The WoW API has functions that allow counting how many enemy targets are in range. WeakAura doesn’t have a standard trigger for this, but it’s possible to create triggers with custom scripts for more complex stuff.
The Hekili addon also checks how many enemies are in range and uses that information to give recommendations on which ability to use next.
I just know when my stuff is ready, when I use something a timer starts in my head for that thing, then I just press it again (if I need to) when my mental timer goes off.
I prefer to not have that clutter near the screen center. But I play druid and the built-in energy and health bar is alright, although I still rarely look at it because my Shadowed UF shows them quite clearly. But that’s energy-based skills, and I notice when playing warrior or such that the timer-based skills are a lot more attention-grabbing. (I hate shaman because of this - especially enhancement.)
Look at a bigger picture: Convenience UI like you describe reduces eye movements and abets tunnel view and eye muscle laziness. So a more conventional UI is actually good healthy training of peripheral perception and visual acuity. (And thus arguably also more involving.)
Take a look at simulationcraft. It is the base for raidbots and others.
I used it initially to check the DPS and tanking capabilities of a class with talent and gear combinations. It showed me many times how bad a player I was.
Then I got into writing my own scripts, and that leads to really learning the class well. Else you cannot pull the DPS.
Based on that experience, I can say that I personally do not have the visual and brain processing acuity, to compute all what is needed to be able to choose the right abilities in real time. I will make tons of mistakes and I will end up spamming, all the while losing DPS.
Yesterday I was messing with Fury on the PTR, trying out the new talents. I had a dozen buffs flashing (and shifting) on screen, my actionbar was lit up like a Christmas tree, and I had to make decisions: Onslaught, Raging Blow, Rampage, Execute, Odyn’s Fury or maybe Bloodthirst. 5 talents just on Bloodthirst… Could not even find the Enrage buff hiding amongst the dozen other buffs. Let alone what those buffs all are and how they affect the rotation.
Therefore, in my opinion, players who do the Mythics are very, very good. The rest think they are, but are not.
I think it’s more that you trained yourself to work with weakauras rather then other people having some skill that lets them work around it.
My actionbars are simply closer to my characters then the default bottom of the screen so my eyes actually travel less distance in my ui then it would in the default ui.
The only thing I have a weakaura for is for the reflecting prism, it plays the airhorn sound 1 minute before as well as and 30 seconds before expiring
I honestly find WA ui stuff to be annoying, I have everything I need on my base UI, I use sexymap to blow my map up and I use WA’s for boss encouter’s were needed but other than that I usually play fine.
You do realize that WA does not make decisions for you, right ?
It simply displays whatever you want it to display. Some people just like it better than the default UI in some areas (tracking buffs, countdowns, usw).
Futhermore, sound alerts is not even something that the default UI let you have so…
You could say WA is just a tool that makes up for the lack of customization and features the default UI has.
Wether they use it or not, WA is never the reason a player is good or bad at the game.
WAs help me a lot since my ADD and autism makes the game flashing and lots going on the screen hard for me to focus.
So having sounds from WA helps me a lot.
My friends have joked saying I am like a bat… working on sounds to play
Then play without it and tell me how it goes or the star augor mythic weak auras that blizzard literally had to break. Weak auras that auto light up when you should use them?
On my char i use 2 WA’s. 1 for riptide charges and 1 for cloudburst charges/pop-time. I do not even have DBM. And i time up to +20’s.
People are exagerating about WA’s.
