for no reason
There is a CLEAR reason.
You can disagree with that reason, sure, but that doesnât make it any less of an actual reason.
I wanted to call the Ravasaur Matriarch âYoshiâ on my hunter. Didnât allow it.

LotR names restricted because of (I assume) copyright reasons but we have the name âAnduinâ which is itself from LotR (OK, itâs not a character as such, itâs a river)
What about mithril? Itâs literally everywhere now, not a single setting without some kind of magic silvery metal named like that.
Wow had borrowed from ME for ages, actually. E.g. Sindorei\Sindar is way too obvious not to notice, Quelâdorei sounds pretty close to Eldar (and shares the meaning - Eldar were the high elves, the noblest and wisest ones), kaldorei are âchildren of the starsâ, while ME first Elves had been awakened under the starlight. Tol Barad can technically be âtranslatedâ from ME languages as âfortress islandâ. And thereâs more stuff like that.
Iâd assume that name âAnduinâ was supposed to be some kind of an easter-egg. Same true for Tirion (which is the city of Noldor), and a couple of other names too. Could be that some of those were unintentional, I donât know. Banning player character names wonât clean WoW lore\content from all those borrowings\eastereggs anyway.
What is the clear reason then?
The whole modern sword and sorcery genre is hugely influenced by Tolkienâs writings (with Howardâs Conan influencing the rest).
Tolkien invented so many names and unique languages for his tales that I would think it very difficult for anyone to claim copyright or ownership over all of them.
As you suggest, WoW is very much influenced by LotR and ME with truckloads of easter eggs and references in it.

What is the clear reason then?
That those names are either from other well-known franchises or from the Warcraft setting itself. Theyâre names that the devs (and many players) donât want to see run around. Theyâre immersion breaking and frankly; stupid (as player names).
Okay so letâs talk about other well known franchises. For instance LotR, right? You cannot name your character Legolas or Gandalf then why can we get the name Aragorn or Elrond? Or⊠some people say lore character names are restricted yet why can we get Anduin or even Varian but not Illidan or Arthas? This does seem very ridiculous.

Some names are just much more popular and fit certain classes/specs so well that they become walking memes. I think thatâs the difference.

Thereâs no strict definition of âstupidâ and âimmersion breakingâ. Names like Supaheal, Palading, or Imbatank always make me cringe, and the same true for many âlocal-flavoredâ names, which can only mean something to those who understand a language. Obviously, blizz canât ban and blacklist them all.
Yeah, I mean, they canât restrict everything thatâs stupid. Still, itâs pretty ridiculous that you canât have stuff like the aforementioned Anusha, but my realm Arathor is full of juvenile and oscene Hungarian names for example. Talk about immersion breaking

Agreed.

Obviously, blizz canât ban and blacklist them all.
Indeed.
All of the mentioned names are being taken by characters who got those names before they got restricted by blizz. Guess in that case its first gets first

( Gandalf, Grom, illidan, Malfurion, Tyrande, Legolas, Batman, Arthas, Alexstrasza, Frodo, Gollum, Maiev, Spiderman, Ysera, Hellboy, Elrond, Elune, Sylvanas, Scourge. )
These names are all restricted for no reason
They are copyrighted names or trademarked names, do we have to say everything?
No, thatâs not the case here mate. I would have understood that if we were not able to get other lore character names or important names from other fandoms.
When Bfa started. I tamed a bee on my hunter.
went to rename him MrBumbles.
âThat name is reserved. RESERVED!?â
On a pet?!
I laughed. And called him Lordbumble.
âthat name is reservedâ.
Thatâs when I knew this was some real conspiracy sshtuff
