the update i requested on the character (as per the tooltip, or as i believe until the update is done).
