"Combat" addons gone in midnight end-game content

Whilst addons can be useful, I actually think moving away from them and integrating things into the core game is actually for the best. I can get on board with this change.

Absolutely.

Encounter difficulty/complexity and combat addon updating has been a meaningless arms race for years.

Banning combat addons just breaks the viscious circle.

its baffling to me how you can be so “oh everything will be delivered just fine and there will be no pain points whatsoever” positive, that level of naivety really hurts.

for example the rotational helper that blizz has, and the onebutton thing.

they dont work correctly for a lot of classes, they havent managed to fix that in 2 months and yet you say “oh everything will be fine with this new combat system” WE HAVE ZERO INFORMATION ABOUT

Iceberg dead ahead, steel screaming.

Violins shriek against the cold, the band on deck is ignoring their own snapping strings. The hull is shredded open and water is pouring in. The ship is bleeding metal into the Atlantic, but pasengers are too busy clapping along.

The privileged 3000+ rated dance and cheer and spin eachother around the deck. It’s prom night all over again.

As the Titanic is dragged into the black abyss.

I don’t use any add-on not even dos meter so not really bothered by this for my M+ runs.

It is a great change.

Current WoW definitely needs simplification (making abilities/rotations simpler not easier) and standardization (banning all 3rd party addons and integrating functions in default UI).

It is a good step to the right direction.

What still needs to be done:

  • Not just simplify rotations/abilities, but also talents. Current talent system since DF is unnecessarily complicated and horribly meaningless. It needs to go back to MOP talent system.
  • Not just banning combat addons, but all addons, with no exception.

This needs this: https://news.blizzard.com/en-gb/article/24235745/developer-insight-combat-for-everyone-in-midnight

If they muck either of them up this will be a total mess.

Let us pray that they do not. I’d love to get my focus back on the world and out of the UI.

Roleplayers and completionists will knock on your door asking on what tree you want to be hanged on. (im overdramatizing but you get what i mean)

Imagine disabling ATT  Sure Blizzard would kill the game for the big community of collectors

Without bother comb it through too thorougly was there any mention related interrupts and kick tracking?

Ion and the other guy did say that they dont care about outside, so technically you can have advantage over some arena master outside arenas if youre able track their cd.

They wont care have addons that dont work inside instanced setting for the actual end game in rated gameplay for the pvp end game in rated arena for example in where they disable all addons and the ability to track kicks and so on.

Yes, they’re adding a way to track other player’s cooldowns. I must presume this would include kicks, but I cannot be sure.

I cant see anything related interrupts or enemy cds in the link. And they said in that other link specifically “no expectations” and some odd takes on instanced gameplays cd tracking

Could you paste me the part where they speak of enemy cd tracking, its quite long read and I couldnt see it.

Njeah I misread it. It seems like the question is about tracking your player’s CD’s for arena, and then instead they answer by talking about seeing what CC’s are affecting a player, which is a completely different feature.

Idk.

But honestly, I’m not too mad if it’s gone. I think coordinating between players should be a skill for players to manage, not the game itself.

What I just want above all else is that my class plays well using the default UI and that useful, powerful spells should be most visible. That’s my #1 concern right now.

I read through it I cant see any mention of enemy kicks, just party cd.

“We don’t want gameplay to rely on addons to show the information that players need. Going forward, we plan to design the game so all information required to use abilities with intention is available in the interface.”

Thats pretty phrase example but how does it help me track my opponents kicks as a warlock or a healer so I know when I can cast.

Yes coordination, however how do you coordinate with your team whether your enemy has kick on cd or not? How do you know if he has kick ready or not without seeing it in addon. How I cast a spell as caster or healer without knowing whether they have kick or not, how do I know my fake casting was succesful if I dont see whether they have kick or not.

I think people dont realise how big buff this is for melee, if caster and healers cant juke aka fake cast in PvP. We lose the only ability to being able to cast spells in this game if we are not able to fake cast reliably. Basically this means that anything that relies in fake casts will be dead, only instant cast and such will be playable.

It doesn’t. It’s an empty promise, but one I am actually going to choose to trust because the rate at which they are adding combat addons to WoW right now is absolutely extreme. Someone gave them rocket fuel up their end.

Oh that’s easy. He either tells you with a macro in /p, or you look at the nameplate which says who cast the interrupt.

If your argument against this is that it’s too overwhelming to figure out what’s going on right now, I agree - and will refer you back to their post on combat simplification. It’s about time!

Back in ye olde days kicks cost a GCD and had a very distinctive sound effect.

That’s the fix.

Will they do it? Dunno. They should!

I’m speaking of fake casting aka juking not anything what party can coordinate in comms really, gameplay in PvP which every caster and healer does in order to cast anything in this game.

Basically you have macro like /stopcasting on a bind somewhere or you use some button for the key bindings setting named stop cast, you juke melee by starting spells and interrupting the spell right away or little later creating unexpected patterns in your fake casting for them so they cant predict whether youre really casting or not, if you are succesful in interrupting your cast with this method they waste their kick on you and you are free to cast anything you want for the next duration of their cd of their interrupt.

This is the bread and butter of any healer and caster gameplay and its called juking or fake casting, there is no way of doing it without seeing whether enemy has kick on cd and we have no way of knowing whether they kicked already or not. It is also direct buff to melees and any other classes that dont rely on it.

Warlock, priest, shaman, druid, mage these all juke their casts constantly in order to be able to cast in PvP with multiple enemies on them and them majorly being the focus targets due hard casting things.

Yes, Alyth, I’ve been juking spells in this game for 21 years, I know what you’re talking about.

The way I used to tell that I could safely cast was that, if I had a rogue sitting on my tail, I’d hear a whooshing sound like a leg lifted up. In fact since the combat visuals were so clean then I could even see the rogue lift his leg up and kick my character at around belly height.

Once I saw this, I had a little clock in my head saying “you can now cast for 15 seconds”.

This is where my mental load in this game used to go instead of spending it all fiddling with cooldowns and rotations. I used to worry about my enemies and how to beat them instead of worrying about all the procs and all this other nonsense.

Good. Addons that tell you what to do/call out everything for you have no place in ranked PvP, but have to admit some of them like capping should have been implemented in the game a long time ago.
As for PvE…well, DBM and QoL addons (grey sell repair and so on) are totally fine, M+ rouuting planners should stay too. I doubt they will implement these as actual features.

It’s quite disturbing to consider fake casting been major part of the gameplay for past 20 years and they just going to disturb it like this and give melee this buff of casters unable to fake anymore.

Nah the game is so bloated with sound and animation and explosions and anime effects that its impossible to see things like that anymore

Assuming they clean up the combat visuals you’ll have no further trouble. I played PvP without kick tracking for 7 years before I started using it. You start to get a feel for it. But this assumes that you can actually see/hear being kicked and it failing, which nowadays is often too hard.

Which is why I said that these changes and the class changes have to come together to create something cohesive and readable. If they fail at this, it all falls to pieces.

Yes. They have to fix this. They HAVE TO HAVE TO HAVE TO.

If they don’t, this will ruin everything.

Though of course one might argue, and I have for a long time, that this is bad anyway. We shouldn’t need to use a hundred addons and play World of UICraft due to bad combat visuals. The game should have good visuals.
