Sadly don’t understand what a meme is , but anyhoo, I have never found in all my years from 2008 that the mage is a respected class. More like dungeon fodder.

Mage is certainly overplayed because it’s generally an easy ride.
One button in raids and great damage, best aoe grinder and leveler, one of the best pvp classes

I dunno how, why and when they were respected, but mages have always been the meme class of vanilla for as long as I can remember playing on vanilla private servers.
This is 2019 - only keyboard turners and backpeddlers lose to rogues nowadays (and alliance warlocks). Everyone now knows that mage is the one truly broken class in vanilla that is tier 1 in all aspects of the game from start to finish.
Leveling - mage tier 1
Dungeons - mage tier 1
Raids - mage tier 1 (from MC all the way till Naxx)
BGs - mage tier 1
Duels - mage tier 1
Farming - mage tier 1
Meanwhile… rogue
Leveling - tier next-to-last, only better than warrior
Dungeons - next-to-useless, no CC, weak damage before good gear, is melee
Raids - good DPS, but is still melee, dies half the fights, does nothing in air phases, has to literally stop DPSing on several fights or will die
BGs - useless without cooldowns, useless if the player behind the keyboard is a tunnel-vision HK-farming kid
Duels - previously thought to be unbeatable, now players have learned that half the classes can easily 1v1 a rogue
Farming - bottom tier, only beats healers (sometimes)
So, tell me - why should I roll a rogue when I can roll mage?

It was the same on private servers, mages were very common and could get hard to distinguish from eachother. It seemed that most of a mages friends, seemed to be other mages.

Not really I play 7 characters of which only 1 is mage, I pretty sure I know what I see.

Mage is very overrated PvP class and only is great vs warriors. Warlocks, hunters and rogues can all counter mage easily.
As a rogue you could just ambush them while they are drinking/eating. Easy one shot kill right there.

i will even add shaman in some extent with well managed grounding totem and earth shock what are you going to cast on me ?
In server I play , there are warlocks leveling all over the places.

I’m seeing mostly mages. I’m on a fresh(ish) server. I don’t see many druids or warlocks…
Well that would make sense, since mages are usually in their AoE zone
Without FAP, I really struggle vs. Frost mages due to their insane amounts of CC/slows.
There is no such thing as aoe zones, but aoe spots, which can’t hold more then 1 -2 mages anyway and they overlap with quests, idk statistic , maybe there are more mages all I can see is that there are tons of warlocks leveling compared to other classes.
So much wrong with your post idk where to even begin…firstly if you look at the logs uploaded from the top guilds you will see that both rogues and wars out dps mage by quite a bit. Secondly, when it comes to duels, rogue performs way better than mage. On pservers dedicated to pvp such as Hh, on duel tournaments featuring top tier players, rogues and locks won these events, not mages. In bgs rogues and mages play completly different roles, in wsg rogue is the best defending class staying in flagroom and opening on fc to make hom blow early cooldowns. Premades always bring 1 rogue. In wpw due to fap being cheap af and lips being expensive af and rogues being able to chose their fights, making them godlike for wpvp
