Whether they’re visually pleasing or not is by the by. You’re simply enhancing your game using third party tools to get an advantage, this is especially important when considering PvP.
Not for a second am I claiming addons are cheating, but look at the optics of your opinion.
You’re wanting to change the way the game gives you information, SO MUCH that you’re willing to essentially play a completely different version of the game than what was originally intended.
You want all the information available to you in an easy to look at format. Well, thats not possible! Through playing the game, learning how mechanics interact and thinking about things you can still perform well.
Look at the alpha for crying out loud, rather than forming an opinion on nothing. They’ve introduced the things you’re talking about here:
- A built in version of WeakAuras, to track essential cooldowns (of your choice)
- They’re updating the UI customisation.
- There are new health bars!
- You can track your bleeds, DoTs, etc on those health bars!
- You can track debuffs in a more clear an concise way.
These are all improvements that are now baked into the game, so why would you need addons on top of that.
You’ve then moved on to animations, which isn’t this topic at all. But I do tend to agree, there is a lot of “stuff” going on. But thats part of the game, they’ve designed it that way. What are you proposing? “let me have addons so I can remove visual effects from my screen so I can get an advantage” - To me, that’s simply not fair for players who don’t do that.
Lets not get into a discussion about each others “cognitive load”, I’ve played the game a while, and I understand how it works enough to chat on the forums and give an opinion, just like you!
If you make the wrong decision in a split second, you will learn from it. You won’t make that decision again, you don’t need an addon to tell you that as it takes away from experiencing things, and experimenting and getting better without crutches.
Games like the Binding of Isaac are a prime example. You pick an item up, “oh no, that’s ruined my build! I’ll watch out for that next time”. You don’t just default to “I need an addon to tell me that something bad will happen if I do this”
Play the game yourself, figure it out yourself, learn from mistakes, and try to improve.
