To clarify this:
The idea behind those BT boosts was to exploit noobs, by overcharching them on items we deemed worthless.
There were 3 epics that weren’t sold by any of the guilds, which offered these services. Not even by the best of the best:
- Madness of the Betrayer (melee trinket)
- Memento of Tyrande (healer trinket)
- The Skull of Gul’dan (caster trinket)
The raiders would have gone mad, if their leaders sold these items. These where the only reason, why they still went into Black Temple each week. You couldn’t replace them in Sunwell. It’s the same situation, as with the trinket from Blackwing Lair.
And of course, there are the Warglaives of Azzinoth.
Once I jokingly asked Vanion, how much a pair of glaives would cost. And he jokingly replied: “If you give me a million Euros, I don’t care about my member going enrage and my account being banned.”
Also there were no (public) SWP boosts until the very end of the TBC lifecycle. They weren’t offered until WotLK prepatch. And only for the first 3 bosses.
Of course you could hire people for your private SWP boost. But that depended a lot on who you were and what you were willing to pay.
We had one customer in SWP:
- former officer of the guild (top 100)
- good recent logs
- filthy rich AH broker so gold was 100% legit
He even transfered server for a month and took a break from the M’uru wipefest. He wanted the feral staff from Eredar Twins so badly. They were 2 ferals in his guilds and both were waiting for the staff. Meanwhile we were giving them to our resto druids for their 2nd gear.
He also took the opportunity to shop some things for 2nd gear at a discount. He paid 50k for the service. You’re a nobody? Double or maybe quadruple the price!
Depending on who you were, Kil’jaeden loot might have been possible too.
But the thing was: Almost all of these items were still in demand. Maybe the twohand sword.
If you were a VIP and had offered 50k to get the BiS weapon for your retri alt, probably a few of the top50 guilds would have been willing to help you out.
Important aspect.
When you farm herbs (for example) and put them into the AH, you have no control about who you sell to. Let’s be honest. We all had botted gold in our bags at some points. There is no way for us to know.
It’s on blizzard to crack this down. You name it.
I was knee deep involved in those BT boost. We all knew, that a huge chunk of that gold probably came from illegal sources. We weren’t delusional.
But the philosophy was: “Don’t ask, don’t tell.”
There was no way for us to check. If we would have declined every costumer were we weren’t 100% sure about the legitimacy of the gold (like with the example of the feral), we would have had almost no customers at all.
I remember one specific case, were we were 99% sure, that he was a gold buyer.
Kara geared retri paladin. He was extremely bad. Applied to -in Harmony- and got declined. Few months later he paid 50k to -iH- for full Hyjal / Black Temple gear (except trinket of course). Then he applied again for -iH-. They had a good laugh and rejected him again.
Then he applied for our guild and other top 100 guilds. We had a good laugh and he got declined. Probably the same for the older guilds. He ended up in a server 3rd guild on a small server.
That guy really thought he can buy his way to the top, lol.
