I do not see any player or non-quest mob names unless they are hostile (i.e. pvp) or in combat (mobs) or needed for quest.
For me names and name plates are anti-RPG mechanic and I preffer them as mousover. And considering most people are abysmally dry-minded when naming their characters, I am glad that Blizzard has given us so many ways to customize UI.
And thing with that is that, when I lived in france and used local azerty keyboard and made my names there, I did not even think if it ishard to type someone else as those letters were on my keyboard and were the ‘correct way’ spell names in French.
I now use my own language qwerty board and live also in different country, there are some characters of my own I cannot send mail without my characters being in same guild/friends list so that game system would fill in the name.
I never have made character names ‘to look hard’ or ‘unique’, but Europe has so many nationalities, and unique languages.
Random trivia. Back in days - you were not able to post on forums if your player character had any ‘non US’ letter because Blizzard had never realised this. And so to post on eu forums a lot of people had to make L1 alts. I do not even recall when did the actual EU support for forums come ?
I dont hate russions, i hate restrictive systems that disallows usage for latin leters just because you are on russian realm.
This is simply dumb. All realms should allows full range of UTF-8 characters. Except special characters. Thats it. I havent tried to create cyrilic named character on english realm but I certainly can create character with polish/east European accents.
So inability to use latin alphabet on russian realms is just dumb. And if we can’t create characters on english realms that is dumb as well.
Yes, like so many shortcoming in this game, this is a big one.
I couldn’t believe how hard it was for me to find an addon for transliteration. Eventually I found one called “Translit” with only some obscure external link from a project page and it causes error messages, so I had to exclude it again. Why didn’t Blizzard integrate such a feature? (Because they have a rep of not being good at avoiding antisocial behavior.)
Imagine any time you see a Cyrillic name, next to it is a Latin name you can speak and address people with. Immediately almost dissolves the barrier and even promotes intercultural connections when you learn what those strange characters translate into. (Same reason why the Dutch are so good at English - their foreign TV and movie content is Dutch-subtitled. The brain picks it up naturally.)
I could also say with a wink-wink that getting familiar with Russian sooner than later might be wise, heheh. But against that goes the political hostility that leads to things like “Russia” being blocked as a name for a hunter pet while “USA” is fine.
That’s the general issue with functionality covered by addons. You cannot count on community support being up-to-date. As in this example, there can be gaps occuring, despite a demand for a functionality.
I did wonder how things faired from the otherside of the fence and if the players from other countries had similar struggles when it came to names.
I had some of these problems with mail also, postal has been an addon I have used for years and it’s amazing, really works with weird character accents I can’t type but when it’s the first letter of their name, well I’m just outta luck! aha
That predates my time in wow, I started using the forums during early cataclysm and it’s this expansion in particular that I started to become more than a tourist…
Also speaking of forums & cataclysm, Someoneelse is a familiar name, I feel they was an mvp at one point? I recall reading the proffession forums quite a bit back then, many a handy resource that really helped me improve my money making game back then, if I recall that correctly - Thanks!
As i said previously. Russian realms were their own region so there was no need for Latin characters. They’ve did very little for client support in any language except connecting the Russian servers to the Europe region. (Are they even based in Russia now?)
How can you be forced to use your national alphabet? It’s your national alphabet.
“Players on English realms are dumb idiots, they are unable to play. People on English realms are forced to use Latin alphabet and are unable to use Cyrillic…”
Now imagine that written in сирилик. Russian players are great, show some respect. I cannot see this thread as anything else than a russophobia.
I’m Russian and what I see is just bunch projecting inferiority complex people whenever they cry “xenophobia” “anti Russian” or “bigots”.
Because Russians are taught to hate the West and respond extremely emotionally whenever someone criticizes them or their country. It’s a societal desease, I see the exact same behavioural pattern in other nationalities, albeit few thankfully.
Most people don’t respond this way whenever their language is criticized. Which is why when I see Russians crying like this, I just cringe and roll my eyes. Because whenever they do that, it only makes their situation worse and justifies this stereotype. And I’m willing to fight that stereotype because I have pride for my nation, and prove them wrong by having a strong back and self-respect.
Which I hope my fellow readers keep their hope that not all Russians fit this negative stereotype, thank you
