I think that the examples are bad because all RIO and Gearscore does is provide information, the ones that are against it are generally people who don’t want to be measured because in their opinion “they are too good” or people that don’t have enough time and can’t put up with everyone else but what’s common to both camps is they expect people to invite them because they are special.
A good example would have been addons that used to play the game for you but this among other things is no longer possible.
Addons can still be a double-edged sword in terms of maintenance and benefit though.
Rio is a good example actually. I’ve been called a bad player because of low RIO score, even though I don’t do m+ often.
What they were intented for is completely overshadowed over by other people’s self ego.
The whole got a better rio then you. Get on my level noob kind of attitude.
RIO is a bad example because the addon is nothing but a tool (no pun intended) and trying to blame it for something a person does by abusing it is not only wrong but silly.
The person is the one who promotes toxic behaviour not the tool.
RIO is a website, the addon itself just display the data from the site.
That is how people try to grade experience and performance in M+. The higher the key the more important picks become. If you don’t do M+ often you aren’t the best pick, simple.
When I was progressing my alt I tried to do some low M+ including +7 in time for the essence. The amount of errors or lack of dungeon knowledge in the low RIO bracket so late in the expansion is staggering. Even my alt doesn’t get any benefit of the doubt when PUGing as people already know how bad it is and the alt doesn’t have a score
This is a MMORPG and you always will be graded against others. You will be called on you bad performance in raids, dungeons and any other group content. If you don’t like competitive nature of this game - play single player games.
If people require 2K RIO for +2 then it’s stupid and stupid requirements do happen, but it’s the key owner choice.
And there lies the biggest problem. While they help out to seed out potential candidates, the game is not meant to be played in such competitive environment. WoW started out to be a Online RPG where people can band together and have “adventures” which was and still is the core concept. But we’re also have to consider Mythic plus players where it is obviously important to have competent people.
to me its “quality of life” improvements its nice to have but overreliance is something you “dont” want to have, like the those cars that can park themselves but if it fails and you relied soo much on it to the point it severely affects your capability to park on your own…same deal applies to certain addons but overall they are improvements and a must for the highest chance of success which is what people want
The WoW dev team could easily create raid/dungeon warnings that are on par with addons like DBM. They could even hire some of these addon creators to help with implementing things like this into the game.
To me it sounds just that someone used add-on against you, and now you insist Blizzard change accordingly. Am I right ? So was it RIO, Spy or damage meter that made you upset ?
They certainly can even though at the end it’s a duplication of effort with that said if they would ever add something like this 3rd party addons could still pull ahead mainly because authors can actually use their work and build additional features on top of it but maybe that’s a good thing.
As an addon author myself I see no difference between an addon that comes with the standard UI to a 3rd party addon and from the game point of view it’s very similar except to few technical details the only downside with 3rd party addons is the hassle of downloading and maintaining them.
Lol, sounds like I’m being realistic in accepting that they are allowed because they are.
I’m just here to debate whether they should be allowed because of toxicity. Recount is another example of a stupid addon.
Who finds watching a bar chart exciting when you’re literally in a fight with a raid boss. But some people couldn’t live without a bar chart whilst raiding.
A game should be about enjoying the moment. Not statistics.
Edit: If anything statistics have brought this stupid meta trend to the game.
“Oh don’t invite this class or spec because they’re not part of the current meta”
Toxic. Toxic. Toxic!
Well,… there IS challenging content in this game that is also a lot of fun. But you do not get a certain win in it. Sometimes it is usefull to analyse stats.
I come half way - define what toxicity ? Me asking someone to do more dps, or analyse someone’s death log does not make me toxic.
Also my guild while being mythic raiders (not very good, but almost cleared EP) has never asked anyone to have specific addon, or weakaura etc, but what we ask from people is to move from fire - how people move from fire is up to them. And I have reasons to believe that most WoW players are the same. They do not care what add-on you use or not, but that you do your part in TEAM play.
Of course it is toxic. People will bully you for playing a spec when they believe it to be garbage, even if you’re doing easy content.
Example of this happening well from my experience is back I Legion doing a +4 on a affliction warlock (affliction had very good aoe but bad single target) at the start of Legion) and a destro was being rude because I wasn’t destro.
We still did the key. Without that lock. But still because gather info from recount and tak eit too far.
Vanilla:: Blizzard introduced the honour system and ranks.
Vanilla: The community introduced the idea of World First and it became an official thing later.
BC: Blizzard introduced the Arena.
MoP: Blizzard introduced Challenge Mode.
Legion: Blizzard introduced M+.
Hardcore guilds, premades and other form of competitive groups always existed in WoW so competitive play is definitely a thing, it’s just more common and apparent nowadays due esport, streamers and demand for more challenged content.
I play survival hunter, have cleared hc EP and I may go to mythic EP with her. If someone bullies me for being survival hunter (AFAIK least played spec of any class combo and spec in current wow), I gladly challenge them for a duel - be it in meters or RIO score.
If people bully you for no reason, then you can either report them, or ignore them. Also people bullying has no link with addons, but bad personalities.,
