In all honesty, I don’t exactly mind it when a character is made attractive. What I find quite abrasive is when the only value of the character is their looks. Its like Throgan’s only value is his muscles instead of the fact hes a half breed struggling to find a place in the Horde which has given him a lot of RP opportunity when I used to main him.
People want to think of their pretend elf as attractive.
Jealousy is an ugly thing, OP.
A man intoduces the woman he met on the fair to his father
Father: Son… i am dissapoint.
the son looks at his father with widened eyes
Son:Why?!
the man circles his finger around the woman’s hourglas shaped waste
Father: how is this malformed tavern wench going to bare your children, you koboldbrained boarsack?!
Hey buddy I think you got the wrong door. The leather club is two blocks down.
Most characters in RP, be they male or female, are described as or at least implied to be more attractive than the average. Even scars and other imperfections are often described as to not detract from the character’s beauty.
Of all the sins of character creation this is in my opinion one of the more innocent ones.
It doesn’t bother me too much as WoW is a high fantasy world where people like to play ‘larger than life’ characters and scenarios. It’s the norm fantasy trope that is supported by the game visuals and the game’s official art. Beautiful heroes and heroines in a dramatic world.
That said though, I would enjoy seeing more diversity to the appearance of female characters. But not only when it comes to roleplay; I think there’s still more to be achieved across different medias in general (games, films etc) for female characters to reach the same level of diversity and still be considered as ‘cool’ as male characters. If you for example go to the Artstation website (the leading showcase platform for games, film, media & entertainment artists), after a while of browsing it’s quite easy to note that female characters tend to look more alike while there’s more variation to the male characters. When it comes to films, it’s easier to think of male characters who aren’t conventionally attractive yet are popular, than female characters. It feels as if there’s this firmly persistent idea that it’s easier to give more diverse male characters (of all sizes and ages) the cool factor than female characters and I think it has always bled to roleplay too.
Even in WoW the male models across the different races are stylized to look more different from conventional beauty than their female counterparts. For example when you compare the male draenei/troll to the human male model, and female draenei/troll to the female human model. Most of the female models fall to the hourglass shape and closer to the human figure than the male ones.
But even if we were given more character model customization options, I’m not sure if there’d still be much of a change right now. I don’t see too many people using the less conventionally beautiful face options that already exist. And during the Stormwind Harbor Market I’m not sure if I saw even a single Kul Tiran female around (but that might also be because they’re much taller too than the normal humans? I don’t know).
To summarize: I’m too used to it being the norm in WoW that it doesn’t really bother me, and I think the way women are most commonly portrayed in other entertainment platforms too also plays a part in why so many roleplayers roll that way. But on the other hand I’d love to see more diversity! I think that makes for more relatable and memorable female characters.
Edit: grammar
Where are the naked hourglass worgen, nightborne and goblins?!
Thanks.
While I prefer the idea of writing an engaging 3D character first, not acknowledging the gender differences kinda sucks too. It’s fun to have those little jabs.
People want to RP “pretty” chars. That’s both the case for female and male characters. Been a while since I’ve seen a male character that didn’t fit the ideals of big muscles, chiseled jaw etc.
Those that don’t look pretty are as rare as ugly females.
In any case, yeah people could at least pay more attention to attractive traits characteristic for specific races. Judging from novels and so on, I doubt Orcs find an Orc woman with an hourglass figure, no muscles and a cute little face very attractive.
Hourglasses be gone, My Belf female is a bit on the scrawny side, and my human female is a Squaddie, she has the kind of build from Vasquez in ‘Aliens’
“Hey, Vasquez, have you ever been mistaken for a man?”
“No, have you?”
I mean a conventionally beautiful character is fine, I suppose, as long as the actual -character- is interesting. Someone said it better, above, If you can make a character and it works as female or male, then its the character that is interesting…
Yeah we’re in a weird place where.
Attractive : Roll eyes, probably not interesting character.
Ugly : This is unequivocally good RP.
When in reality both of those statements are right and wrong.
I guess people are just weary of seeing the same tropes here and there.
Hey there.
It always tends to be the popular or more “humanoid” races that call themselves above average. It’s quite common to see a human male that’s always about 6ft in height instead of 5’8 or other heights. Also have you ever seen an ugly elf, or atleast one that is decent looking that is described in their bio? I certainly haven’t. They are always above average.
Usually the least played races have the more flaws in their TRP3. For example, my physical despcription is just beer belly
Males with dad-bods are the superior form. - So…
Ha, you have a Dad-bod? Pathetic, Bow before Nar’s Grandad-bod.
That’s because in Warcraft, elves are generally described as graceful and so on. I can’t even remember one time an elf wasn’t described as somewhat pretty in canon lore (from the PoV of human ideals anyway). Elves themselves among each other can be less pretty by for example not fulfilling ideals of the particular race.
For night elves:
Over the past fifteen millennia, a tall stature and long, tapered ears have become favored traits in all bloodlines.
One could easily make one with shorter stature and short ears, which I’ve seen done sometimes. Their lifestyle doesn’t much favor overweight or other undesirable traits either. Either way, for human standards, that night elf described above would probably still be hella pretty. It’s just part of elves in Warcraft or really in almost every fantasy universe.
Elves are in fact so attractive that they’re almost uncannily pretty. Like it’s almost offputting how hot they are, to humans. Pretty sure that was a Jaina thought process in Arthas? It was novel lore somewhere.
Also that’s why red dragons like being elves. 'cos they wanna be hotties.
are there any dragons who like to turn into goblins?
Wrathion’s egg guardian in Badlands (Rhea?) used a goblin form iirc. She was a red.
