Mage is and has always been the easy ride class of raiding, so its not a shock that a lot of people want to play it.
Well you’re the mage, I’ll refer to your terminology;)
Mages are the second most popular class according to the statistics available. They’re probably just busy. They can sell portals, they’re required in group content, farm in instanced content etc
I’ve been checking Census on Gandling over the last 5 days or so, and the 2nd most popular class after warrior (17%) is mage by a long shot (16%), followed by rogue (12%), priest (12%), shaman (11%), hunter (10%), warlock (10%), and druid (7%).
So, either this is something limited to your realm or you’re seeing things.
Yes, warlock has a lot of goodies - demons, nice spells, nice damage, summoning, conjured items - but the player has to work hard for all of these things. Meanwhile, mages get everything for free. No soul shards, no demon quests, no “where is SS? noob lock”, no “pls healthstone - me too - me too - me too”, no “summ stone pls”. Also, mages are top tier in DPS. Warlocks only become top tier after ZG. So you end up with a class that is high effort-high reward, compared to a class that is low effort-high reward. Of course you’ll choose mage over warlock.
And not just over warlock: you think to yourself “which DPS class is better? - hunters? no; rogues? melee class, no CC, plenty of them, high gear competition with hunters, warriors, druids, shamans; warlocks? maybe, but cba with shards and demons; warriors? I’ll be forced to tank and I dunwanna. other classes are not viable”.
And you end up with mage.

Everyone loves a mage in dungeons for their water, slows and CC.
I have a question , have you played mage, or you are just imagining now how easy it is, because it is not easy at all, mage does not have pet , armor, hp or heals to tank encounters, it is hardest leveling class from all classes that I playing, not slowest , but hardest by far.

Don’t need to be angry at every mage about it. It was obvious they were going to be the “Flavor of Classic” class. Obviously will be a portion that are useless, low effort people but there is plenty that just love the class.

No it is just people who hear words like best leveling classes and now they have it stuck in their brains without understanding that it means, one of fastest classes that are possible to level , has potential to be leveled, not that it is easy class to levele.

Hardest from ones that I have leveled yes, Hunter is piss poor easy for example, but fun class to play.
From my experience I would say mages just have a slow start
It has very easy first levels , then it droops like a rock.
You know mages aren’t meant to melee right? 
Also, for ST dps, warriors and rogues are the best not mages.
What is your point?
That’s what stealth is for…
What would the clever mage do? Run as soon as they spot a rogue way out of range while in combat? Spam rank 1 blizzzard for an hour until they think the rogue is gone?
If you are a rogue you should worry more about warriors, they will even want some of the same gear as you.

Ah come on man, even outside of AoE from 40+ the kills per minute and travel time is very fast compared to most classes

Sure it gets better after level 40 , you get mount, you get barrier, I think all classes are alright by level 40 though.
