I appreciate the Cathedral of Light in Stormwind has not had the greatest of reputations in recent times, but I wish to do something about it.
I want to establish a small order dedicated to improving Holy RP in Stormwind. It wonāt have any political power, but itās members will focus on making the Cathedral a happy hub for everyone who enters, religious or not.
Furthermore, the order will, eventually:
Hold prayer on at least a weekly basis.
Regularly preach on the Light, with a focus on the three virtues.
Function as a hospital, providing medical as well as spiritual care and guidance.
Educate others on the Light as well as providing free, basic education to Stormwindās needy children.
Fundraise for the Church, as well as other charitable organisations such as the Orphanage.
Open intellectual discussion on the Light - what is it, truly? Is it a being? A force? Will we ever be able to find out?
[MAYBE] Form a small holy militia to join other groups for longer (RP-PvP) campaigns and to assist law enforcement, as well as defend the church from potential unholy influence.
Overall, by meeting these goals, the members of the order will feel closer to the Light and become a better person.
The order will recruit anyone (Not DKs or DHs), as long as their connection to the Light can be ICly justified. Human Priests and Paladins are probably going to be the bulk of the group, though.
There will be little to no events - this is more to facilitate casual RP and improving the once unquestionable reputation of the Light. The casual nature of the guild will hopefully appeal to more busy members of the community who are strapped for time due to school, work, family or another Guild.

The biggest challenge here will be to not fall into the pit of heresy without realising. I humbly believe that the Cathedral deserves some boring old orthodox Holy Light RP, without excess zeal and the likes that are in ample supply by other guilds already.
The intellectual discussion on the Light needs to be done carefully too. Itās not that itās a bad idea; itās just that you should ensure it doesnāt undermine the guildās aforementioned (proposed) orthodoxy.
And while weāre at it, that might mean that a militia force might be a bit too much. Sure, employ paladins, send them on tasks and what not, perhaps even in two-person teams with a priest, but Iād avoid distinctly militant tasks.
That being said, if the guild takes off, this humble warlock here would love to be involved in fundraising and education. May actively contributes to the orphanage anyway IC, so I see no harm in actually RPing it out with a reliable-looking Light guild.
This is an idea Iāve always thought would be cool to run with but never came round to actually doing it, so Iām glad to see someone else going ahead with it.
Though I imagine your biggest challenge will be finding people who are actually dedicated to this kind of RP without being burned out after a few months, if you can get even a small group together I reckon youād really be helping out the general atmosphere of Stormwind, so best of luck.
Edit: Iād also say that perhaps with the exception of death knights and demon hunters class should be disregarded as a factor to consider, as I think pretty much any class can feasibly pull off being a member of the clergy/a theologian/etc. but thatās just my own two cents.
Further Edit because Iām a brainless chimp who doesnāt think before he types: Getting in touch with Albrecht and his Stormwind project might also help you guys get off the ground and running.
Iāll reply in little blocks, thatāll be easier!
@Mayliffe
1 - Orthodox is totally what Iām going for. Far too many āradicalā type guilds (not that I blame them, going ahead and deux vulting people sounds super fun) but I am sort of concerned that if it all goes a bit too casual weāll have naughty radical types trying to delete everything. Itāll be a balance, as you say.
2 - Discussion is open, but yeah, anyone going ahead and changing things too much will be firmly disapproved, as will filthy void infused heretics who pretend to be mages. (gllllaaaaareeee x3)
3 - I think militia force was a bit wrong. I meant something likeā¦ maybe a wing that voluntarily may join RP-PvP if they wanted to alongside another Light-y guild? I donāt know. That was more of an afterthought. Actually, Iām going to revise that bit a littleā¦
4 - But yes, you would be more than welcome. And yeah, thatās what I want, just a normal, law-abiding priestly guild. Plus having a warlock snooping about would be cool.
I feel like it would be a cooler approach if you get this concept without a military arm, but reached out to different guilds/factions within the Light-RP scene who have a military focus and have them carry out the fighting. Naturally you canāt avoid having some people who enjoy campaigns that feature RPvP, but I think itād be super cool if sermons, hospitals and the likes were set up by this concept at RPvP campaigns.
Although Iāve a preference for more zealous concepts, I think something more compassionate/welcoming could be really interesting. Itās usually boring just having one side of the coin on offer.
2 - Yeah, I guess so? My hope is that for most people it isnāt their only character but burning out is really an abstract thing. I know people who like have played their character every single day for the past few years and still do, but some go through different characters every few months! I know Iāve tried a few characters but some stick, some donāt.
Obviously everyone wonāt be confined to the Cathedral or just the district, that would be cruel, not to mention this wouldnāt be an entirely daily thing. Iāll probably work something out like a rota. Work/life balances are important, even for priests!
3 - Death Knights do not smell good and they drip all over the carpets! Boo! But yeah, that totally makes sense!
4 - Albrecht? Stormwind Project? Iāve never heard of this! Is there a AA link or something like that? A Discord? Could you send me some links?
Do those exist though? Oftentimes they seem the zealotry inclined sort, arguably incompatible with the more orthodox angle of the faith to any degree above ātoleratedā.
Thereās a wide variety of guilds/individuals in the Light scene that provide different levels of zealotry. Compromise is also an option.
I think if the OPās concept doesnāt elevate demon hunters and death knights to patron saints in the Church, I think theyāll get along with pretty much everyone.
1 - SERMONS IN PVP THINGS HELL YES, POP UP HOSPITALS WHY DIDNāT I THINK OF THIS AAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
2 - And yes, we need some non-zealot light rp. Not that I donāt like zealots. They are very cool, but the Light is good too, you know? Itās not all deus vult. Or lux vult. whatever it is.
(And DKs and DHs are not permitted in the group but are welcome to visit the church if they stay within arms reach and donāt head immediately to the crypt, but like some people say, is there really a point of them coming in? light probably gives them hives or something.)
Possibly the greatest drive for zealous light worshippers currently is the attitude certain people have towards the faith. Iāve seen demon hunters, death knights, warlocks, void elves walk into the Cathedral and be greeted with open arms, even favoured over paladins and priests. Thatās what Iād say drives me towards zealotry more than anything, at the moment.
And yeah, RPvP campaigns lead to all sorts of options and routes of roleplay.
Compromise always is, and thank goodness for that. RP would be an unenjoyable affair if no one ever budged an inch. I canāt personally recall any active Light oriented guilds that do not embrace zealotry* to a noticeable point, but I will take your word for it.
*For the sake of clarity, zeal is fine and in line with the faith imo. Canon Paladins and Priests regularly make remarks to the effect of that. Itās about balancing that aspect with the others.
Iāll admit I donāt play the game anymore and am now simply a forum goblin and so donāt know the status of this community project but hereās the thread that should tell you everything you need to know about it.
Excuse me, but some of us role play genuinely religious warlocks. May has always been this way, and I see no reason why she should be chased or cussed out of the Cathedral solely because of her class tag.
My death knight has occasionally visited the Cathedral too, specifically because it made her uncomfortable. In the words of the eccentric gnome, āit makes me feel alive again. Sort of.ā Sort of an extreme case however.
Having a guild or community project to represent the traditional beliefs of the Church is a very cool idea.
While I have no problem with the more extremist religious groups - and Iāve played something similar as a Blood Elf in the past - having representation for the mainstream organisation would help Stormwind as a hub.
I suppose it depends on the context. A warlock coming into the Cathedral, dressed in more typical clothing ought to be fine - theyāre accepted members of the Alliance, whose value was noted by King Varian - but if someone rocks up in full Tier 6, glowing demon wings and all, it would be very strange to tolerate their blatant disregard for the sanctity of the place.
Iām sure youāre the former, but the latter does happen too in varying degrees.
Yeah, this is what I was mainly talking about. Iāve zero issues with warlocks, necromancers, whatever, following the faith. Iām talking about warlocks that rock up into the Cathedral decked out in fel green, generally trying to put the Light down or put itās followers down.
Call of the Silver Hand, Sons of Silver, Order of Eastweald. These are three guilds that, although they might harbour some more zealous figures, Iām 99% sure these guilds feature mostly forgiving/compassionate/whatever term you want to use for it paladins.
I definitely donāt try to say that zealous paladins are the majority, itās definitely a minority group and you should be fully prepared for the consequences that can come out of the RP because of it (as the paladin). But you can definitely talk some down to a compromise.
