I’m different, despite growing up on games since the Atari 2600 I just can’t enjoy very old games now… like 2D platformers, when there’s better games than that now.
Yeah these are timeless classics, the gameplay is still addictive and fun to this day, there are other examples tho, like Alone In the Dark, an incredibly important and influential game, but it aged very poorly, I would never replay it again.
Its still possible to enjoy games on that level.
For us olderish players.
Just takes a bit of willpower to knock down those mental barriers which make us question anything off.
I recently have been playing through the first kingdom come deliverence game with a completely open mind and have been having an absolute blast with it as a result.
I dunno if i can achieve the same effect with wow, this is and was my most played game by a long shot and still is even though i havent really actively played for longer than a couple months herr and there since legion.
I think that is why its harder to knock those barriers down for wow compaired to other games for me.
I don’t read reviews, I play games based on vibes.
If I don’t enjoy it I don’t play it.
Sometimes when i look at steam reviews i wish i could take those people and drop them in the era of C64 and make them play all those crap games it had and boy did it had a large variety of absolute garbage but we still enjoyed all of it.
I thought this was going to lead somewhere… Imagine my disappointment when I read further.
Honestly, I think you need to take it even further. It’s not enough to simply erase your own knowledge…
Take Classic WoW when it launched in 2019. My friend and I were beyond excited to dive back into the game we loved. We wanted to relive the magic of those early days, but unfortunately, it didn’t turn out the way we expected. Yes, I’ll admit that the mystique of exploring zones for the first time was naturally diminished—it wasn’t our first rodeo, after all. For instance, the thrill of opening the door to the courtyard in Shadowfang Keep, hearing that hauntingly epic music, and seeing the eerie Worgen was something we couldn’t fully replicate.
But the bigger issue, for us, was the attitude of other players. They brought a modern mindset of min-maxing and hyper-productivity to what was, at its core, a 15-year-old game.
We approached Classic WoW with a sense of nostalgia, wanting to relive the experience: the slower pace, the sense of wonder, and the camaraderie of figuring things out as we went. But many others came into it with a completely different goal: to “beat” the game. The focus was on efficiency, rushing through content, and optimizing every aspect of gameplay. It felt less like a shared adventure and more like a race to complete checklists.
So yeah, when it comes to multiplayer games, it’s not enough to just wipe your own memory—you’d need the majority of the player base to do the same for it to truly feel like a fresh experience.
The problem with retail WoW is Ion Hazzikostas and his 99% focus in on Mythic content. Im not going to bother if this random server phasing and sharding goes on. This game does not feel like MMO anymore.
Classic
A girl phoned me the other day and said, “Come on over, there’s nobody home.”
I went over.
Nobody was home.
It is gamers.
Gross generalisation but I think we’re all guilty of it to some degree.
I think as a whole, gamers or well, the Internet dwelling ones like ourselves often like to think they know it all, I’ve often seen remarks about how easy it is to fix X, Y or Z in a game or how a title isn’t upto ‘their standards’.
As if we’re somehow entitled because we spend money, not realising that gaming, like everything in life has its fast food, it’s home cooked and it’s gourmet.
My honest fix was just spending less time on the Internet or of i did, I just turn off other people’s opinions.
People are so bloody negative these days, in a world which is more focused and more open than it ever was, yet people seem more and more grumpy.
Play the games YOU enjoy. I go back and play Quake, Unreal, Golden Axe, MGS1 etc to remind myself of what I used to play.
Were games just better back then? No, I just didn’t give a damn about what anybody else thought and made my own opinion on a title.
Through my own adventure i found i love and became a huge fan of MGS, Mass Effect, Uncharted, WoW, Halo, Gears of War…
The list is endless but I PROMISE YOU
The moment you unplug from all this ‘noise’ not only will gaming become enjoyable again, but life doesn’t seem so miserable.
Try it for a weekend, just do something you used to do, or feel like doing with no internet. It’s actually so relieving.
I personally picked up Brandon Sandersons books finally (1st one) and as huge fan of LOTR myself definitely recommend them!
Which has been a joy as I realised its been some three or four years since I read a book and the last one was actually Metro 2034 (a superb series like the games even if the translation can be a bit wonky).
Players have always been the problem.
Major side note here, nice name reference
Even begining to think we are the problem means bli$$ard PR dept. has already won.
The game is shalow threadmill for items without even proper script.
Even saying, we are the problem, is offensive for someone who isnt yet complete retard.
Even saying, we are the problem, is offensive for someone who isnt yet complete retard.
I’m sorry you feel that way, I assure you there was no intent to offend.
Although I wouldnt say it’s all us, I would however say it could be a combination seeing as it’s not just blizzard games that this effects.
Wow addiction is a serious mental illness very similar to fentanyl addiction. You enjoy it for some time, then you stop enjoying it, but you can’t stop playing (taking) it even if you hate it. And the worst thing it completely burns your dopamine receptors so you can’t enjoy any other games (or drugs) or anything else. So you basically become a depressed zombie. Stop playing wow, get a treatment and even minor things can become fun again.
I’ve had a thought recently after what I saw while hanging out at my gf’s place.
We were eating dinner with their fam and the young boy at the table asked his dad if he can play the gollum game after dinner, yknow the game that kinda looks bad and the gameplay is mediocre at best.
I heard it and asked about if it was in fact that gollum game, indeed it was. I refrained from any comments of course cause I’m not socially insane.
So after dinner we went back to the room and I thought nothing of it, when about half an hour later my gf asked me to heat up the warmth bottle for her, of course I did and in the process passed by the living room on the way to the kitchen, where I saw what cause me to have this question.
This boy was playing the gollum game and having an absolute blast, pure enjoyment, I ended up watching him play while the warmth bottle was heating up, and he told me about the story which makes no sense to me a lotr fan but he loved it, he enjoyed the mechanics even though he wasnt very good. And he had nothing but hte biggest smile on his face.
He was able to take something that for me or in general what i heard to be a complete loss or flop of a game and have more fun then I have seen anyone have in ages playing even some of the most impressive and smooth games.
Which is why I am genuinely wondering if maybe my lack of enjoyment of games is actually me, that childlike sense of not knowing but wanting to and just to see whats around every corner, yeah it doesnt make sense but it’s cool to experience it and just enjoying playing the game. Not for rank, not for any customization, not for any prize just getting to play the game more was enough for him. I’m not gonna lie I was jelous cause I remember havign that much fun, pure fun, but those days have long gone and now although I strive for it. My knowledge of things weighs it down.
i genuinely wish I could forget everything about WoW again, and about blizzard, I want to forget and start again.
So I ask what you guys might think of this, if we can keep it about WoW that’d be great but I do wonder if this is just gaming in general rn?
People love to hate things. Clowns on YouTube etc telling them to do so encourages it.
And said Clowns get clicks from hating on things and profit from it. So they keep doing it. And people keep clicking it. And they hate more… circle of life stuff .
I try to view things as being “not for me” instead of just writing it off as rubbish.
Just because I don’t like something doesn’t mean others will. Your story is the perfect example of that.
That game has an audience, it’s just not me.
The music of Taylor Swift is a good personal example for me.
I don’t like it. But given the amount of people who do out there it’s obvious she’s not producing crap.
She’s just producing something personally don’t like.
And that’s fine.
I don’t need to like everything.
If everyone liked all the same things, the world would be a very dull place.
Play the games YOU enjoy. I go back and play Quake, Unreal, Golden Axe, MGS1 etc to remind myself of what I used to play.

Completely this, I have kept all my old hardware and games from the 1990s until today, and every time I play one of the games I loved and got endless hours out of back in the day, I can’t play it for longer than hour now without going and playing something modern.
Behaviour from game companies has certainly gotten worse in terms of Monetization, but games are no worse than they used to be.
And said Clowns get clicks from hating on things and profit from it. So they keep doing it. And people keep clicking it. And they hate more… circle of life stuff .
True stuff, most famous “content creators” are glorified click baiters who will switch the narrative in whatever direction the wind blows.
One day the game is dying, the next day they’re super hyping some new feature in the game.
I thought this was going to lead somewhere… Imagine my disappointment when I read further.
Unfortunately last time I even remotely addressed that topic I was chat restricted.
And I can assure you my private life in that regard will likely remain far away from prying eyes.
But yeah get baited lmao
I got all of the Legion order hall mounts with one exception - somehow I missed the pally one. I did it last week, and felt an overwhelming sense of nostalgia and homeliness when the quest line took me to a scenario set back in the culling of strathholme. Plus I enjoy playing old C64 retro games on an emulator. So I don’t think I changed, so much as the games I loved moved on. But that also led to my expectations getting higher, so it’s a vicious circle.
