From what I understand the author is going to make a heartfelt (and long) post to the US forums about this soon. Hopefully after that I’ll (If necessary and with their permission) crosspost it to reddit, where if it gets updooted enough it will be fare more likely to be seen by Blizzarrd than on the forums (let’s be real, they don’t read these things, even the US forum which is probably a whirlwind of 8.1 posts atm).

And no, the addon does not work. Some folk already tried it. The addon can SEND data but it can’t read it. The fundamental issue is all addons are barred from accessing anything in the bnet group chat.

My five fiddies of mind on the topic of addon:
I never used CrossRP and i imagine it brought you all RPers joy. I had seen that joy during the RP-PvP campaign of Ogrepowered campaign in Ashran. It was nice to see the proper use of crossrp addon.

However. Take in minds this is not only way the addon would be used for.
Argent Dawn, Moonguard. Other RP servers. They all have one thing in common, and that is that a big amount of community engages into EroticRoleplay aka ERP.
Just before exotic rp memes of trade chat go live.

Blizzard has a soft approach to ERP, but still does not condone it. Specially since we all know what kind of wickedness is there - from demonisbeastiality (particular and and human female char with Felhounds) to normal kinks and back to different vore and gore…

As an artist, its… an interesting look at arts out there in webs. But characters that engage into these are existant in world of warcraft. And do these things.

It is not something which is normal for the western and eastern standards of comunity.
It is why they usually act there on the premise of Terms of Use.

The actions are soft against these, but to be fair - this is my whole biggest fear.
People abusing the rather innocent looking addon for uninocent things.

My final resolution
At the moment, addon is only broken, i am sure. We will see its creator work on fix and it might be delivered.

Perhaps we shall be blessed by Bluepost which can explain that the admin team that keeps in check these sorta things is in support of my fears. Whom knows. I dont, thats for sure xD

And finally:

You could always cross RP by contacting over establishing contact over battletag before. Cross RP never died. Or is the old school of cross RP just inconveniant to you all?

There’s a difference between cross RP before and after the add-on.

Before, you can RP that way, which works. But that’s limited to you and the person you’re talking to. I don’t know a way for groups to be able to do that without Discord.

Once the add-on surfaced, literal armies of both Alliance and Horde were able to seamlessly talk to each other. Prisoner exchanges were the norm in Ashran during the Ogrepowered campaign. You could literally walk into the Salty Sailor in Booty Bay and catch the conversation between a crew of Alliance pirates as an orc.

Also, CrossRP has no effect on ERP. People are still being lewd over private channels before it. The relays on the add-on are public to anyone reading it. Hell, ERPers avoided CrossRP because of it. Many who have non-lewd profiles didn’t want to get outed.

It wasn’t just being able to talk to each other. It was being able to do so as a community We as a whole server just had that pulled from underneath us just as we started to get accustomed to it and for a lot of people, it lit a fire in them that made them want to play again.

Blue (the developer) should hopefully be making a big post about this, that will get transferred to the forums. It stems down to Blizzard no longer making it so that addons can be read from communities. Meaning you can still send messages, but they can’t be read to be translated.

With that being said, there’s a few alternatives:

As Siavash has said, Discord can make a good alternative. It’s been used before in the past for his events, and worked very well. The only issue is having to alt tab to check it.

Or, alternatively…

[RP Connect] still exists. This is an add-on that requires both Alliance and Horde to be in a raid party, and one person on both sides having each other on BNET. Then, they can use RP Connect to sync up the raid/parties and do communication through that. It’s not perfect, it’s damned complicated… but it’s what we did before X-RP became a thing.

There’s no possible way for a work around with the addon itself?

This is a massive shame. Kinda another nail in the coffin for rp subs I imagine for this expansion. I know there are work arounds, but being honest, it’s far too much effort and detracts from immersion switching between screens etc, all the time.

Fingers crossed it’ll get sorted. It was the best addon by far I thought.

To update. RP Connect appear to cause the game to have an error and crash.

A shame. However, the creator is hopefully going to update it for 8.1 as I just found out… so we’ll see. There’s at least possibly a future alternative.

I have no idea why you feel the need to bring ERP into this. The addon itself only carried messages through a chat system and then spat out a translation into speech bubbles and emote text. The chat system it uses could also be used for ERP if people really wanted, addon or no.

I can’t help but feel you’re trying to make some kind of typical anti-ERP statement when it’s not relevant or called for. I seriously doubt ERP is why the addon has been seemingly broken on purpose.

The creator CAN’T make a fix. Addons can no longer read information from the community chat, which is how the addon worked. We will likely not get a fix unless Blizzard makes a change.

But what if people used battletag to eearpee?! Oh the humanity! Think of the children! Close it down for the greater good! Yadda yadda.

Speaking more seriously, try using one on one battletag conversations, or even the group chat window, to try and facilitate an RP event with 50+ people. Let me know how that goes. I’ll wait.

We really need an answer for this from Blizzard. They just need it to be made possible for addons to use communities again, that can’t be too much to ask.

There’s bound to be other addons that are affected by this.

Yes PLEASE blizzard make something for the RP peeps or let us bring back the addon, cross RP brings so much to our RP stories makes it more enjoyable if you don’t want your stocks to continue to fall then LISTEN TO YOUR PLAYERS we pay for your game!

Ow that hurts, I really do hope this is just temporary and will be fixed at some point.
I really enjoyed using it for Booty Bay RP.
