That’s what happens when you fundamentally change the game by adding way more players than it was designed for.
Try playing football with 88 players on the field.

If you’re on such a populated realm I would strongly advise you to skip STV.
Over crowding of zones is a real problem, and can become quiet annoying (including people from your own faction trying to kill you by luring mobs over you and running away / using feign death or similar abilities).
And i’m playing in Hydraxian warlords, which considered to be the less crowded server…
Well it is really noticeable these past few days (Cannot quest, crowded zones and camped quest mobs). Perhaps it is all in my mind and I am only now noticing what has always been there because I recently read about layering being disabled on many realms and eventually all realms by the start of phase 2.
Be that as it may, it really does not feel great to log into the fourth server I have tried to call home since WoW Classic launch back in August, to be met with queues, not to get into the game mind you, but to simply take my turn killing a normal (not even named) quest mob that spawns every 5 minutes in a quest area.
I will concede that STV might not be the best place to pass judgement on, since it is such a huge zone and there’s many quests to be done there as well as two transport hubs for Horde and Alliance.
I don’t know, I feel a bit meh about the entire Classic launch now after thinking about my experience of it so far.
Not had any luck in finding a server, first one was queues for 7~8hours, get in and play for a bit, then get booted when a layer crashes to be put back into another queue for 4~5hours. That server was Golemagg.
I then went to Firemaw and found that although I get into the game and play reliably, there was so much layering exploiting going on in the guilds I joined (inv for layer pls) that I felt like I wasn’t having a real Vanilla WoW experience, I was there for Vanilla WoW back when it first launched in the US, before it came to EU and I can guarantee you all that the main thing people talked about back then, was how looting a mob you just killed in The Barrens took ages, if Cosmos UI was worth installing over the default UI and where Thottbot was telling us to go on our next quest.
The last server I tried before Netheregarde Keep, was Judgement, this server was new and although Blizzard offered transfers it was practically dead on Alliance, the AH was empty, there was very few guilds and worst of all, it was difficult to find a group to join when I needed help with a quest. I did also see the same type of players in guilds asking for layer hop invites and in zones trying to AoE packs down in spite of people being there trying to quest, because that’s what they saw a popular Streamer do to get world first level 60 and what Icy Veins and WoW is Classic websites recommends as the fastest way to level up. I quickly realized Judgement was not a good WoW Classic server and moved for the fourth time.
I joined Nethergarde Keep finally thinking I had escaped it all and I could finally level in peace, only to find out layering is being disabled and we’ll all be queuing for quest mobs like we originally did for the named quest mobs that took a long time to spawn back when layering was enabled.
Blizzard won’t adjust mob spawn times because that would ruin the WoW Classic experience, but they are happy to put double the amount of players into every server in comparison to Vanilla WoW with layering disabled, because that is cheaper than having twice the amount of servers for the same amount of players.
OK, it has been a very long day and this was bothering me so I had to get it out.
/rant.
EDIT: I have realised now I am in two minds about layering, on one hand it makes zones less populated (good), on the other hand it can be exploited for certain people’s gain(bad). On the one hand layering can make it feel more like a less populated server, like how it was back in Vanilla WoW (good), on the other hand when layering is disabled, we’re left with twice the amount of players, if not more, in every zone (very bad).
Oh noes, this wonderful xyz guide told me to go there and do this, but i cant. The world is doomed cuz im cluesless now as this googled guide dont tell me what to do in this situation.
Thanks for your insight, most useful. Have a like
Nahh, STV wasnt so bad to be honest. you just need to be patient and group up and so on.
Just don’t visit STV, under any circumstances, ever. It’s pure cancer even on PVE realms.
nope . because outside of doing quests in dungeons or doing cleave groups dungeon xp is lower then questing in those brackets.
I’ve not been there yet, but yesterday I ran all the way through Barrens, Thousand Needles and Shimmering Flats with my Hordie. (No he could not Quest there at all - he’s way too low level) I did not meet very many people, I just took my time and loved it all. The views, the scenery, the memories - and not least all that I had forgotten. I only got myself killed by trying to skin a corpse, and was of course eaten by one of those sneaky, stealthing Hyenas.
So maybe there’s hope that around the corner awaits more playable zones. At least the surroundings are always lovely.
I admit that those big groups consisting of four-to-five friends all questing together and efficiently taking out every quest mob in the zone before you have a chance even to blink can sometimes lead to frustration, as it’s almost impossible for a solo player to compete with them. They’re very, very common too, in fact in Duskwood this morning on my server there were two such five-man groups all industriously farming the skeletons and ghouls. I just gave up and did something else… and this was at 7:40 in the morning.
But I expected this. It was inevitable given the still-novelty value of Classic WoW, the fact that most people are still levelling like crazy, and that there’s still quite a few tourists around. I suspect that as more people get closer to level cap, the crowded low level zones will ease off a bit.
Like you I much prefer to quest alone. If it’s just one other person in the area I’ll usually group up, as competing side-by-side is just daft, but being part of those big levelling groups is just no fun at all (for me at least) as it just turns into a mindless zerg fest, with no challenge whatsoever. I also take it as a point of pride that I’ll always try to solo everything before seeking help from a group.
Few things match the sense of achievement that comes from using all your skills and wits to beat a particularly nasty elite quest single-handed. It’s not always possible, but when it works I get a rush. They can keep their stupid Mythic+ or whatever they are called.
That’s the second time I’ve seen you pop up on someone’s post and contribute nothing except miserable, petulant abuse.
I get it, you’re a bitter person, and probably believe that you have good reason to be. Yes, you’re lonely and find it hard to approach people - but you’re the architect of your own downfall. Frankly your attitude is appalling.
It’s not too late to take a good, long, hard look at yourself and mend your ways. Afterward you’ll soon discover that other people are far more willing to spend time with you.
Your playstyle seems extremely similar to mine. I even rather wittle larger groups down one by one getting killed a few times than bashing through it in a group.
Unfortunately currently the circumstances don’t favor this playstyle and its very frustrating to have to move around all the time because of overpopulation.
Its just not how i pictured it.
So i just now uninstalled Classic and cancelled my sub. I have decided to do some serious thieving in ESO, which i left because of Clasic launch but was a heck of a lot of fun.
Classic is going to be here for a very long time and its nice to have a clean experience to look forward too. At least i did the launch this time.
Have fun mate
I’ll be back.
We’re six weeks in at this point. Way past any initial rush hour congestion.
It’s been overcrowded all they way, and it has happened everywhere. Yes, it has dimished enjoyment, at times to the level of why do I bother with this game. Not vanilla-like, at all.
This morning I tried playing on my normal server once again, and was overrun by 5-man groups bulldozering through everything quest mobs and non-quest mobs alike.
Actually I’ve made an alt on Dragonfang (all of level 0 by now ). Then I can play there untill Phase 2 comes around and I get killed and killed over again. When this happens, I hope the promised drop-off has finally hit the Normal servers, so that I can pick up playing there again. If not, I sincerely hope Blizzard will open a few new realms for the orphans of the slaughtering grounds.
You might actually get a surge of players during phase 2. I suspect pve servers will be a common way for people to avoid the charnel house.
I guess that can explain why finding thorium is about as hard as finding astatine in nature.
p2 has only pvp and dragons.
no reason to come back untill p3 with BWL
I didn’t say returning players. I said fleeing players. I mean people may abandon their pvp servers to avoid the prophesied gankfest.
Hi, not sure if this was pointed out to you already, but there are no full servers with layering disabled. Layering was only disabled on low pop servers.
